Poor Rachel Maddow. This is another one of those nights when they had a show all planned out. Breaking news stories of the day took prority. So they changed it. And then five minutes before they went on the air the stories of Jared Kushner getting loans after he held White House meetings with the lenders broke and all bets were off and they have to think on their feet and cover that.

And damn if you are going to play pay to play get you some of that $184 million. That's how you play pay to play from inside the White House. And security clearance? We don't need no stinking security clearances just to play pay to play.

MSNBC’s Hardball Leads Time Slot in Total Viewers Wednesday, Maddow Beats Hannity

MSNBC continues to be a real thorn in the side of Fox News, as Rachel Maddow is not the only on-air personality who can claim a ratings win over a competitor.

*Hardball with Chris Matthews had a good night on Wednesday, beating both Fox News and CNN in total viewers, though falling just short in the key demo of adults between the ages of 25 and 54, pulling down a total viewership of 1,963,000. Fox News’ The Story with Martha MacCallum took the key demo with 402,000 viewers between the ages of 25 and 54. The Story fell just short in total viewership with 1.921 million.

Elsewhere on MSNBC, The Rachel Maddow Show, which airs at 9 p.m., had another major night as it once again was the most-watched program on cable news, clocking in a total viewership of 3,283,000 and easily snagging a win in the key demo. Overall, the network claimed a primetime victory in that key demo, with an average of 596,000 viewers, but was just edged out in total viewers (2.634 million) by Fox News.

Speaking of Fox News, their big winner was Tucker Carlson Tonight, which airs at 8 p.m., achieving 2,967,000, followed closely by Hannity, which airs at 9 p.m., with 2,862,000. As for the 25-54 demo, Tucker Carlson’s program took the lead, with 601,000. Fox News’ average primetime viewership for Wednesday was 2,717,000, the highest of all three major networks.

CNN continued to flounder, with both hours of Anderson Cooper 360 pulling in solid, if not spectacular, numbers, with the 8 p.m. hour boasting a total viewership of 1,277,000. As far as an average total viewership for the night, CNN earned less than half the numbers of rival networks, with an average of 1,181,000 viewers.

As for the entire day’s (6 a.m. to 2 a.m.) programming, Fox News easily took the crown, with an average viewership of 1,724,000. MSNBC came in second with an average viewership of 1,399,000. CNN, as usual, limped into third, with an average viewership of 818,000.

Watch: Frantic Florida lawmaker has a complete meltdown in bonkers AM Joy interview about arming teachers

In a interview that occasionally spiraled into chaos, MSNBC host Joy Reid peppered a Florida congressman about his knowledge of gun laws and the history of restrictions on weapons, that turned into a shouting match with the congressman.

Appearing on AM Joy, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) pressed for “multipliers of force” on school campuses who engage in crossfire with potential shooters as way to make schools safer.

In one telling moment, Gaetz said he had strong support in his district for the NRA, telling host Reid that Florida is a pro-NRA state with a membership of over a million, only to have the host correct him and inform him that NRA only boasts 300,000 members in his state.

“How many people live in Florida ?” Reid asked.

“20 million,” the Florida lawmaker replied.

“So 300,000 people in Florida are ruling over and making laws for 20 million people,” Reid shot back.

“It’s not just the membership of the NRA,” Gaetz deflected. “There’s countless people beyond dues-paying members of the NRA who support the NRA.”

The conversation moved onto arming teachers, with Gaetz maintaining a well-armed collection of former soldiers like those who served in Fallujah could be stationed at schools which, in turn, stunned Reid.

“You want to turn our schools into Fallujah?” she asked, which set off an another round of talking over each other.

“Have you ever taken live fire?” Reid pressed.

“No, I’ve not taken live fire,” Gaetz replied after first saying he had.

“You’ve never been in a situation where somebody is shooting at you,” Reid lectured, “but you’re interpreting in your expertise, as somebody who has never been in law enforcement and never had anyone shoot at you, that a teacher should be equipped to fire back at a mass shooter who is prepared to die, who has acquired a weapon that is just below an M-16, you’ve never experienced that live fire.”

MSNBC Surges Forward in the Trump Era, Despite Its Executive Leadership

MSNBC is thriving in the Trump era…still. That is to say, where other networks and news outlets are experiencing ratings declines and traffic dips as news fatigue sets in (the latest Trump scandal just doesn’t resonate like it used to), MSNBC has posted impressive growth since this time last year.

What makes that even more impressive is that this time last year was when cable news was blasting through ratings records thanks to blanket coverage of President Donald Trump‘s inauguration and the dawn of his administration.

An analysis of MSNBC’s numbers reveals why: the network’s progressive primetime shows, hosted by Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence O’Donnell, are surging — posting stunning year-over-year growth not just in the raw numbers but also in their share of the overall cable news audiences.

And that’s because they’re doing what they do best: serving up smart, analytical and entertaining anti-Trump comfort food for their traditionally left-leaning viewers.

But MSNBC striking ratings gold this year appears to come not because of, but despite, the actions of its senior leadership. Instead, NBC News executives have seemingly done everything they can — from stocking up with conservative commentators to scheduling ex-NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams just after primetime — to move the network to the center.

In January, MSNBC posted staggering growth of 65 percent from last year in primetime viewership (made even more impressive considering Fox News fell 15 percent and CNN 14 percent). And Maddow, its primetime titan, notched her best ratings week ever. She averaged more than 3 million viewers in early January, beating out rival Sean Hannity’s Fox News show by almost 400,000 viewers, and ended the month topping cable news in the coveted adults 25-54 demographic. Though the regular ratings victor Hannity was back on top for February, Maddow continued to grow her audience relative to 2017.

And it’s not just Rachel Maddow who is fueling MSNBC’s growth. Though the rise of her show in the cable news rankings is remarkable, Hayes and O’Donnell have seen similar success since February of last year. As Maddow went from 7th to 3rd in overall viewers, O’Donnell jumped from 13th to 8th and Hayes from 17th to 9th. MSNBC, as a whole, was up 23 percent in overall viewership and 15 percent in the demo.

That’s concrete evidence of the growth of a network running against a tide of declining cable news ratings for its competitors. But before you dole out a standing ovation to the head-honchos at MSNBC, it’s worth noting that this success flies in the face of their publicly stated strategy to pull back from the network’s “Lean Forward” days in favor of a more centrist approach.

This internal battle between the network’s surging ratings, and NBC News chairman Andy Lack’s desire to divorce MSNBC from the liberal firebrand identity of its Keith Olbermann days was well documented by Ryan Grim in a HuffPost report from May of last year, the month the network was crowned — for the first time in 17 years — no. 1 in prime-time cable news.

It was an “unusual problem,” Grim wrote: the network’s “sky-high ratings” were being driven by its liberal primetime programming, the triumvirate of the #Resistance — Maddow, Hayes and O’Donnell, which conflicted with Lack’s vision of a centrist network personified by Brian Williams.

“The entire primetime lineup is doing record numbers and Lack can’t stand it,” one senior MSNBC source told Grim, reportedly echoing the sentiments of other network insiders. “It makes him furious.”

Lack has engaged, since arriving at the network in 2015, in something of a purge of MSNBC’s most progressive hosts — who were replaced with straight news programs and in some cases conservatives: Alex Wagner, Joy Reid (who now has returned on the weekend), and Ronan Farrow saw their shows cancelled, and new hires included former Fox Newser Greta Van Susteren, former Bush aide Nicolle Wallace and conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. Al Sharpton’s 6 p.m. show was canceled, and replaced with one from Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.

And how has that strategy fared? The Halperin-Heilemann show was canceled (unrelated to the later implosion of Halperin’s career due to sexual harassment accusations; the show just rated poorly), and replaced by Van Susteren. She lasted six months before her show was also canceled due to lackluster ratings.

Van Susteren was replaced by MSNBC chief legal correspondent Ari Melber, an unabashed progressive whose wonky program The Beat dedicates the lion’s share of its coverage to the Russia investigation and the rich tapestry of Trump’s legal woes. It’s faring far better, pulling in 1.45 million overall viewers in February 2018, compared to Van Susteren’s 900,000 that month last year. That makes it MSNBC’s best rated show ever in the 6 p.m. time-slot, and a hit in the A25-54 demographic, with 56% growth in 2017. What’s more, Joy Reid’s weekend show continues to post impressive numbers, regularly averaging more than 1 million viewers.

Lack’s efforts to Lean Centrist even targeted the network’s booming primetime shows, as Lawrence O’Donnell’s battle to secure a new contract last year spilled out into very-public view. Despite his historically high ratings, O’Donnell’s seven-year-old program appeared to be on the chopping block when his contract had yet to be renewed just weeks before its expiration — it was even rumored that Lack wanted to replace the host with Brian Williams. But through the messy public back and forth, O’Donnell survived, and Williams stuck with the 11 p.m. time-slot.

Ultimately, despite Lack’s reported reluctance to embrace the Resistance, it doesn’t appear he has much of a choice. Unlike CNN, where ultimately boss Jeff Zucker clearly calls the shots, Lack’s vision has been stubbornly stifled by his own talents’ impressive success.

You may have noticed no mention here of MSNBC President Phil Griffin, the executive credited with launching Maddow’s career and shaping the network’s current primetime lineup. Well, that is because, since Lack’s arrival, Griffin has reportedly been given little autonomy to make major decisions and rumors have continued to persist that his days could be numbered.

O’Donnell’s show has gotten in the habit of regularly raking in more than 2 million viewers, taking an increasingly impressive share of cable audiences. Meanwhile, Williams, a key ingredient in Lack’s experiment to make bring MSBC to the center, has just seen his show overtaken in the ratings by Shannon Bream’s new live 11 p.m. Fox News show. At what point does MSNBC say we know what we are and we know what works? That doesn’t mean changing the impressive news coverage that NBC News and MSNBC continue to deliver on the network, but it does mean ending the pipe dream that somehow the network will be seen by conservatives and liberals alike as “fair and balanced.” It’s not and shouldn’t be.

Ari pulled off a major coup today getting Sam Nunberg to sing like a canary about his upcoming testimony in the Mueller investigation and let me say he let loose some gems. He even invited a lawyer and a prosecutor to join them and Nunberg just keep on tightening the loose all afternoon as he wasn't going down without his 15 minutes of fame.

I'm not normally a fan of The Beat but that was pure gold. Ari is relatively professional and likeable though. Rachel is still my go to.

Yeah well now I ain't so sure. For one thing Numberg was bouncing all over the airways today bouncing from network to network. And then afterwards there was this.

Friends fear ex-Trump aide was ‘day drunk’ during televised meltdown — and may have put himself in legal jeopardy

People close to former Trump campaign aide Sam Nunberg worry he may have been “drinking again” during his multiple public appearances Monday defending his decision to not testify before a grand jury called by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The Daily Beast spoke to several friends of the former campaign aide fired early on during Trump’s presidential run, many of whom said they thought Nunberg might be day drunk.

“Several of [Nunberg’s] friends told The Daily Beast they were concerned that he was putting himself in severe legally jeopardy by going on multiple live cable-news programs Monday afternoon,” the report notes. “They also said that they were worried Nunberg had been drinking prior to dialing in to MSNBC and CNN.”

Those many interviews included the former aide’s professed belief that Mueller “has something” on the president and a jab at White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who he called a “fat slob.”

In one instance, Nunberg hung up on an associate who was trying to convince him “not to do anything stupid and to go to his parents’ house immediately.” Minutes later, the report read, the man once sued by Donald Trump for “leaking” information to the press was on MSNBC with host Katy Tur, the first of multiple phone interviews throughout the afternoon.

During his in-person interview with MSNBC’s Ari Melber later in the evening, Nunberg joked that he “wouldn’t go to jail” before his co-panelist Maya Wiley, a New School executive and civil rights activist, tried to convince him otherwise.

I was torn between laughing my ass off and feeling bad for the guy. It was painfully obvious to me at least that he is scared shitless of what is going to happen to him first if he follows through and ignores the subpeona and secondly what Mueller is going to do to him.

That ship sailed as he sang like a drunk canary and he only wishes there was poison there to choke the life out of him. He put to rest any hope of this going smoothly as of this afternoon, and when Mueller finds time to watch and listen to all of the coverage from today (which he was too busy to follow), he is going to go great white shark on that poor bastard.

I also think that at this point Stone is less than pleased with his "buddy" who was trying to defend him from the sharks by throwing him into a lions cage for safe keeping ...

I have been subpeona'd in the past and I don't recall it ever saying "we request the pleasure of your company" on it!

Before Rachel Maddow's show was over Nunberg was already back tracking saying he will probably comply with the subpoena but he "doesn't want to make it easy for Mueller."

And I don't know if there is anything to it or not but what Nunberg seems to be most freaked out about is he believes Mueller is putting a case together against Roger Stone.
