Economy shows more signs of turning around

In case you haven’t noticed, the economy is actually getting better. Noticeably better.

Yes, it’s been painfully slow in coming, as we continue to tack against strong headwinds coming from Europe and the Middle East as well as the strong ebb tide created by the wind-down of fiscal stimulus. And certainly the recovery has been halting and uneven.

Economic data suggest the recovery has picked up speed. So why do politicians on both sides seem to cling to worst-case scenarios?

The data points for this optimism are to be found in recent reports on private payrolls (averaging just under 200,000 jobs per month for the past year), gross domestic product (growing at an annual rate of 3 percent), consumer confidence (as high as its been since 2008) and income (up 5 percent in the past year before adjusting for inflation).

On Wall Street, the Dow is at its highest point in nearly four years and Nasdaq at its highest point in a decade, reflecting both record profits and renewed investor confidence. Federal and state tax revenues are beginning to come in better than projected and households are continuing to whittle down their debt, with a savings rate of 4.5 percent. There are even enough green shoots in the housing market to suggest that residential construction might contribute to GDP growth this year rather than subtract from it. Revisions of government data are now reliably up rather than down.

Hey Ace if "enthusiasm" is so great for the conservative/Republican/Tea Party how come President Obama leads all GOP candidates?

According to a new poll by the Associated Press, President Obama holds a lead against all four of the Republican presidential candidates. The AP reports that President Obama is leading Mitt Romney nationally by eight points, 51 to 43. President Obama's lead is even bigger against Rick Santorum, holding a commanding 52-43 point lead over the former Pennsylvania senator. President Obama also has a nine-point edge against Ron Paul, 53-44. President Obama holds his most commanding lead over the former Republican speaker of the house, Newt Gingrich. President Obama has a ten point advantage over Gingrich, 52-42. As Republicans continue to battle it out between each other, taking shots at everything the president does in the process, President Obama is taking care of the country. With an unemployment rate that is continuing to drop and 3.7 million jobs being created over 23 straight months of private sector job growth, President Obama can begin to run on his record.

As another round of voting takes place this week in the Republican presidential race – with 11 states holding Super Tuesday contests – a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows that the combative and heavily scrutinized primary season so far has damaged the party and its candidates.

Four in 10 of all adults say the GOP nominating process has given them a less favorable impression of the Republican Party, versus just slightly more than one in 10 with a more favorable opinion.

Additionally, when asked to describe the GOP nominating battle in a word or phrase, nearly 70 percent of respondents – including six in 10 independents and even more than half of Republicans – answered with a negative comment.

House GOP Caught In A New Budget Predicament

For most observers, the biggest question about the House Republicans’ forthcoming budget is how they’ll handle the issue of Medicare. Will they readopt the same phase-out and privatize policy that got them into political trouble last year? Or will they, at least to some extent, scale back their vision?

But the bigger question has nothing to do with Medicare. The bigger question is whether House Republicans can pass a budget at all.

The dilemma, first noted by Daniel Newhauser of Roll Call, is a straightforward outgrowth of the self-governance problem the GOP’s dealt with since it reclaimed the majority last year. A sizable faction of the party wants to make a big statement with the budget, and, perhaps, use it as a tool to cut further into domestic federal programs. But others in the party — including some in the leadership — want to avoid an election year clash that threatens a government shutdown. They want to hew to the spending levels they agreed upon with Democrats last year when they resolved the debt limit standoff.

Obviously Democrats aren’t going to help the GOP advance its vision for the country’s future. So if these two Republican factions can’t come together, they won’t be able to pass a budget.

“That’s problematic. We might not pass a budget, who knows?” said Budget and Appropriations Committee Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID), as quoted by Roll Call.

That would be a huge embarrassment for GOP leaders, who frequently attack Senate Democrats, who haven’t passed their own budget resolution since 2009. (More on that here.)

There’s no easy option for the House GOP, and while some aides downplay the predicament, others privately admit it’s real. A number of them declined to comment.

That, of course, is complete nonsense. There is no "radical left" in the United States, and there's certainly nothing radical about Barack Obama. As the Republican Party has veered to the right, the Democratic Party has embraced the vacated center. More's the pity, because some of us wanted to see some meaningful reform.

One has to wonder, assuming Obama wins in November, whether the Republicans in Congress will continue to obstruct everything he tries to do. Eight years is a long time to try to do that. There are signs even now that they might have figured out that it's not a winning strategy.

And just the idea that the Koch retreat would not be infiltrated but the recordings handed over to Mother Jones was a kick to the Koch Brothers groin.

And keep in mind that was 15 months ago and they've been losing ground ever since despite a couple hundred million dollars already spent to the contrary.
