MSNBC analyst Natasha Bertrand explains how National Enquirer scandal ‘substantiates’ two key parts of Steele Dossier

Ever since the release of the bombshell Steele dossier, reporters have been working to sort out how much of it is true.

The document alleges that Donald Trump was blackmailed into becoming close with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and ultimately accepted election help from a hostile foreign power.

We now know that Trump was very much susceptible to blackmail—whether by the Russians or someone else.

“Blackmail is at the center of the Steele dossier,” said host Chris Hayes.

Hayes then pointed to the New York Times reports on Trump’s relations with National Enquirer publisher David E. Pecker: “The idea of that is not at all far-fetched—in fact, it already exists.”

Natasha Bertrand of The Atlantic agreed Trump was very much susceptible to blackmail.

“This is potentially the most blackmail-able president in United States’ history,” she said. “The fact that the National Enquirer had decades of information about his affairs, his children, about even Melania, speaks volumes about the president’s life and all of the shady things he did throughout his career—many of which, most of which, perhaps all of which—he never faced real consequences for.”

Bertrand said that what what we know about the relations between Pecker and Trump substantiate two key parts of the dossier.

“This substantiates two big claims in the dossier,” she said. “The first , of course, is that Michael Cohen was President Trump’s fixer in all things related to Russia. Just as he was the fixer in relation to burying stories about Trump’s extramarital affairs, he was also, according to the dossier, his fixer in burying the story of the Trump campaign’s conspiracy with Russia to win the election. He was alleged to have paid off the hackers and to have kinda cleaned the whole thing up after the election.”

The second part? Trump’s reluctance to discuss his alleged sexual activities following his marriage to Melania.

“Trump is a little bit more skittish about his extramarital affairs becoming public than a lot of us have been led to believe,” she said. “There’s always this theory that perhaps the president wouldn’t care if news came out that prostitutes peed on a bed in Moscow because he hated President Obama and wanted to defile the bed he slept on… Now we know that Trump has gone to great lengths to hide these details of his personal life, and it really makes you wonder that if those salacious details in that dossier are true, what lengths have the president gone to to keep the Russians from exposing them?”

NBC News let a Pulitzer Prize and the biggest story of 2017 slip away because honchos at the Peacock network didn't want it to see the light of day, a former NBC News producer told the Daily Beast.

In the web site's bombshell report Thursday, NBC News producer Rich McHugh, who was working with Ronan Farrow on the reporter's investigation of alleged sexual misconduct by Weinstein, claimed that an order to stop pursuing the scathing story came from "the very highest levels at NBC."

McHugh, who left the network's investigative unit earlier this month, told Fox News the order came as he and Farrow were preparing to travel to Los Angeles to interview a woman "with a credible allegation of rape" against the now-disgraced movie producer.

"I was told not to do the interview and ordered to stand down, thus effectively killing the story," McHugh said. "That was unethical, and a massive breach of journalistic integrity.

"Is there anyone in the journalistic community who actually believes NBC didn’t breach its journalistic duty to continue reporting this story?" McHugh added. "Something else must have been going on."

The network told Fox News in a statement Thursday, "The assertion that NBC News tried to kill the Weinstein story while Ronan Farrow was at NBC News, or even more ludicrously after he left NBC News, is an outright lie."

But according to The Daily Beast, it was NBC News president Noah Oppenheim who made the decision to nix Farrow's piece. The exec reportedly didn’t want to upset a Hollywood powerhouse such as Weinstein when he had ambitions of returning to the movie industry.

Farrow and McHugh reportedly pitched the story investigating Hollywood's notorious "casting couch" practices in January 2017. The story originally was meant to air around that year's Oscars, which wouldn't have been good for the Hollywood-friendly Oppenheim, the screenwriter of several films including "Jackie," "The Maze Runner," and the first installment of the "Divergent" series.

Insiders told Fox News at the time that NBC executives may have been wary of ruining relationships in Hollywood, and brittle from years of bad publicity and tabloid covers about its own stars’ behavior and personal lives.

NBC denies these issues had anything to do with their decision to kill the Weinstein story. But the network has been scrambling to give a credible explanation for why they sat on an explosive audiotape of a powerful man behaving badly.

It's not just Oppenheim who has connections to the disgraced accused rapist. Back in 2013, Weinstein attended an Obama event at the Martha’s Vineyard home of Comcast CEO Brian Roberts. The Weinstein Company has had TV programs on NBC Universal stations, and Weinstein reportedly begged NBC Universal executive Ron Meyer for support when the harassment allegations began to surface.

Additionally, Oppenheim’s boss, powerful NBC News Chairman Andy Lack, has allowed his subordinate to take heat for quashing the Weinstein story. Oppenheim’s role at NBC is far smaller than that of his counterparts at other networks since so much of NBC’s news operation reports directly to Lack. “He doesn’t do much other than spiking stories,” said an NBC News insider of Oppenheim.

Farrow ultimately won a Pulitzer Prize for his reports on sexual misconduct by Weinstein and other powerful men, which ultimately saw the light of day as a series of articles in The New Yorker. He left NBC months ago.

NBC threatened to ruin Ronan Farrow if he didn’t stop reporting on Harvey Weinstein: report

In 2017, NBC’s general counsel allegedly threatened to ruin Ronan Farrow if he didn’t stop reporting on Harvey Weinstein — even though he’d already left the network.

The Daily Beast reported Thursday that new details from people familiar with the conversation revealed that NBC counsel Susan Weiner made “several” calls to Farrow in attempts to get him to quash his reporting.

An NBC spokesperson who spoke to the Beast on condition of anonymity said the allegations are “absolutely false.”

“There’s no truth to that all,” the spokesperson said. “There is no chance, in no version of the world, that Susan Weiner would tell Ronan Farrow what he could or could not report on.”

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow stunned by Trump official’s exposure of administration ‘resistance’: ‘It feels like the end of something’

Shortly after host Nicolle Wallace wondered whether a senior Trump official who penned an anonymous op-ed was committing a “coup,” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow joined the show by phone to react to the bombshell editorial.

“This is an unusual day in American history,” Maddow said, noting that although it seems nothing can surprise political spectators in the Trump era, the New York Times editorial penned by the senior official and member of the intra-Trump administration “resistance” did just that.

“I just feel like somebody is trying to pull the fire alarm and I’m not sure that we know as a country how we are supposed to respond when an alarm like this is sounded,” she mused.

For the editorial to come out just a day after Bob Woodward revealed the depth of the Trump White House’s turmoil in excerpts from his new book, Maddow said, is telling.

“It feels like the end of something,” she said. “I don’t know what happens next.”

‘A coup’: MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace explains the significance of NYT’s anonymous Trump official’s ‘resistance’ editorial

While responding to the bombshell editorial penned by an anonymous senior official in the Trump administration denouncing the president, MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace noted that it could be considered a “coup.”

In the editorial, the Trump aide claimed that he was not alone in his “resistance” to the president and that the cabal of appointees have vowed “to preserve our democratic institutions while thwarting Mr. Trump’s more misguided impulses until he is out of office.”

“In other countries,” Wallace said, they sometimes call this a coup.”

In response, analyst and reporter Matt Miller noted that the New York Times op-ed answers a question many people have had since Trump took office — “what is the obligation of an official serving in the government when they see the president acting recklessly, at times in violation of the law?”

“The question I would really pose for the author of this piece, whoever he or she may be, is: is writing an op-ed like this enough?” Miller mused. “Certainly you have a duty if you’re inside the government to try to prevent the president from acting irrationally and prevent him from doing things that would harm the country. But is your duty to the country not just to constrain him, but also to blow a whistle to the American public? Anonymously is one way, but should you be offering testimony to Congress?”

‘The end is near’: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow explains what the anonymous NY Times op-ed writer wants the public to do

This week has been a difficult one for President Donald Trump and his administration. However, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow hopes the mind-blowing anonymous New York Times op-ed is the beginning of the end for Trump.

“Previously unimaginable things keep happening now in our politics, in the White House specifically,” Maddow said after giving a recap of the plotline for “The Manchurian Candidate.”

“Unprecedented behavior by a U.S. President means literally, specifically …we don’t know of examples of any other president ever behaving this way. That’s not only to say these things are remarkable, there’s a practical consequence of these things being unprecedented.”

“Court precedent is of no help, in terms of us sorting out as a country the range of options we might reasonably have for how to respond to a situation like the one that we are in. History can’t help us; court precedent can’t help us. Fiction can at least help us imagine it, right? There’s Frank Sinatra in ‘The Manchurian Candidate,’ desperately trying to un-program ‘The Manchurian Candidate.'”

“The 25th Amendment spells out in that instance the vice president and a majority of the cabinet would agree the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office,” she explained. “With the Senate and House so notified, the vice president would then assume the powers and duties of the office as acting president.”

Maddow explained that it becomes more complicated from there, but that the gist is that if the cabinet and VP decide the president cannot fulfill his oath of office, they can boot him.

This isn’t the first time the 25th Amendment was proposed. Maddow cited Michael Wolff’s book Fire and Fury, where Steve Bannon is quoted twice talking about the 25th Amendment.

“Spicer, Priebus, [Gary] Cohn, Powell, Bannon, Tillerson, Mattis, Mnuchin had traveled through the stages of adventure, challenge, frustration, battle, self-justification and doubt before finally having to confront the very real likelihood that the president they worked for…did not have the act to function in his job,” Wolff wrote. “The debate, as Bannon put it, was not about whether the president’s situation was bad, but whether it was 25th Amendment bad.”

Bannon is also quoted toward the end of the book saying there is a one-third chance Trump will make it to the end of his term.

“Maybe we should have seen this coming,” Maddow said. “That book with warnings about the president being removed from office this way, that book came out the very start of the year in January. Since then, we got the first book from a former senior advisor to the president. She chose as the title of her book, the word Unhinged, and she was not talking about herself.”

She noted the Bob Woodward’s book would be released next week, but the passages already leaked cited that senior officials are fearful the president is too unstable to lead. They stole documents from his Oval Office desk so that they could protect the country from the president signing something insane. Fear also says that the military is outright ignoring the commander in chief, up to and including the assassination of foreign leaders.

“There is a reason why the U.S. military is not answering to civilian leadership anymore [is because of] the stuff of dystopian novels and movies like ‘Seven Days in May,'” Maddow said. “Those things make it into political thrillers because the thrill is they’re supposed to scare us. In this case, today, not ‘Seven Days in May,’ a touch of ‘Camp David,’ someone in the White House is trying to warn the country the president is nuts and unfit and the senior people who work-around him know it.”

She went on to warn, “the end is near. Maybe in the form of the invocation of the 25th Amendment by the vice president of the United States and the majority of the president’s cabinet. If this is what it appears to be, if this is true, then, one, hey, this is a remarkable time for the Senate to Russia ahead to try to install a lifetime appointment. Two, if they’re not too busy trying to move ahead with the president’s nominee for this lifetime appointment, hey, maybe this is something Congress might want to look into.”

The inevitable final question, according to Maddow, is what was the catalyst for those in the White House taking these steps to warn the public.

“The 25th Amendment discussions in the president’s cabinet may have been secret before, but they are public now on purpose because of somebody who works at the senior levels of the Trump administration,” she noted. “Why did they make this public now? This is a stark warning from somewhere near the top of the government. If the president is amoral and anti-democratic and erratic and impulsive and reckless and all the rest of it, then, what do we expect him to do next now in response to this? Who’s ready for it inside and outside the administration?”

Kellyanne Conway barks at Chuck Todd after he suggests anti-Trump essay not illegal: ‘You don’t know that’

Kellyanne Conway, White House special counselor to President Donald Trump, objected on Sunday after Meet the Press host Chuck Todd suggested that no laws had been broken by an administration staffer who anonymously wrote a New York Times essay that was critical of the president.

“We’re not at war with anybody so you can’t really accuse anybody of treason,” Todd explained to Conway, alluding to the fact that Trump had brought up the idea of “treason” on Twitter.

Oh come on,” Conway complained. “People are openly talking about the 25th Amendment and impeachment. It’s such nonsense.”

“The president of the United States wants the Attorney General to investigate,” Todd noted. “What law was broken here that the Attorney General needs to investigate?”

“It depends,” Conway shot back. “There could be and there could not be. And so you don’t know that and I don’t know that.”

“Has he ordered the investigation into who wrote this op-ed?” Todd asked.

“I won’t talk about that,” Conway insisted. “He has said publicly that he thinks we should find out who this person is. I don’t believe in giving this person so much elevation and oxygen.”

“So, it’s possible he’s given an order to the Department of Justice to investigate this?” Todd pressed.

“He has said publicly what he feels,” Conway remarked, dodging the question.

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace unleashed on President Donald Trump’s appearance in Pennslyvania to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11.

Trump disembarked Air Force One pumping his fists in the air as if he was about to attend a rally, rather than remembering the lives lost as Americans fought to save lives from the terrorists headed to the U.S. Capitol.

“Every president handles the role of consoler-in-chief differently,” Wallace explained. “But it is in the moments that a president has to channel the nation’s grief that we see his true nature.”

She recalled President Barack Obama’s “finest moments” responding to mass shootings after Newtown and Sandy Hook as well as the State of the Union addresses that followed. Wallace then remembered the ways in which President George W. Bush connected with first responders who ran into collapsing burning buildings on Sept. 11, hoping they could save even a few lives.

“So when Donald Trump traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, today, to honor the families of the victims of flight 93, it is fair to say that he hadn’t quite passed the consoler-in-chief test yet,” Wallace continued. “The fact that he woke up on a day like September 11th, and started tweeting attacks against his own Justice Department and FBI, didn’t help him set the tone for solemnity or respect. Neither did this image. That’s him pumping his fists on the tarmac upon arrival.”

She said that the bizarre statements about 9/11 don’t make things any better.

“I am a harsh critic of this president, but even I do not believe that he got off the plane and intended to offend anybody,” Wallace conceded. “So this, to me, this inability to control an impulse to pump your fists on 9/11 on your way to Shanksville. I’ve been there a couple times. It is like, I mean, not to be too graphic, but there were remains in the trees. It is as sacred of a memorial as exists in this country. And to see that image, I’m back to the questions about his competence and fitness. There’s something wrong with him.”

Panelists agreed, noting it seemed Trump viewed this as a kind of political rally, rather than a memorial. They recalled other incidents where he was supposed to give solemn speeches and instead flubbed it.

“I talked about presidents Obama and Bush because, again, you know, President Obama at that moment, I think, spoke for every American,” Wallace continued. “I think Newtown was something that was — everyone felt that pain and he spoke to it for us. I think 9/11, as I said, you know, the policies that ensued were plenty controversial but in that moment, George W. Bush seemed to be able to capture the sort of commitment of our country to build ourselves back and stand up to them.”

She noted Trump seems to be missing that “chip” in his being.

“During the convention. Before he was elected. The one-week debate with the widow of Sgt. La David T. Johnson whose husband died,” she continued. “Why are we so timid of talking about what seems to be a real deficiency in his character?”

‘Cohen knows about the pee pee tape’: MSNBC panel explains Trump fixer’s connection to Russia collusion

Former Donald Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s efforts to “flip” and turn state’s evidence to testify against the president could be devastating for the commander-in-chief.

Cohen may have information about the so-called “pee pee tape” of Russian prostitutes desecrating a hotel suite bed in Russia where President Barack Obama had once stayed, the panel on MSNBC’s “AM Joy” noted. The salacious details of the alleged encounter where detailed in the salacious dossier written by former British spy Christopher Steele.

“He taped him as a lawyer — which is unthinkable of to me — he taped his client, MSNBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos explained. “He knows everything about Trump.”

Elie Mystal, the editor of “Above the Law,” agreed.

“Cohen knows about the pee pee tape,” Mystal suggested. “If that’s real, Cohen knows about it.”

“That’s actually how Cohen, I generally agree that Cohen is more dangerous to Trump personally, but that’s how Cohen gets wrapped up into the Russia thing,” he continued.

“Who talked to who about the pee pee tape? That’s kind of where Cohen shows up,” he added. “If he knows something about that — that’s gross — but it’s like that’s the connection back into Russia.”

“We never want to see it,” host Joy Reid acknowledged.
