Rachel Maddow, Democrats used misleading Barr video to suggest he lied to Congress, reporter finds

MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" and certain congressional Democrats used a misleading video in order to suggest Attorney General William Barr lied to lawmakers, a Washington Free Beacon report found Wednesday.

Maddow played a clip of the exchange between Barr and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., from a hearing in early April about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report. Her show tweeted out the clip Tuesday night.

In that hearing, Barr replied to Van Hollen that he didn’t know if Mueller agreed with a "conclusion" of his about the report. As Free Beacon reporter Alex Griswold noted, it came after Van Hollen asked Barr about his findings regarding obstruction-of-justice allegations.

"In context, it's obvious Barr wasn't being asked whether Mueller agreed with his ‘conclusion’ meaning his four-page summary, his framing of his facts, etc., but about his ultimate conclusion on obstruction of justice," Griswold wrote.

MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace bursts into laughter at Bill Barr’s cowardly hiding from House lawyers

Attorney General Bill Barr was a no-show Thursday morning for his scheduled hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, objecting to the format proposed by the Democrats in charge of the committee because they wanted to subject him to questioning by staff counsel.

And when MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace was re-capping the day’s news on “Deadline: White House” Thursday afternoon, she couldn’t keep a straight face while she read the details of this cowardly turn of events.

“The White House attack on Mr. Mueller comes as the fireworks continue on Capitol Hill over Attorney General William Barr standing up the House Judiciary committee today,” she said. “He canceled, he says, ’cause he doesn’t to answer questions from lawyers!”

She laughed. “Kinda funny, he’s the AG! Pssh!”

She continued laughing but tried to keep it together as she went on: “Barr’s disappearing act comes as he faces accusations that he lied under oath about his clash with Mueller over the rollout of his report.”

Rachel Maddow blisters Trump for making a fool of John Bolton: ‘How do you come to work anymore?’

On Friday, MNSBC’s Rachel Maddow pointed out one of the lesser-considered consequences of President Donald Trump’s friendly phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin: it makes his war hawk national security adviser John Bolton look like a fool for his aggressive posture against Russia in the uprising against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

“Hey, John Bolton, hey, Mike Pompeo, are you guys enjoying your jobs right now?” said Maddow. “You each thought your job this week was to name and shame and threaten and counter Russian government involvement in Venezuela while saber-rattling about how everybody else better get out of the way because the U.S. is really mad about it. Guys, turns out your actual job is figuring out how and why you work for a president that says whatever Vladimir Putin tells him.”

“I mean, I mean, just to be clear here, I mean, how do you come to work anymore if you’re John Bolton? Regardless of what you thought about John Bolton before this, his whole career, his track record, I mean, just think of John Bolton as a human being. This is what John Bolton, human being, thought his job was this week. Again, whether or not — whether you like what he’s saying here or not, this is what they’ve had him out there saying.”

“Look, the Russians like nothing better than putting a thumb in our eye,” Maddow continued. “They’re using the Cubans as surrogates, they’d love to get effective control of a country in this hemisphere. We made it clear to Russians in a lot of conversations at a lot of different levels some of which are going to continue today why we think this behavior is unacceptable to us.”

“You thought that was your job,” Maddow concluded, addressing Bolton. “Turns out not at all, not after Vladimir Putin gets done with President Trump today.”

MSNBC’s Morning Joe lashes Lindsey Graham and GOP enablers for letting Trump’s team shred the Constitution

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said President Donald Trump and his administration were breaking the law “without a second thought” — and only Democrats cared.

The “Morning Joe” blasted Trump administration officials for flagrantly ignoring subpoenas or offering misleading testimony, and he said the legislative branch had a constitutional duty to oversee the executive branch.

It’s obvious to anybody that’s watching either in America or overseas there has become over the past several weeks a sustained and increasingly quickening assault on the rule of law,” Scarborough said, “whether you look at what (Attorney General William) Barr did in his testimony, whether you look at the fact that he probably committed perjury in the House and the Senate, and meanwhile the Trumpists say nothing.”

“The Secretary of Treasury (Steve Mnuchin) comes out saying the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee has the right to see any Americans’ tax returns,” he added, “but we’re just not going to comply with the law of the land — and they do it without a second thought. It’s not a constitutional crisis, they’re breaking the law.”

He said multiple administration officials should be held in contempt of Congress, but Republicans simply didn’t care.

“They’re in contempt of Congress,” Scarborough said. “You look at what Lindsey Graham is doing — they don’t care. The Republicans don’t care. So history has chosen the Democratic Party at this point in time to be the only party in America who will stand up and defend the rule of law, the only party. There is no one else there, and as a former Republican and as a guy with a lot of Republican friends, it makes me sad.”

“But this moment in history has provided us only one political party that can stand up and defend the rule of law, and that’s on the Democrats,” he added. “Whether it’s the smart political calculation or not, the Constitution requires it.”

Stephen Colbert Questions MSNBC's impartiality during interview with ‘The Beat’ anchor Ari Melber

Stephen Colbert questioned the impartiality of MSNBC during an interview with “The Beat” anchor Ari Melber while discussing the possible impeachment of Donald Trump.

Melber was a guest on “The Late Show” earlier this week where he sat down with the comedian for a discussion about the Mueller Report and whether he thinks Congress has a legitimate case to impeach the sitting president.

“What do the people over at the People’s Republic of MSNBC say,” the host joked. “Do you and your colleagues think impeachment is a good idea? What’s the vibe over there?”

Melber explained that the report provides evidence of felonies allegedly committed by Trump while in office. He noted that he finds it “silly” that Democrats in Congress were asking for the report, but won’t take action now that they’ve got it.

“It was several felonies in the report. And now [Congress] are saying, ‘Well we don’t want to impeach because of politics,” Melber said. “I don’t think that’s a good reason to do anything really.”

After receiving an applause break from the crowd, Melber continued: “But... there’s always a ‘but’ after applause... It’s up to Congress and the country to figure it out. We’re not reporting it out and gunning for one outcome.”

“Really?” Colbert asked sarcastically. “You guys don’t advocate at all over at MSNBC? Come on, you guys bang a drum over there sometimes.”

Melber was hesitant to speak on behalf of any part of the network other than “The Beat” saying, “On ‘The Beat,’ we’re not advocating for an outcome.”

MSNBC host Joy Reid accused of lying about Bush era-Guantanamo officials starving detainees

Guantanamo Bay has never been without its haters, but now MSNBC host Joy Reid is being accused of slandering former President George W. Bush for saying he starved Guantanamo Bay detainees during his administration. During a panel discussion on her show, Reid declared that, 'During the Bush era, we were torturing people... starving people in Guantanamo.' Critics are calling Reid's words, 'not just a lie - a scurrilous slander.'

MSNBC host Joy Reid has been accused of slandering President George W. Bush for declaring that Guantanamo Bay detainees were starved during his administration.

“During the Bush era, we were torturing people in our custody in Iraq, etc. You know, starving people in Guantanamo,” Reid said during Saturday’s episode of “AM Joy” during a panel discussion about whether or not leaders should fear future prosecution for actions that occur during foreign intervention.

Media Research Center contributing editor Mark Finkelstein didn’t appreciate the comment, which he called “not just a lie—a scurrilous slander.”

“The truth is precisely the opposite. During the Bush era, Guantanamo officials took forceful measures to prevent people from starving,” Finkelstein wrote. “A number of prisoners had gone on hunger strikes to protest prison conditions… rather than let the prisoners starve themselves to death, the prison officials force-fed them.”

Finkelstein added that there has actually been “criticism of the force-feeding practice,” adding “be that as it may, it is the precise obverse of starving the prisoners.”

MSNBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

This is not the first time that Reid has been accused of lying. Last year, Reid famously claimed homophobic and other hateful posts on her pre-fame blog were somehow planted by hackers – for which she reportedly alerted the FBI about the “crime.” MSNBC even circulated a much-panned statement from a computer hacking “expert” which sought to make that case.

The MSNBC host eventually got emotional on the air when her hacking claim fell apart and admitted it seemed unlikely it had happened, and then claimed that she didn’t recall making the offensive remarks, for which she apologized anyway.

“I genuinely do not believe I wrote those hateful things,” Reid told her viewers, adding, "The person I am now is not the person I was then."

Maddow: Trump’s Mueller ‘delay strategy’ isn’t working — and is destined to fail

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow on Monday concluded that President Donald Trump’s stonewalling strategy is not working in the federal courts.

“I don’t know who’s paying for the legal fees for these new lawyers the president and his family have hired to try to keep his taxes and financials a secret but they are definitely putting in their billable hours,” the host noted. “You can wallpaper most of Trump Tower already with their voluminous filings to various courts. “

“Those filings make clear baseline that what they’re trying to do is earn themselves as much delay as they can get — just to slow this thing down as much as possible,” Maddow explained. “They may not be able to stop the president’s financial history and taxes from being exposed to investigators in the long run, but they are going to slow it down as much as they can for as long as they can.”

She noted a new judge’s ruling in Trump’s lawsuit against this own accounting firm, Mazars USA, to prevent them handing over his financials to investigators.

“Well, just before we got on the air tonight, the judge in the Mazars case ruled in response to that pleading from the president’s lawyers and the judge said no. The judge is not having it,” she noted. “So the delay strategy is not working out.”

“In the Mazars case, again, where the president is suing his own accounting firm to stop that firm from complying with a subpoena that requires them to hand over his financial documents, his lawyers are trying to slow it down,” Maddow said. *“The judge says no, it is full steam ahead, we’re going to have the hearing on the injunction question, we’re going to have the hearing on the merits, we’re going to have the judge ruling tomorrow. The president’s lawyers are not able to slow this thing down. See you in court tomorrow.”

MSNBC Guest: Bolton’s Iran Meeting at CIA Has ‘Dark Echoes’ of Cheney’s Exaggeration of Iraq WMD Threat

On MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, a former national security aide to Vice President Joe Biden warned that National Security Adviser John Bolton’s recent decision to travel to the CIA to discuss Iran has “dark echos of kind of the machinations that Dick Cheney was involved in to manipulate intelligence prior to the 2003 Iraq War.”

Colin Kahl, who worked as Biden’s national security adviser from 2014 to 2017, expressed his concerns to host Rachel Maddow about a recent NBC News report on an “unusual meeting” at Langley by Bolton and other top Trump administration military and intelligence officials.

“I think the worry comes in two directions,” Kahl said. “There’s definitely a war camp inside the Trump Administration. I mean, John Bolton for decades has had his sights set on attacking Iran militaily, overthrowing its regime. Secretary [of State Joe] Pompeo, prior to becoming Secretary of State, was also quite hawkish on Iran. You don’t have reasonable voices around the president anymore like [former National Security Adviser] H.R. McMaster or former Secretary [of Defense James] Mattis, who weren’t doves but did caution restraint as it related to Iran.”

Karl’s comments invoking Cheney, the CIA, and the Iraq War stem from a seminal June 2003 Washington Post report that found, while compiling the 2002 National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, CIA analysts felt pressure to align their conclusions with the George W. Bush administration’s public claims on Iraqi WMDs after multiple trips to Langley by Vice President Dick Cheney. “The visits by the vice president and his chief of staff, I. Lewis ‘Scooter’ Libby, ‘sent signals, intended or otherwise, that a certain output was desired from here,'” the Post quoted a senior CIA official saying.

Could the same White House pressure to re-package intelligence to sell the necessity of war against a Middle East country be happening all over again, Maddow asked?

“It’s conceivable that Bolton and others went to CIA with the goal of trying to gin up intelligence to justify Bolton’s threat about a week ago to unleash unrelenting force against Iran if they attacked U.S. Interests in the region,” Kahl acknowledged. “It’s also possible, however, that the conversation was about covert action to undermine Iran. I think you can see the CIA meeting potentially [as] in the same vein as the Pentagon meeting that you talked about just a few minutes ago, of the administration exploring options both covert and overt to take on the Iranian regime if it engages in provocations or attacks against US Forces or if it, you know, follows through with backing away on its commitments and starts to restart its nuclear program. So I think we’re at a very dangerous moment.”

Rachel Maddow Destroys AG Barr’s Defense of Trump: Our President Could Be ‘Freest Criminal on Earth’

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow tore into Attorney General William Barr and the White House counsel for President Donald Trump, explaining how their new, sweeping interpretation of the presidency’s executive powers puts its above any criminal investigation, criminal indictment, and even Congressional oversight: “I mean you really could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot someone,” and get away with it.

“If you have ever, ever personally had truly epic, truly wicked criminal ambitions for yourself, now you know what the job is for you,” Maddow added. “I mean, if you were so lucky as to get elected president, you could not only by definition not commit any crimes, you could not be charged. You could not be investigated. You’d be the freest criminal on Earth if you were lucky enough to be elected president of the United States and if you had Attorney General William Barr working for you.”

Maddow’s was reacting, in part, to a 12-page letter from the White House counsel’s office released Wednesday that demanded Congress end any further investigations into to what it called a “do-over” of the Special Counsel prove. The letter also warned of blanket refusals to comply with Congressional requests for documents and subpoenas to testify, a move that Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) called “preposterous” and the equivalent of treating Trump like he is “king.”

Combined with AG Barr’s similarly broad defense of a president’s right to question and even fire those investigating him if he or she simply believes there’s no basis for the investigation, this White House, Maddow claimed, is radically reshaping the power of the executive branch. “The Trump White House position is that they really are planning just to defy all subpoenas. One year of Watergate is enough. You must stop investigating. No witnesses will be made available. No testimony will be provided. No documents will be handed over, nothing.”

Maddow’s invocation of Watergate was no accident, and the Trump White House’s latest legal justifications are strikingly similar to those of former President Richard Nixon, who was impeached — and ultimately resigned — after a long, multi-prong investigation into the Watergate break-in. In an infamous 1977 interview with British journalist David Frost, Nixon offered his own legal interpretation of the White House’s power, saying, “when the president does it, that means it is not illegal,” which would, effectively, put the presidency above the law.

But, in Maddow’s estimation, AG Barr and the White House Counsel were all but saying the same thing. “Clearly that’s not the way America is set up, right? Clearly that’s untenable,” Maddow said. “But it just means that we are in an untenable situation right now, which means there will be we’ve got these assertions from the White House. We’ve got these subpoenas from Congress. We’ve got the judiciary now getting involved in the first time, trying to handle these remarkable claims from the White House about how they are immune from all scrutiny. But that’s where we are. Mark this moment in history. That’s where we are.”

Rachel Maddow connects Trump’s personal ‘goon squad’ to Mike Flynn obstruction call

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow struggled to wrap her mind around why President Donald Trump is not being impeached after it was revealed his personal attorney attempted to influence Mike Flynn’s cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller.

“Defendant informed the government of multiple instances, both before and after his guilty plea, where either he or his attorneys received communication from persons connected to the Administration or Congress that could have affected both his willingness to cooperate and the completeness of that cooperation,” the court filing said. “The defendant even provided a voicemail recording of one such communication.”

“So before and after Mike Flynn pled guilty people connected to the Trump Administration and also people connected to Congress, who’s that?” she wondered.

“They were reaching out to Mike Flynn to talk to him about what exactly he planned to tell prosecutors and whether he planned to cooperate with them and how much and on what topics. We know that one of those instances of outreach from persons connected to the Trump Administration was referenced as the voice mail here, which we think is probably the same reference from Mueller’s report about a lawyer for the president, ‘the president’s personal counsel’ leaving Mike Flynn a voice mail,” she explained.

“This is amazing,” she noted.

“And in the Mueller report, this is sort of a particularly mafia-esque episode in Mueller’s report. I mean this is literally the part where Flynn is about to cooperate, right? He pulls out of the joint defense agreement, it’s pretty clear he’s about to plead guilty. He’s about to start cooperating. And he in the dead of night gets the warning from the president’s goon squad letting Mike Flynn know if he’s thinking about cooperating you know what, Mike, here’s what you might want to keep in mind,” she reported.

“And I mean just a little personal aside here, how is the president not being impeached for obstruction of justice right now?” she asked. “I mean, that episode alone”

“I realize there’s a lot of equities involved in terms of whether or not the president is going to be impeached for stuff like this,” Maddow noted. “But this is the president’s personal counsel calling up Flynn and being like, ‘You know, it might be a national security issue if you said anything about the president. You know how much the president likes you, wouldn’t want me to tell him you turned hostile on him, would you? I’m going to go ahead and tell him. I’m going to tell him you’ve become hostile to him if you cooperate, you sure you want to cooperate?'”

“This is like the stuff that gets cut out of a B-movie because it’s a little too ham-handed in terms of explaining to the audience how this particular crime family does its business,” she added.
