DCCC Launches Website Chronicling Republican Scandals

WASHINGTON -- After a series of Republican ethics allegations, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched HouseOfScandal.com on Monday. The website will feature the Republican members of Congress who have faced scandals and ethics questions since the GOP won the House in 2010.

In a statement released Sunday, the DCCC contrasted the allegedly ethically-challenged politicians with House Speaker John Boehner's "zero tolerance" policy for lawmakers who have breached ethical standards.
"Voters are finding out that Republicans leaders have zero intention of carrying through on their zero-tolerance pledge for Republicans' ethics scandals and corruption," said DCCC spokesman Jesse Ferguson. He added, "Each month it seems another scandal-plagued Republican is revealed.

Republicans' top priorities are their special interest allies, ultra-wealthy campaign contributors, their campaign treasuries and their personal bank accounts -- not the best interest of middle-class families and seniors."

The site's launch comes on the heels of allegations that several House Republicans have violated campaign finance laws. Federal officials are currently looking into allegations that Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), who serves as vice chairman of finance for the National Republican Congressional Committee, reimbursed employees for contributing $90,000 in illegal straw donations to his campaign as well as accusations that he failed to disclose relevant business positions at more than a dozen companies. Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) is being investigated for allegedly extorting a rabbi and his followers into donating as much as $500,000 to his congressional campaign.

Other Republicans listed on HouseOfScandal.com include: Pete Sessions (R-Texas), Frank Guinta (R-N.H.), Gary Miller (R-Calif.), Tim Griffin (R-Ariz.) and Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.). The DCCC will name a new Republican member to the list each month.

Obama's approval rate plunges due to gas prices

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama's job approval rating, weighed down by soaring gas prices, has plunged below 50 percent, giving his political opponents what appears to be an opening in the November election, a new opinion poll showed.
The survey by ABC News and The Washington Post indicated that only 46 percent of Americans now approved of the way Obama is handling his job and 50 percent disapproved.
The situation was a reversal from late February when 50 percent approved of the president's performance and 46 percent disapproved.
According to the survey, the drop was attributed to soaring gas prices threatening to crimp America's slow recovery from a recession.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts gasoline prices across the United States could average $4.25 a gallon by May, up from over $3.60 today.
Between 1998 and 2004, prices ranged from $1 to $2.
Prices vary wildly between regions, however, and last week, gasbuddy.com, a website that tracks prices in all 50 states, reported $5.09 a gallon at one Mobil and two Chevron stations in greater Los Angeles.
Given that 76 percent of Americans drive themselves to work, and a trip to the store can often mean a long drive to the mall, higher gas prices are a critical issue especially in a presidential election year.
The polls also found that 59 percent of Americans had given Obama negative ratings on the economy, and 65 percent disapproved of his handling of the gas price situation.
The president's sliding approval rating appeared to give new hope to Republican presidential contenders. The survey showed that if the election were held today Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney would beat Obama 49 percent to 47 percent.

Reid Dares GOP: Block Judicial Nominees, And You Will Also Stall The JOBS Act

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a message for the Republicans: Filibuster over a dozen judicial nominees, as you’ve threatened to, and the country can watch for weeks as you hold up the bipartisan JOBS Act. I dare you.

Ever since President Obama used his recess appointment power to install the director of a powerful consumer protection agency, and members of the National Labor Relations Board, Senate Republicans have threatened to hold up all of his other pending nominees. Including judges.

Normally, there’s little a majority leader can do to thwart a determined minority bent on grinding the Senate to a halt. But Reid believes he’s found the leverage he needs.

Reid pulled procedural levers Monday to force action on 17 stalled, non-controversial judicial nominees to federal trial courts — just as the Senate was expected to take up the House-passed JOBS Act, a modest GOP-led bill to encourage economic growth by loosening regulations on small business capital formation.

That presents Republicans with a conundrum: proceed with the promised filibusters and eat up weeks of floor time while the JOBS Act sits in limbo; or accede to Reid’s demands and hand Democrats a win — and a bunch of federal judges.

Allow me to update this Senate battle.

McConnell: I’m Filibustering Seventeen Judges Because Reid Made Republicans ‘Look Bad’

In an exchange that seems designed to prove why fewer Americans approve of Congress than approve of communism or the BP oil spill, Senate Leaders Harry Reid (D-NV) and Mitch McConnell (R-KY) engaged in a long debate this morning over why Reid is currently trying to break seventeen filibusters of President Obama’s judicial nominees. The exchange culminated with McConnell admitting that, even though all these judges will be confirmed eventually, he is blocking them now because he is upset that Reid’s making him look bad:
REID: I’ve got a great idea. My friend the Republican Leader said these judges are all going to get approved anyway, so I’ve got an idea. Let’s go to this IPO bill immediately after finishing the highway bill, with the agreement that we’ll dispose of these judges immediately after that. . . .

McCONNELL: It is highly unlikely any of these district judges are not going to be confirmed. We’ve done a number of them this year. We’ve done seven this year. District judges are almost never defeated. This is just a very transparent attempt to try to slam dunk the minority and make them look like they are obstructing things they aren’t obstructing. We object to that. We don’t think that meets the standard of civility that should be expected in the Senate. And, so, any effort to make the minority look bad or attempt to slam dunk them that is sort of manufactured as this is is gonna, of course, be greeted with resistance.

Watch it:

Let’s explain what’s going on here. Both Reid and McConnell agree that there is nothing objectionable about these judges — in McConnell’s words, “it is highly unlikely any of these district judges are not going to be confirmed.” Additionally, both men agree that the Senate should vote on the “IPO bill” that Reid refers to, a bill dealing with investments in small businesses that recently passed the House.

Initially, Reid wanted to vote on the seventeen judges awaiting confirmation before moving on to the IPO bill, but he even concedes this point — saying that he is willing to “go to this IPO bill” first as McConnell prefers.

And then McConnell says this deal is unacceptable because Reid “ma[de] the minority look bad.”

If this is truly McConnell’s reason for blocking these judges, then he just made an absolutely shocking admission. Thanks to excessive judicial vacancies, America’s courts are increasingly unable to function. In some courts, judges are so overburdened they have to rush major felony cases through as if they involved minor traffic violations. In one court, felony caseloads nearly doubled in just two years. Every court that is unable to handle its caseload means wrongly fired workers waiting months or years for justice and businesses that must delay making new hires until they are sure they won’t be hit with an unwarranted legal judgment. And yet McConnell says he is willing to punish all of these workers and businesses because he is upset that Reid has made him look bad. America can ill afford this kind of tantrum.
