Maddow exclusive: Missouri Republicans now forcing ‘state-sanctioned sexual assault’ for every woman seeking an abortion

The crackdown on a woman’s right to choose being waged by Republicans in Missouri has escalated to the point of forced pelvic examinations, Rachel Maddow reported Thursday.

“What we have discovered is that as of Thursday of last week, as of a week ago today, we can now report that every woman seeking a legal abortion in the state of Missouri is being subjected to a mandatory, medically unnecessary, pelvic examination by order of the state government,” Maddow reported.

“Only now, before they let you go from that first appointment, you must, by order of the state, take off your clothes and submit to an intrusive vaginal inspection that you do not need and your doctor does not want to give you. This is the latest thing the state of Missouri is doing as of this week as they’re trying to force the last clinic in the state out of business,” Maddow reported.

One doctor described it as “state-sanctioned sexual assault.”

Six minutes before midnight on Saturday, the president of the United States publicly denied ever having a friendship with a television host.

Hours after attacking MSNBC, President Donald Trump attacked MSNBC anchor Donny Deutsch, the host of the new show “Saturday Night Politics.”

“Little Donny Deutsch, whose show, like his previous shoebiz (sic) tries, is a disaster, has been saying that I had been a friend of his. This is false,” Trump tweeted.

He then broadened his attack to include CNN anchor Erin Burnett.

“He, and separately Erin Burnett, used to beg me to be on episodes of the Apprentice (both were bad), but that was it. Hardly knew him, other than to know he was, and is, a total loser. When he makes statements about me, they are made up, he knows nothing,” Trump argued.

Eight minutes after midnight, Trump seemed to realize how his tweet was being perceived.

“I know it is not at all ‘presidential’ to hit back at the corrupt media, or people who work for the corrupt media, when they make false statements about me or the Trump administration. Problem is, if you don’t hit back, people believe the fake news is true. So we’ll hit back,” Trump said.

He did not cite any false statements that were made.

‘Trump’s 2020 campaign is open for business’ for more foreign election meddling: MSNBC host

In a Wednesday interview with ABC host George Stephanopoulos, the president admitted on camera that he doesn’t think it should be illegal for a candidate to take “dirt” from a foreign adversary that has hacked an opposing campaign. It prompted the host to wonder if it was a signal to other countries as the new election begins.

MSNBC host Chris Matthews said that it’s very clear the president is signaling “Trump 2020 campaign is open for business” from foreign leaders.

“Two years of the Mueller report and now we have the president’s motive,” Matthews said. “There is nong wrong with taking dirt from the Russians. It’s a shocking statement from a president who won with help from Moscow in 2016 and signals to foreign governments around the world that his 2020 campaign is open for business.”

Trump has continued to make friends with Russian leaders as well as North Korea, who has been known to hack United States businesses.

“It’s so inconsistent with the values we all understand our politicians live by, Republican and Democrat,” said NBC national security reporter Ken Dilanian. “It’s outside the mainstream. Stephanopoulos went on to say, ‘By the way, had a debate prep book from George W. Bush. He called the FBI.’ He didn’t use it because that was the ethos. And Trump is blowing it all up. And you’re absolutely right, he’s sending a signal to the Chinese and the Russians and anyone who want to interfere, it’s open season. Hack, investigate, use intelligence methods to get incriminating information about opponents and hand it to Donald Trump.”

“When I heard the president say that and nothing wrong with taking dirt from a foreign power, I thought that’s why his lawyers wouldn’t let him give live testimony,” Matthew said. “Because they were afraid this character would just do a Perry Mason and say ‘All right, I did. So what?'”

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow on Monday examined the motivations for President Donald Trump freaking out over the latest bombshell New York Times revelations about his Russia policy.

Maddow identified two key takeaways for her viewers.

“The weird things here are two things about the way the story has broken and both have to do with President Trump,” she noted.

“The first really strange thing about the reaction is President Trump’s response to it online. This story apparently sort of made him flip out,” she said, putting his Twitter reactions on screen.

“Why is the president so freaked out by this news article?” Maddow wondered.

“First of all, if The Times report being something that is not true and the U.S. hasn’t developed this capacity, why would it be treason for The New York Times to report that the U.S. has done this?” she wondered. “It would be treason? Really?”

“Also, why are you so flipped out about the potential consequence?” she asked. “What do you think the consequence might be of Russia thinking we have upped our cyber capacity against them?”

“What’s the scary consequence for you? The president is reacting to this like this is the worst thing in the world to have a new offensive capacity towards Russia. Why is that so scary to you that that’s in the paper?” she continued.

“It’s a weird response from the president, what is he worried is going to happen now that that’s public news? What do you think the consequence is going to be of Russia learning we have done this?” she asked.

“The other weird part is the president might have freaked out about this news. He might have first learned it from The New York Times,” Maddow noted. “Cybercommand may have been doing this and developing this offensive capacity in Russia without ever telling him that is what they were doing.”

MSNBC guest obliterates Trump for ducking facts in E. Jean Carroll sex assault accusation: ‘She’s the 16th woman’

On MSNBC’s “Up with David Gura,” Washington Examiner reporter Laura Barrón-López castigated President Donald Trump for his attempt to silence E. Jean Carroll, who alleges the president raped her in a department store in the 90s in her upcoming book.

“Laura, what should we make of the response to this?” said Gura. “The president coming out with this statement very quickly after this was published online, i’m going to read a little bit from it, because I think one facet of this particularly is worth noting. ‘Shame on those who make up false stories of assault to try to get publicity for themselves or sell a book or carry out a political agenda, like Julie Swetnick, who falsely accused Justice Brett Kavanaugh.’ This arc, this line the president is drawing to one of the accusers who came out in the confirmation hearing.”

“This is something that Trump typically does, which is pick an example of something he thinks makes the rest of the accounts or everything else just false,” said Barrón-López. “And he has denied all of these allegations, and he likes to paint them as fake news or as completely made up and that there’s no truth to any of them, but she’s the 16th woman now to come forward against him. And we see no real response.”

“Ever since the tape that game out of the 2016 election where you actually heard him talk about physically assaulting a woman, other than the initial response to that from Republicans, they don’t talk about it anymore, they don’t really address when another women comes forward to accuse Trump, and so I expect there will be no response to this,” said Barrón-López.

Pundits find unrelated and irrelevant anecdotes to "prove" or "disprove" the allegation.

Now, mark this. In coming weeks we're gonna hear from "witnesses" who want to corroborate Carroll's story. We're gonna have other "victims" claiming they, too, were assaulted by Trump. This is classic despicable tactics. Shooter can hardly wait for this investigation to get started.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski shamed Vice President Mike Pence for lying about the Trump administration’s treatment of migrant children at the border.

The vice president disputed multiple reports and the administration’s own lawyers about conditions at the detention facilities and blamed congressional Democrats for overcrowding, and the “Morning Joe” co-hosts condemned the self-professed Christian’s statements.

“That’s just a lie,” Scarborough said.

“You’re pathetic,” Brzezinski said, and called him out for “chortling” as he justified the harsh treatment of children.

“Mike Pence is lying about children living in torturous positions right there,” Scarborough continued. “Mike Pence, who claims to be a Christian — I’m sure he is, I’m not questioning his faith, but he uses it as a political badge of honor.”

“Mike should read the Gospels again and see what Jesus says about the treatment of little children,” he added. “You can start at Luke 17:2, something about millstones being hung around people’s neck. You’ve got to explain to us what does the administration think they are gaining by allowing children to walk around with lice and walk around without diapers and 8-year-olds having to take care of 2 or 3-year-olds? What does the administration think they gain from that?”

Scarborough called out evangelical leaders and other self-professed Christian lawmakers for standing silent about the administration’s cruelty to children.

“Do Republican senators, I’m dead serious, I know a lot of them — a lot of them also men and women of faith,” he said. “Do they think that this is permissible with the Christian faith they claim, and also being members of the United States Senate, do they think this is permissible?”

“They’re living in squalor,” Scarborough added. “They’re living like animals, they’re living like dogs, because of the United States of America.”

Ali Velshi Debunks John Delaney's Lies About Medicare For All To His Face
John Delaney's unending stream of right wing and insurance company talking points will make your head hurt, but Velshi has an antidote.

Here's a piece of advice for Democratic 2020 hopefuls: "No, we can't" is not a particularly helpful or effective campaign slogan. Nevertheless, 2020 non-starter John Delaney made the rounds on Thursday to spread his message of defeatism to all who would listen.

He led off with this declaration: "I've been to rural America quite a bit and we have a crisis in healthcare in rural America and there's not one rural hospital in this country that would stay open if we had Medicare for All based on the way it's described in that bill. Just they would all close. They are all just on the edge. Medicare rates as the gentleman just said are half of the rates of private insurance. About a third of their patients are private insurance. If you cut the reimbursement rates of a third of their patients are private insurance. If you cut the reimbursement rates of a third of their patients by half and they're running barely breaking even they would close. It's just something that no one talks about."

I want everyone to think about what he just said and wonder aloud why it wouldn't be as simple as incentivizing rural hospitals to stay open, the same way the government now incentivizes insurers to keep rural hospitals open. I mean, just raise the rates. That isn't too difficult, not really.

Delaney declared that if we run on Medicare for All, as he framed it, Dems would lose the election by 10 points. Because this former Congressman has his finger on the pulse of America, folks! He knows that everyone loves their private insurance, especially fighting for claims payments and wading through piles of paperwork.

Ali Velshi was not having it, and he tried to overcome Delaney's bullheaded filibuster
long enough to get some facts in to the discussion but it was tough. For her part, Stephanie Ruhle just offered some fine eyerolls.

The whole discussion is bonkers, but please stay for the moments where Delaney insists Bernie Sanders' plan makes private insurance "illegal" (It doesn't) and where he insists that it would "take away" healthcare from everyone (it won't).

I would also remind everyone that Medicare Advantage is a way of bundling all of the benefits together and contracting insurers to act as the...single payer. For all of Delaney's worry about single payer insurance, Medicare is single payer and contracts with insurers all over the country to bundle those benefits. And guess what? When it's done right, it works. I'll hold up Kaiser Permanente as a shining example of that here in California. Even though I am not on Medicare (though I'd GLADLY BUY IN) they've handled all the payments to network and out-of-network providers for me, and I haven't had to fill out one single claim form. Not one.

Here's just one example of Delaney's lying BS, along with Ali Velshi pushing back on it:

DELANEY: I just said [Warren] outsourced her plan to Senator Sanders. And that's a huge problem. He is not even a Democrat. When I first announced I was running for president everyone said you have to be on the Medicare for all -- that's a nonstarter--

VELSHI: I'm a Canadian and I believe that Senator Sanders' plan is the best one to bring our costs down because it's what most other developed countries have.

DELANEY: No, it's not --

VELSHI: It is.

DELANEY: No, it's not. Germany, France, Denmark, Sweden, they have mixed models.

VELSHI: They are universal healthcare models.

DELANEY: I'm calling for universal healthcare, too. Why do we also have to say you lose your option.

VELSHI: A French hospital and a Swiss hospital do not get different rates based on the way in which a person is insured. So your argument about rates is an interesting argument and Larry suggests its right, but the idea that you're pinning that on weirdness on Bernie Sanders, I'm just telling you 54 other countries have it. Every other country...has some form of universality in which everybody's rates are paid at the same level.

DELANEY: I'm sorry, but you are wrong about that. They have universal healthcare but they don't have a single-payer system. Medicare for all is a single-payer system.

I'm not sure why Delaney is so hung up on a single payer system. Would he be whining if it was United Health who was the single payer? Of all the things to complain about, this one strikes me as being the weirdest. So they went back and forth about it, and then the discussion turns to the UK system, where Delaney spews right-wing talking points like they were shot out of an AR-15.

DELANEY: Because [Medicare Advantage providers] have networks and they advantage the care.

VELSHI: Right. That's what a larger system, a universal system does.

DELANEY: But medicare doesn't do that right now.

VELSHI: Right. That's why Bernie Sanders is calling for medicare for all so that everything is networked.

DELANEY: What you just said about Medicare Advantage is not true. It is an option that our seniors get, they don't pay anything more for it.

VELSHI: I understand, John, but whether the senior pays for it, the insurance system pays for it, the government pays for it or your private insurance pays for it there are higher costs and lower costs. When I say something costs more and you say it doesn't cost the user more, it costs the system more. So the United States pays more than double what all industrialized countries pay for healthcare, that's a cost that might be borne for you, might be --

DELANEY: But there's a reason for it. If you need a specialist in the UK and it's not emergency care you've got to wait about nine months.

VELSHI: That's just not true.

DELANEY: It is, too, true. I just had a friend of mine who had a hip replacement in the UK that had to wait nine months.

[Crosstalk]

DELANEY: Listen, my facts are 100% right. The gentleman from Kaiser [Foundation] just confirmed it. Medicare doesn't pay the cost of healthcare. That's a fact. Private insurance pays twice what Medicare does for hospitals. If every hospital were reimbursed at the Medicare rate they would close. So what's your answer to that? What's your answer to that?

My argument -- you're basically arguing that hospitals should close. This is economics, you are an economist. You have to understand -- that's fine. I'm not making that argument that millions of . Americans who are going to lose their healthcare.

VELSHI: Why would you lose your healthcare?

DELANEY: Because it makes it illegal.

It goes on. Watch it. But I will say again that every issue John Delaney raised can be addressed in a way that would work better for Americans than the private for-profit insurance system. There is absolutely no reason on this earth for ANY Democrat to be incorporating right-wing talking points into their campaign rhetoric and the sooner those Dems find themselves a cushy lobbying job and take themselves out of the running, the better.

‘Is he involved?’ MSNBC’s Mika asks why Trump’s labor secretary let Jeffrey Epstein off the hook for child rape

MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski wondered aloud whether President Donald Trump’s secretary of labor might be personally implicated in the Jeffrey Epstein child trafficking case.

Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta signed off on a non-prosecution agreement with Epstein more than a decade ago, when he was a federal prosecutor in South Florida, and that controversial deal that has fallen under new scrutiny following a series of Miami Herald reports — and now with the arrest this weekend of the 66-year-old financier.

“Justice was not served in that case,” said former federal prosecutor Mimi Rocah, during an appearance Monday “Morning Joe.” “It is a travesty what Jeffrey Epstein was allowed to get away with, that he sexually abused and raped — himself and allowed others — so many young girls. That is one of the most serious federal crimes I have ever involved in prosecuting. I mean, we are talking about 10, 15, 20 years in prison, and he got a slap on the wrist.”

Brzezinski asked if Acosta, who has resisted calls to resign since his role in the case was highlighted in recent months, personally allowed Epstein to get away with raping and trafficking young girls.

“Yes,” Rocah said, without hesitation.

Despite a mountain of evidence against him, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to lesser charges, serve time in county jail and even spend half days at his office — and Brzezinski asked why Acosta would have agreed to that deal.

“So here’s the question,” Brzezinski said. “What is Alex Acosta’s intention to do this? What would he gain out of letting this guy basically run scot-free after abusing dozens of young girls and also inviting his friends to and letting others — like what is Alex Acosta, what does he have to gain?”

“I mean, he’s made a fool of himself in the law community,” Brzezinski added, “but, even more, he’s let a predator go scot-free. Why? What is behind that? Is he involved? I’ve got to ask. Is he protecting himself?”

Rocah admitted she didn’t know the answer to Brzezinski’s questions.

“There are not indications that he himself,” Rocah said, “that I know of, that he himself, Acosta, was involved, but what there are indications — I mean, if you look at the judge’s opinion they violated the law by not informing, in fact, deliberately concealing from the victims the state plea.”

“What you see, when you read that opinion,” Rocah added, “when you hear the details of how the plea negotiations happened, is that Alex Acosta was very close with attorneys who were representing Epstein. They knew each other from their law firm days. I think, at best, this was a case of sort of an old boys network. They know each other. You know, Alex Acosta had a meeting with one of the defense attorneys privately, away from the U.S. Attorney’s office, in a restaurant. That’s highly unusual and improper in the ongoing case.”

Donald Trump’s increasingly toxic rhetoric against women of color has put the Republican Party in a “vice” of choosing between loyalty to the White House and voters disgusted by the bigotry the president had been broadcasting.

“Donald Trump today has the Republican Party in a vice the likes of which they haven’t experienced since Charlottesville and before that, in the aftermath of the “Access Hollywood” tape,” Wallace explained, citing the biggest moments of Trump displaying his respective racism and misogyny.

“Republicans — who have hardly been profiles in courage — today found just over a dozen of their members break rank and slowly, timidly, begin to call out Donald Trump’s flagrant, bellicose, racist attacks against four female members of Congress,” she reported.

The host explained her editorial decision to not even repeat Trump’s attacks.

“We made a decision on this show not to amplify Trump’s attacks by showing them or even reading them here, but it should surprise no one that they’re false and that they serve as ugly reminders of Donald Trump’s xenophobia, misogyny and racism,” she explained.

Prior to her career in journalism, Wallace was one of the top communications experts in the Republican Party.

“While it’s not news the president is a racist or the Republican Party is largely following his lead, what should serve as a warning to all Democrats is this is the terrain on which the 2020 election will be waged,” she explained. “And anyone who doubts this is central to Trump’s re-election strategy missed the Trump summit with his purveyors of fake news and baseless smears. Last week he praised the social media provocateurs who spread tension to sew racial divisions.’

MSNBC’s Maddow: Trump is freaking out because of what is about to unspool tomorrow morning

President Donald Trump is likely trying to use his recent racist attacks on four Congresswomen of color as a means of distracting from two other significant scandals he’s facing this week, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow said. Both of the scandals will likely “unspool” Thursday morning in the same New York courthouse.

First, beginning at 10:30 a.m. EST, a judge who has been presiding over the campaign finance case in which Michael Cohen was involved, intends to release information involving who else was named in the case. That investigation is pending, and the judge is releasing the sealed documents that were related to the case.

Prosecutors told the judge that they would still like to keep the information under seal because there are additional third-parties involved. The judge in the case denied it, so all of the documents, unredacted, will be released Thursday.

Second, Jeffrey Epstein will appear in court, for his first hearing and the country will find out if he is cooperating with prosecutors.

NBC News released a video Wednesday showing Trump palling around with Epstein and a room full of young women. The men stood in a corner, talking and laughing about the women and how “hot” they were.

Thursday, the world will learn if Epstein was willing to take a bullet for everyone he knows who allegedly joined him in trafficking children. Already Washington, D.C. is bracing for the names that could be released, and it’s possible Trump could be one of them.
