Doctors Say Trump Is Displaying Clear Signs of Cognitive Issues

At 81 years old, president leaving the page." data-wf-tooltip-position="bottom" data-wf-reset-every="90">Joe Biden has attracted significant voter misgivings over his age and mental acuity.

But his rival in the upcoming presidential election, Donald Trump, may be dealing with much more acute cognitive issues.

Experts are becoming increasingly worried over Trump's condition, Salon reports, with the former president struggling to form coherent sentences and even once again confusing Biden with his predecessor Barack Obama during a rally in North Carolina this month.

"Not enough people are sounding the alarm, that based on his behavior, and in my opinion, Donald Trump is dangerously demented," psychologist and former Johns Hopkins Medical School professor John Gartner, who wrote a book about Trump's mental health, told Salon.

"This is a tale of two brains," he added. "Biden's brain is aging. Trump's brain is dementing."

"In my opinion, Donald Trump is getting worse as his cognitive state continues to degrade," Gartner said. "If Trump were your relative, you’d be thinking about assisted care right now."

    Others agreed.

"It is meaningful because the confusion of people, in contrast to the occasional forgetting of names, is a sign of early dementia, as noted by the Dementia Care Society," licensed psychologist and founder and executive director of the Washington Center For Cognitive Therapy Vincent Greenwood told the publication.

As for Trump mispronouncing words like "Venezuela" or "migrant crime," experts tend to agree he's exhibiting early signs of "paraphasia," speech disturbances caused by brain damage, and "not just aging," as Greenwood argued.

And others, like clinical psychologist and Cornell University senior lecturer Harry Segal, who specializes in mental health disorders, offer a more nuanced assessment — though not one that inspires much confidence in Trump.

"Since this is an intermittent problem, it suggests that when Trump is especially stressed and exhausted, he suffers cognitive slippage that affects the way he associates words or their meaning," he told Salon. "Note, though, that Trump’s pathological lying is itself a form of mental illness, so these cognitive lapses are literally sitting atop what appears to be an already compromised psychological functioning."

And at the end of the day, Trump is still contending with dozens of criminal charges.

Needless to say, none of this bodes well for the future of the country.

Voters are 'questioning Trump's sanity': conservative pollster

According to conservative pollster Sarah Longwell, voters are less concerned with Donald Trump's age than they are worried about his mental fitness as they look at the presidential choices in 2024.

Appearing on MSNBC's "The Weekend," Longwell — founder of Republican Voters Against Trump — was asked about voter worries about both Trump and President Joe Biden and she replied the public seem to hold them to two different standards.

"I wonder, in your focus groups, how the two issues or bearing out, the question of the candidates and the comparison points between the two them," co-host Alicia Menendez pressed.

"Look, whether it is fair or not, voters don't question Trump's mental capacity, they are questioning his sanity," she replied. "They question whether he is fit enough to be commander in chief from a moral and ethical standpoint."

"Trump has big lunatic energy," she continued as the hosts laughed. "He just doesn't come off the same way that Biden does. So the concerns for voters around age do rest with President Biden."

This is exactly what many mental health experts advocated for during all of Trump's presidency. Don't just cherry pick little pieces of what Trump says and try to make sense of them. Include the whole transcript so people can see for themselves all Trump does is babble incoherently like a happy little brook making no real sense at all. But now it is getting worse and worse by the day.

'Lots of gibberish': Transcript of Trump's Social Security interview shocks experts

The Biden campaign blasted Donald Trump on Monday after a short clip of the ex-president’s remarks calling for cutting Social Security and Medicare received hundreds of thousands of views.

But the full text of his comments, which include at best inaccurate or misleading claims about inflation and the stock market, are raising red flags.

Some political and policy experts are saying Trump “has no idea what he’s talking about,” while others are calling them “basically incomprehensible,” a “word salad,” and “gibberish.”

This is the first part of the quote from Donald Trump, posted by NBC News’ Vaughn Hillyard, that is getting social media responses like the ones above.

But it’s not even half of the “unofficial” CNBC transcript of Trump’s response to the question, “Have you changed your outlook on how to handle entitlements Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Mr. President?”

TRUMP: “So first of all, there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements, tremendous bad management of entitlements.

There’s tremendous amounts of things and numbers of things you can do. So I don’t necessarily agree with the statement. I know that they’re going to end up weakening social security because the country is weak. And let’s take a look at outside of the stock market, are, we’re going through hell. People are going through hell. If they have and I believe the number is 50%. They say 32 and 33%. I believe we have a cumulative inflation of over 50%, that means people are, you know, they have to make more than 50% more over a fairly short period of time to stay up. They’ve gotten routed. The middle class in our country has been routed and the middle class largely built our country and they have been treated very, very badly with policy.”

“Lots of gibberish,” is how Jim Manley, the leadership aide and communications director to then Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, characterized the above quote.

“Trump spent 4 years in office and he still has no idea what he’s talking about, and he still can’t hold a single thought for more than 10 seconds,” observed The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols, the international affairs expert and retired U.S. Naval War College professor.

MSNBC political analyst and Bloomberg Opinion Senior Executive Editor Tim O’Brien pointed to Trump’s claim we have “cumulative inflation of over 50%,” and wrote: “No, we don’t.”

University College London Associate Professor in Global Politics Brian Klass said: “This answer doesn’t make any sense. Word salad on a crucially important policy question. And yet this won’t get a big NYT headline or profile on how Trump is confused about how the government works and can’t string a coherent sentence together when asked about what he will do.”

Semafor Washington Bureau Chief Benjy Sarlin: “This is basically incomprehensible but that first line about cutting is going to end up in tons of ads if it’s at all coherent enough to clip.”

Award-winning journalist David S. Bernstein noted, “I cannot fathom a candidate for major federal office, at this stage of the campaign, not having a stock answer—even a transparently stupid one!—on Social Security and Medicare.”

Elizabeth Pancotti, Director, Special Initiatives at the Roosevelt Institute remarked, “we, uh, do not have a cumulative inflation of over 50%.”

Conservative U.S. economic policy analyst James Pethokoukis asked: “Does Trump have even a *very* rough idea of what how big, basic government programs work? How does he think Social Security is ‘managed?'”

“The worms are eating his brain,” said political columnist Dick Polman. “Trump on CNBC today, verbatim, discussing the inflation rate: ‘I believe that number is 50 percent. They say 32 and 33 percent. I believe we have cumulative inflationof over 50 percent.’ It’s 3.2 percent.”

Here is rest of Trump’s answer to that one question, unedited, via the CNBC transcript, which is part of the remarks above but was not posted to social media. It includes Trump’s claims about COVID, the economy, America’s energy independence, and more. Many of the remarks are disputable if not false. Nor do they include that Trump shut down the very agency that was designed to offer early warnings on pandemics months before COVID.

TRUMP: “When I was president, I was doing a job, we’re going to start to pay off debt. We were drill baby drill. We were producing oil but we were going at a much higher level oil and gas. We were doing, you know, we were third when I started and when they ended we were one by a longshot and we were very close, we’re energy independence, we’re very close to becoming energy dominant Joe, we’re gonna be dominant so dominant, like double what Saudi Arabia and Russia were doing. And we were on that path. We were gonna be paying down debt. We were doing, we were doing a lot of things and then we got hit with Covid. We did a fantastic job with Covid. But nobody, nobody wins with Covid. I guess China found that out because they also really got hit very hard also, but nobody wins with Covid. And so we had to get to we had to do other things. We had to help."

"You know, if I didn’t do the expenditures that we didn’t do the kinds of things we did for the economy, we would add in 1929 type depression. And I had to say out in front of it, and we did we did a great job on that and we did with all of the things we’re coming up with Regeneron doing so much else, getting all because you know we had empty when I came in, we had empty, I call them empty cupboards. We had empty shelves, we didn’t have equipment, we didn’t have the gowns, we didn’t have the ventilators. We didn’t have anything."

"This country wasn’t prepared for a thing like that. And I’m not even blaming anybody in that. Because, you know, when when it came, nobody thought the pandemic would ever happen again. It sounds like an ancient’s problem, not a problem that you’d have you know at that time, you know, in modern, very modern age. It was like an ancient thing. We you know, who, who would ever show I’m not blaming anybody, but we had empty cupboards, and I got them stocked and I got them stocked fast. And we did a great job with it. Never got credit. I got credit for the greatest economy. I got credit for foreign policy. I got credit for knocking out ISIS and not going into wars. But we beat ISIS, but I never got the credit for having done a great job with that.”

Mental health experts flag 'worrisome signs in the GOP candidate's cognitive presentation'

Psychiatrists and mental health experts are asking that a rule be made that any presidential candidate over the age of 75 have a "comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation" to ensure that he or she is fit to serve in office.

The working group, known as "Duty to Warn," collaborated in 2017 on a book that walked through the mental and cognitive health of then-President Donald Trump and the dangers he posed to the United States.

There is a rule against diagnosing public figures. In the case of Trump, the "Duty to Warn" group was so-named because it is part of the A.P.A.'s ethics rules if someone is a danger to themselves or others.

ALSO READ: House Republican giggles over Hitler praise — and admits he never listens to Trump

"We believe it is advisable that presidential candidates above the age of 75 submit to a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation before running for office," the working group said in a statement. "This policy ensures that individuals seeking this profoundly impactful position possess the cognitive and emotional capacities necessary to navigate the rigors of leadership, make sound decisions under pressure, and effectively manage the nation's affairs."

The statement explained that normal aging in adults follows cognitive changes, but they should not be confused with dementia.

"In fact, many aspects of cognitive function, such as vocabulary, accumulated knowledge, and wisdom, often remain stable or even improve with age," the statement continued. "Healthy older adults in their 70s and 80s can continue to learn new skills and adapt to new situations, regardless of their age. Our observations of the current president's speech and behavior suggest his presentation fits within the parameters of normal aging We do see several worrisome signs in the GOP candidate's cognitive presentation that are consistent with what appears to be an advancing disease process that is outside the bounds of normal aging."

The group has been observing Trump for some time, so it isn't shocking that they believe he is in the process of dementia.

"The manifestation of phonic paraphasias, semantic aphasias, confusion, 'word salads' and tangentiality raise the suspicion of an underlying neurological condition consistent with a dementia process," the mental health experts said. 'These symptoms, emerging in the context of substantial psychological stress from ongoing legal and financial scrutiny and obligations, along with a decrease in adoration and public influence (notably, on an international level), contribute to a complex diagnostic picture."

This comes as part of ongoing accusations that Trump has his own "malignant narcissism" and has grown "increasingly paranoid." It is part of an ongoing decline, the statement said.

"The gravity of entrusting national leadership to someone potentially facing advanced cognitive and personality challenges must be done with the utmost of care," they encouraged. "Individuals with dementia struggle with deficits in executive functioning (which includes problem solving and planning) and a deterioration in judgment, which would impact their ability to assess rapidly unfolding situations and understand consequences of their decisions and actions."

They said that the recommendation is that both candidates undergo comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation.

Trump claimed he took a cognitive exam in 2020, but internet sleuths explained what the test was and that it didn't match the tests given for a comprehensive analysis. Instead, the "The Montreal Cognitive Assessment" test is given to monitor changes over time.

Four years after taking the test, Trump still brags about his success. That test is not what the experts are asking Trump and President Joe Biden to take.

In Sept. 2023, Trump posted on social media, "I will name the place and the test, and it will be a tough one. Nobody will come even close to me! We can also throw some physical activity into it."

Trump once reported getting a clean bill of health from his personal doctor, which was so glowing that some questioned if Trump himself wrote it.

Those who dislike Trump think he is mentally ill, stupid, or both.

I dislike Trump, but I want to ask these people: How do you account for the cult like support he seem to have among about one third of the U.S. population?

    I can only guess.

I disliked Ronald Reagan, but I could understand his cow boy charisma.

    Any ideas?

If anyone responds to this comment I would like explanations that did not dismiss Trump supporters as bad people.

Well the man actually thinks the 2020 election was stolen from him. And asked his own DOJ to investigate wild conspiracy theories.

Does that sound like a rational individual!

I think the reality Trump is mentally ill is finally starting to sink in. And its more than just his incoherent babbling like a happy little brook. In every rally lately Trump says things that are death to his campaign. Like wanting to cut social security and Medicare. And there are several more examples. Then his campaign has to immediately try to cover that up and Trump has to contradict himself. And Trump has always gotten away with that. But Americans are paying more attention to what he says now and can see the pattern of Trump constantly contradicting himself. And the fact he can't even make sense.

Trump is out of his mind — and his speech in Ohio shows it

    Robert Reich
    March 17, 2024 8:42AM ET

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump stands on stage during a campaign event at Big League Dreams Las Vegas on January 27, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.(Photo by David Becker/Getty Images)

At a rally today outside the Dayton International Airport in Vandalia, Ohio, Trump warned that “if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a blood bath … for the country.”

He also warned that if he didn’t win, “I don’t think you’re going to have another election, or certainly not an election that’s meaningful.”

In the rest of the speech he repeated his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, which have been utterly discredited.

He praised the people serving sentences in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol — calling them “hostages” and “unbelievable patriots,” commending their spirit, and promising to help them if elected in November.

He cast migrants as threats to American citizens — claiming without evidence that other countries were emptying their prisons of “young people” and sending them across the border. “I don’t know if you call them ‘people,’ in some cases,” he said. “They’re not people, in my opinion.” He later referred to them as “animals.”

Trump is clearly desperate. He knows that his future freedom and his fortune both depend on winning in November. He has no qualms about turning Americans against Americans to achieve this goal. Apparently he is even willing to fuel violence, a second civil war.

Yesterday, Trump’s own former Vice President, Mike Pence, showed enough integrity to refuse to endorse Trump. If other current and former Republican officials had an ounce of integrity, they would do the same. Today’s disgraceful performance should be a wakeup call, if they still need one.

The rest of us must do everything in our power to ensure that this monster never again comes close to the Oval Office.

Conservatives fume that Trump's 'bloodbath' comment is taken out of context: ‘Deceptive’ headlines
Commentator Sean Parnell wrote, 'NBC pushing the bloodbath hoax now. Unreal. These ‘news’ agencies need a complete overhaul'.

Prominent conservatives on social media tore into several media outlets this weekend for appearing to take former President Trump’s comments at a recent Ohio rally out of context.

Conservative commentators, Republican lawmakers, and others slammed outlets like Rolling Stone, NBC News, and CBS News for sharing headlines about Trump claiming there would be a "bloodbath" if he didn’t win re-election that didn’t mention he was referring to the automotive industry.

These critics claimed this was a new, anti-Trump "hoax" being manufactured in real time.

Trump’s comments came during his recent rally in Ohio on Saturday, where he mentioned putting tariffs on Chinese-made cars that China would sell to Americans.

Addressing Communist Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Trump stated, "If you’re listening, President Xi — and you and I are friends — but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now… you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us, no. We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected."

Immediately after, the former president said, "Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars. They’re building massive factories."

Prominent media reported on the quote, sharing headlines simply stating that Trump warned of a "bloodbath" if he didn’t win.

Politico’s headline stated, "Trump says country faces ‘bloodbath’ if Biden wins in November." NBC News’ headline stated, "Trump says there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election." The headline for CBS News stated, "In Ohio campaign rally, Trump says there will be a "bloodbath" if he loses November election."

Additionally, Rolling Stone’s headline read, "Trump Says There Will Be a ‘Bloodbath’ and Elections Will End if He Isn’t Reelected," and NPR wrote, "Trump says some migrants are 'not people', and warns of 'bloodbath' if he loses" for its headline.

When asked about Trump’s comments by NBC News, his campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt clarified them: "Biden’s policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and autoworkers."

Conservatives ripped these headlines on X. Billionaire and X owner Elon Musk criticized NBC News' headline, calling it "deceptive." He posted, "This headline is deceptive, as he was referring to the auto industry. Shame on NBC."

Conservative commentator, U.S. military veteran, and author Sean Parnell blasted NBC as well, posting, "NBC pushing the bloodbath hoax now. Unreal. These ‘news’ agencies need a complete overhaul. They are no different than state run media propaganda."
Popular anti-leftist account "End Wokeness" shared a screenshot of several of these headlines together, and wrote, "We are witnessing the invention of the ‘bloodbath’ hoax in real-time. Unfortunately for them, we have X."

Elon Musk commented on End Wokeness’ post, stating, "Yup, hoax-making in process. And it is surprisingly effective."

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, posted, "Donald Trump said that a bloodbath would happen to the American auto industry if Biden kept on promoting Chinese made EVs. He of course is 100 percent correct. All other reporting about his ‘bloodbath’ comment is complete propaganda. The media should be ashamed."

I don't blame them for panicking. Trump constantly calling for political violence is taking a toll on Trump and all treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans. But everyone else is pointing to the real context. Trump opened his rally once again praising the violent extremists that attacked the Capitol and calling the "hostages" and patriots. That is promoting and advocating for political violence if he loses the election/

But now let's look at something else I am glad you posted.

"Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars. They’re building massive factories."

What does that even mean? Notice how he can't even complet4 the first thought. Then repeating himself with blood bath and the least of it. Then the non sequitur to selling cars. And another non sequitur to massive factories. That inability to convey complete thoughts, the repetition, and the non sequitur are exactly what the mental health experts are pointing to as proof of Trump's literal and clinical mental illness.

Just observing as an outsider. Every significant claim made against Trump (regarding his presidency) has to this this day proved to not bare any fruit. He has not been convicted by 1 single crime that his political opponents have brought against him. Remember stormy Daniel's? Russia collusion? And the recent Jan 6th decision that was UNANIMOUSLY denied by the Supreme Court. This is not bringing up the many other allegations against him. I'm beginning to think either he's a genius at dodging all this or the prosecutors are that inept at getting some type of "slam dunk" conviction.
