i see similarities between relationship love and a religion. both are institutions that we are raised to accept and not question.

there is a reason why 98% of animals aren't monogamous. why do we human's insist on pretending?

Humans are a different breed, though. Our young take nearly two decades to rear up. Our brains don't fully develop until we're in our early 20's. No where else in the animal kingdom is this so. Our highly developed frontal cortex (and the like) come with a cost. Human pair-bonding, for life or at least until the child is self-sufficient, was beneficial to the survival of our species because of the tremendous resources it takes to get a child to a suitable age where it could survive on it's own.

In our modern times, raising a child on one's own is not a life and death struggle in most cases, but hop in to the Way Back Machine to 50,000 years ago and a woman and her child would most surely die if they were left on their own for food, shelter and all those other basic necessities. So, these days, it's not so important that a couple stay together. However, the mechanism for love is still bred in to our DNA so we still have to deal with it's ups and downs.
