A disgraceful nightmare is finally over

I will never forget the beaming faces of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, his wife, his two young daughters, and his parents when they first walked into the Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing room to start the first day of Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing for a seat on the United States Supreme Court.

They looked so happy, so proud, so dignified, so humble. I will also never forget the horribly pained faces of the Kavanaugh family on the last day of the confirmation hearings. The transformation was heart-wrenching.

Those of us who watched the hearings witnessed within seconds of the beginnings turn into a coordinated, calculated, salacious, and perverted attempt by one political party to smear, vilify, and destroy a man’s good character and reputation for purely partisan political reasons. It was disgusting, it was ugly, it was hideous, it was a nightmare.

Make no mistake about it; it was American political history at its worst. In our history, we have edured the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy era, and the attempted “high-tech lynching” of Justice Clarence Thomas. And now, the sad and disgraceful Kavanaugh debacle. When will enough be enough? I fear the answer is never. The nature of some people in our political system is more than simply flawed; their nature is mean, contemptible, and yes, in the extreme, evil.

After this horrible chapter in our history, I hope the now confirmed Justice Kavanaugh and his family will be able to repair the harm that was inflicted on their spirit, indeed, on their very souls as Americans. Although I know the healing will never be fully attained, I wish them the best of luck.

I end by quoting Sam Houston at his 1832 trial before the House of Representatives: “Sir, when you shall have destoyed the pride of American character, you will have destroyed the brightest jewel that heaven ever made.”

Usually I am afraid of stumbler. I do not fear his debate skills, because he has none. I fear his prowess with invective.

However, when I am called on to defend a woman as beautiful as mayling, I control my fear, and stand - albeit with shaking knees - between her and her attackers.
