Maddow chides Republicans for avoiding Jared Kushner's self-dealing allegations while attacking Hunter Biden

The final segment of MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Monday evening was about the recent report in the New York Times that Jared Kushner and former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin spent an unusual amount of time in the Persian Gulf over the course of just four years in Trump's office.

Maddow showed photos of the past three secretaries of the U.S. Treasury Department and noted that among the three, which held the positions over Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Collectively, those men went to the Persian Gulf states a total of eight times over ten years. Mnuchin, by contrast, over four years went to the Gulf states at least 18 times, and that doesn't count informal meetings with Gulf state leaders while they were in the U.S.

Both Mnuchin and Kushner, who went to the Middle East fewer than a dozen times, both started investment firms with significant contributions from those same countries. Meanwhile, Kushner made at least three trips to Saudi Arabia during the first year of the Trump administration. One of Kushner’s trips was actually kept secret. Kushner scored $2 billion from the Saudis, even after investors told them it wasn't a good idea.

These trips, among other things, are raising ethics questions about the two gentlemen's self-dealing while working for the White House and on the tax-payer dime. It's unknown the degree to which Kushner and Mnuchin were using their positions in the U.S. government to ensure they have a plan for a post-White House money-making scheme.

Allen Weisselberg drubbed in Manhattan DA filing after trying to scapegoat Michael Cohen for his indictment

These questions surface amid allegations from Republicans that Hunter Biden used his father's name, which he shares, to get a paid position on boards. Hunter Biden, however, has never worked in government, the White House, the Vice President's office, or for his father's U.S. Senate office. Trump welcomed his family into the White House as advisers despite nepotism laws.

Ali Velshi, who was filling in for Lawrence O'Donnell on Monday, told Maddow that cases about Kushner and Mnuchin are difficult to prove.

"The stench thing, you know, there used to be a day when that kind of stuff just led to shame?" Velshi asked. "It certainly kept you out of political life later. But that's not there anymore either. Whether you can prove or not prove quid pro quo, that — absence of the revolving door that you described is compelling."

"Well, the shame issue here, I think is compelling, Ali, because obviously, the Republicans, particularly Trump partisans, are aware that it is shameful to use government service or family connection to government service, to make a private gain for yourself, and have private business gain," said Maddow. "Because they use this as a way to try to attack President Biden's family, for example, all the time. They know that this is something that is shameful and terrible, and that nobody should ever want to do, and they try to pin all sorts of stuff with that kind of a category on all sorts of Democrats. They know it's wrong. But when they do it, they're assuming that if we bring it up, that their shame isn't operable."

"It's a strange phenomenon," Velshi noted.

The first session of the Jan. 6 House Select Committee hearings finally aired on Thursday night and one of the big questions on everyone’s mind was put to rest: Will they flop in prime time?

As the ratings for the cable news networks show, the hearings were a success. MSNBC topped Fox News in terms of total viewers, averaging 3.95 million across prime time.

Fox averaged a total of 2.92 million total viewers for its counter-programming, which is a small boost from the night before, which brought in some 2.58 million total viewers.

CNN, along with MSNBC, beat Fox News in the key 25-54 age demographic. CNN won the night with a big 733,000 demo viewers, while MSNBC had 573,000 and Fox landed in third with 537,000.

CNN also saw its total-viewer average skyrocket as the struggling network brought in 2.62 million total viewers – a major boost from its 517,000 average prime time viewers the night before.

The hearings were also a boon for Fox Business Network, which raked in 223,000 average viewers from 8 to 10 p.m., significantly topping competitor CNBC, which averaged 158,000 during the same hours.

In post-show coverage, Fox’s Jan. 6 hearings coverage anchored by Bret Baier, Martha MacCallum, and Shannon Bream outpaced CNN from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. with 1.3 million total viewers compared to 841,000 for CNN.

MSNBC's Geist rebukes Biden econ policy: 'I promise you' Americans aren't blaming Putin
National Economic Council's Brian Deese insisted that gas prices rose when Russia amassed troops on Ukrainian border

Even MSNBC host isn't buying Biden's excuse for sky-high prices engulfing Americans
During Friday’s episode of MSNBC’s "Morning Joe," co-host Willie Geist pushed back on Biden’s claims that rising prices are due to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Skeptical of Biden’s "Putin’s price hike" talking point, the MSNBC anchor assured show guest Brian Deese, the White House director of the National Economic Council, that the average American pumping gas is not saying, "Damn you, Putin!" but probably blaming leadership.

Geist asked if Deese could relay to those people whether Biden had an actual plan to fix the economic crisis, considering the Department of Labor report, which revealed consumer prices rose 8.6% since this time in 2021. They are now at a 40-year-high.

The back-and-forth between Geist and Deese came after co-host Joe Scarborough pressed the director on whether the Biden administration had any perspective on what the Federal Reserve could be doing to ease inflation.

MSNBC Morning Joe co-anchor Willie Geist presses National Economic Council director Brian Deese on "Putin’s Price Hike" talking point.

"We’re up to 8.6%. That 8.6% could become 10, it could become 12 if the Fed doesn’t start acting aggressively. Does Chairman Powell and the Fed, do they need to jack rates up at a faster clip?" Scarborough asked, though Deese did not give any specifics as to how the White House is handling this.

Deese claimed the White House is giving the Federal Reserve "the space it needs to do everything that it needs to take on inflation" and not getting in the way.

"The president is not going to politicize that process. That is the most important thing that we can do, that a president can do, and we can’t take that for granted," Deese said, adding that former President Donald Trump "was aggressively tweeting at the Federal Reserve chair."

The economic director added that Biden will not be doing what Trump did and explained, "that’s why I’m not going to comment on the question of exactly the tactics they should use other than to say you have a president that says fighting inflation is the top economic priority right now."

MSNBC host asks Biden economic adviser Brian Deese what the president is doing to fight inflation.

Geist wasn’t satisfied with Deese’s stonewalling and expressed that the White House needs to start giving clearer answers on America’s economic woes.

"Brian, it’s true, of course, that Russia’s war in Ukraine is impacting oil prices, yes, but I promise you, the landscaper two days ago I talked to at the gas pump, who was trying to fill up two cans and backpack blowers and mowers in his truck was not going, ‘Damn you, Putin!’" Geist said.

He asked: "So what do you say to him? What do you say to families who can’t afford all their groceries right now?"

Deese insisted that rising prices are Russia’s fault, saying, "it doesn’t make people feel any better, but it is important in diagnosing the problem here, and the problem is that the price of gas at the pump is now up about $1.70 since Putin began amassing troops at the border. That is the impact of war."

MSNBC's Morning Joe hosts asked White House economic adviser Brian Deese about rising inflation. (Consumer prices rising to record levels)

CNBC anchor Jim Cramer criticized Deese following the director’s Friday appearance on "Squawk on the Street." He claimed Deese’s economic numbers "are not true" and expressed that the real reason gas prices are so high is simply because Biden and Democrats "hate fossil fuels" and don’t want to work with oil companies.

‘This is starting to sink in’: Morning Joe says Jan. 6 findings are starting to ‘resonate’ with Trump’s base

    MSNBC

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough was shocked by the results of a new poll showing a majority of Americans -- including one in five Republicans -- think Donald Trump should be prosecuted.

The survey conducted after the first week of public hearings by the House select committee found 58 percent of Americans believe the former president should be charged with a crime for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, and the "Morning Joe" host found the results astonishing.

"You look at the number -- only 19 percent of Republicans, let's stop for a second and think about this," Scarborough said. "In this world of small margins that we play by every election, whether it was 2016 or 2020, let's just stop for a second and go, oh, wow. Only 19 percent of Republicans think he should be charged with a crime and go to jail. That's one in five Republicans."

"Now, I must say, I ran four times and won easily four times," he added. "But if one in five of my base thought I should have been charged with a crime and gone to jail, I mean, I would have gone and practiced law a lot earlier. Again, this is starting to resonate, this is starting to sink in. I just -- we love to knock around Washington institutions. I'm not saying you, but all of us, we love to talk about how ineffective people in Congress or committees are. This committee has gotten the truth out to the American people, and even at the beginning of the summer, they're listening. That's shocking to me."

    Starting to sink in?
You mean the part about the star chamber doing it's damnest to put on a good show for the folks back home?
Of particular interest, was shifty Schiffs answer to the DOJ request for transcripts from the star chamber crew.

Jan. 6 committee says it's cooperating with DOJ request for interview transcripts (nbcnews.com)
"In a letter to the committee this week, senior DOJ officials ramped up pressure on the panel to comply with their request from April for the transcripts, saying the documents are "critical" to its work investigating the riot.

“It is now readily apparent that the interviews the Select Committee conducted are not just potentially relevant to our overall criminal investigations, but are likely relevant to specific prosecutions that have already commenced,” the officials wrote, after Committee Chair Bennie Thomson, D-Miss., expressed reluctance in sharing the transcripts until the panel's investigation is complete.

“Given this overlap, it is critical that the Select Committee provide us with copies of the transcripts of all its witness interviews.”
    And Shifty Schiff's answer?
Angry right-wing protesters confront TX Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw | Watch (msn.com)
Well sure, eventually, when we're done .......
    Really.
Still convinced the January 6 committee is anything but a political circus show?

Think about it. The DOJ/FBI has been investigating January 6 since January 7. They have indicted over 750 of the rioters and done detailed interviews with most of them. They have climbed up the asshole of every conservative within 10 miles of the capital on January 6 and know more about what went on that day, and in the days leading up to January 6, than anyone.

Then along comes Nancy's circus show and they start "interviewing" people. Not the rioters, mind you. Not the planners and plotters. Rather, they go for the President's kids, his advisors, all the political top dogs who, so far as anyone can tell, never got within 100 yards of the capital or had any contact with the leaders of the riot.
A political witch hunt is all it is.

And now, the DOJ, doing it's usual thorough job, is asking the committee for its transcripts. And as shifty Schiff says, "they don't get to just come over here and rifle through our records". Reading between the lines? "We need to make sure there's nothing embarrassing to despicables or our lap dog Rinos before we let them have what we want them to have. Oh, and of course we need the "explosive" release of damning testimony during prime time to, you know, electrify this thing and detract from bidens boondoggles."

You know, like the explosive news that Rep. Loudermilk led a tour of the closed capital the day before the riot so that soon to be rioters could map out and photograph all manner of secret shit. No matter that the capital police pointed out that neither Loudermilk or his entourage ever got near the capital, rather the tour was of office buildings nearby, or that the capital police had reviewed the security tapes and determined nothing unusual went on. No matter, by God, we'll market this and before we're done with it, Loudermilk will be up in the docket with that rascal Trump.

Or the explosive news that now the committee wants to hear from Ginni Thomas, wife of a SCOTUS because, you know, insurrectionist, and of course they are finally getting around to "interviewing" Vice President Pence cause, you know, Trump tried to intimidate him.

Has it occured to anyone on the committee, or in Nancy Antoinette's office, or in shifty Schiff's office, that if they cooperated with the DOJ/FBI they'd get to the bottom of all this much sooner and with much more certainty?

Course, the committee wouldn't have much of a prime time circus to put on, would they? But, they'd have a much better chance of getting their trump perp walk, wouldn't they?

    1. submissively speaking
Seems to me those kids, advisors and top dogs had plenty of relevant information to share. They sure have had a lot to say.

Maybe the DOJ/FBI ought to have looked in those corners, too? Maybe they had an agreement not to overlap? And honoured it until now, when they kinda look like idiots?

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      Who says they haven't?
See, a proper investigation follows the facts and the evidence wherever it leads.
If, say, a j6 rioter says they had orders from the white house then its proper to start askin around the white house, eh?
Now either the FBI/DOJ followed the evidence or it was all a sham. Like Nancy's little show.
Could it be that there is not and never was a connection to the white house? That it was a riot and not an insurrection?

See the problem now? The nancy crew started with assumptions not in evidence (trump led an insurrection) and have not yet talked to the rioters, have they? They wanted Ivanka and don jr. And they want dirt.
And like every other trump investigation, they have shit.

      shootersa, Jun 22, 2022
    3. submissively speaking
Well, I can see why you’d like to believe that to be true; you backed the insurrectionist. It’s awkward.

But the Select Committee indeed has much more than shit, clearly. They’ve got docs and communications and sworn testimony. Trump knew the Big Lie was a scam, he stuck to it despite advice and direction to the contrary. Surely it doesn’t surprise you; he’s a man that has always gone his own way.

Why the DOJ/FBI apparently don’t have the same information is beyond me. Maybe you could ask Merrick the next time you and he are having coffee. My assumption is the DOJ went after the rioters and the Committee went after the planners, but again, that’s just a guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This is actually kind of funny by this point. If Merrick Garland has any sense of urgency we haven;t seen it yet and probably won't until indictments start dropping. But one thing Maddow is right about is the pressure on the DOJ to do something is mounting with every hearing because many things about them seem to be aimed at an audience of one; Merrick Garland.

Maddow: There is new urgency for Merrick Garland to take action against Trump's operation

Judge Merrick Garland testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his nomination to be US Attorney General(AFP)

MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow says Attorney General Merrick Garland is under novel pressure to act quickly against Trump's political operation after bombshell testimony in a hearing by the House Select Committee Investigating the Jan. 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol.

During her closing statement, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) cited two examples of what appeared to be clear attempts at tampering with witnesses set to testify before the select committee.

Following the hearing, legal analysts said there was a compelling case that obstruction of justice was committed.

Maddow reported Cheney, "basically said, through a megaphone, aimed at the Justice Department, 'Hey, look over here. We have evidence that on the Trump side, they have been tampering with witnesses in this investigation, intimidating witnesses in this investigation, and oh, by the way, that's a crime."

"Most of what I know about witness intimidation, I know from the Roger Stone felony trial, where he was convicted on almost all counts, and then later, pardoned by President Trump," Maddow said. "But, what Liz Cheney is describing here, at this evidence that she's bringing forward, from witnesses have come forward from the committee, talking about how they have been intimidated, and pressured, by people close to President tTump, or at least on his behalf, sounds like the kind of testimony that you see at criminal trials, about tampering with witnesses, which is a crime, right? This is what this looks like."

Maddow explained why she thinks this has altered the dynamics.

"And it's worth noting that it's the part of this investigation that isn't about something that happened 17 months ago, right? This is the part of the investigation about something that is happening right now, which requires an immediate response in order to stop the ongoing harm, which is a different kind of pressure on the Justice Department than we've previously seen," Maddow concluded.

All networks have their ex-federal prosecutors or FBI pundits. And if you listen so some of them it would be very naive to think they still don't have friends in the DOJ they talk to. They don't ever say that but many of them and especially Glenn Kirschner always seem to have an edge on the predictions they make because they come true so often.

MSNBC’s Glenn Kirschner Ticks Off 7 Trump Crimes From Casey Hutchinson Bombshells – That Add up to Life in Prison
    By Tommy ChristopherJul 2nd, 2022, 11:51 am
    1018 comments

Former federal prosecutor and current MSNBC legal analyst Glenn Kirschner gave SiriusXM radio host Dean Obeidallah chapter and verse on 7 crimes — adding up to life in prison — that former President Donald Trump is on the hook for after Cassidy Hutchinson‘s blockbuster testimony.

On an episode of The Dean Obeidallah Show this week, the host asked Kirschner to weigh in on Hutchinson’stestimony at Tuesday’s surprise January 6 hearing, and whether it helps support a treason charge. Kirschner was fairly salivating as he read an entire menu of crimes he believes Trump can spend the rest of his life imprisoned for:

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: But now with the new evidence from yesterday, what is your thought on really article three, section three, clause one, treason?

GLENN KIRSCHNER: Yeah, treason is defined in the federal law as whoever, owing an allegiance to the United States, levies war against them, the United States, is guilty of treason. And what Donald Trump was, in a very real sense, levy war. And we now know that his warriors were armed. He knew that. And he launched an attack, that he wanted to lead himself, on the U.S. Capitol, on the Democratic process, on the certification of the rightful win of a president. And that constitutes, in my opinion, levying war against the United States. That constitutes the crime of treason. You know, he certainly is on the hook for obstructing the official proceeding, the certification of Biden’s win. He’s on the hook for a conspiracy to defraud or commit offenses against the United States, inciting a riot, inciting an insurrection, seditious conspiracy, treason. And then if you want to talk about, I think, new charges that are supported by Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, we can talk about things.

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: Well, go through it! Uh!

GLENN KIRSCHNER: The government, a government official, 18 United States Code 111, something that I think is now squarely in play, because if you assault, not only assault, but if you assault, oppose, impede or intimidate a government official while engaged in or on account of the performance of their official duties, like certifying the results of a presidential election. That’s an eight-year felony.

However, if it involves that deadly or dangerous weapon, it’s a 20-year felony. What we now know, what do we now know? Not only did he oppose, impede and intimidate by the tweet, “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what was necessary,” but he intentionally set an armed mob on the Capitol. That makes it a 20-year offense. Again, you can only confine a man for but one life. So how many of these charges you want to stack up? It doesn’t really matter. Donald Trump just needs to be indicted.

    Watch above via SiriusXM.

Despicables keep predicting and promising and threatening.

You'd think after almost 7 years and over 30 federal and state investigations theyd have at least a "lunging conviction.

Heartbreak at MSNBC as Joy Reid's 'ReidOut' Crashes and Burns in Ratings Wars
By Sister Toldjah | Jul 06, 2022 6:45 PM ET

Understandably, there’s been a lot of attention devoted to CNN’s massive ratings decline ever since former President Donald Trump left office in January 2021, especially since the higher-ups there had the not-so-bright idea to think there were people out there who wanted to pay via streaming service what they weren’t even watching on the free side.

But another story of a cable news network’s ratings crumbling is also unfolding.

As we previously reported, since their “star” primetime anchor Rachel Maddow decided to leave for greener pastures outside of the one day a week she now hosts her show on the network, MSNBC has struggled to fill the 9 pm timeslot. As they mulled their options, ratings for Maddow’s time slot tanked as the fill-in anchors they rotated didn’t cut it for their dwindling audience.

Though they’ve found a replacement for Maddow – Alex Wagner, who will start Aug. 16th, MSNBC’s woes continue as Joy Reid is also crashing and burning in the cable news ratings wars:

MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” with host Joy Reid finished the second quarter of 2022 with its smallest audience since the program launched two years ago this month.

    […]

Reid’s program averaged 1.1 million total viewers during the second quarter for its worst turnout since it launched. MSNBC’s 7 p.m. ET program also struggled among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25 to 54, averaging only 122,000 for its lowest quarterly total ever.

    […]

“The ReidOut” started strongly despite her skeletons, averaging nearly two million viewers during the third quarter of 2020, but has lost 46% of its audience since. Viewers from the coveted demo are also fleeing, as “The ReidOut” has lost a whopping 60% of its viewers in the critical category over the same time period; the far-left program managed 308,000 demo viewers in its inaugural quarter.

Reid’s program was not even among the 20 most-watched cable news programs among total viewers or the demo during the second quarter of 2022. Although Reid had trouble attracting viewers, she thrived when it came to generating headlines.

As examples of Reid’s flameout, check out where she ranked in the coveted demo for Thursday (41) and Friday (34) nights last week: https://twitter.com/RoadMN/status/1...out-crashes-and-burns-in-ratings-wars-n589991

That’s absolutely pathetic, but then again so is Joy Reid.

Reid has undoubtedly emerged as one of the most toxic voices on cable news since she took over Chris Matthews’ 7 pm timeslot. She’s bizarrely suggested that conservatives look for ways to drink COVID “in a Kool-Aid cup,” and has repeatedly referred to prominent black conservatives as “Uncle Toms.” She’s also suggested that gun laws are based on white supremacy and once laughably tried to portray Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears (R), who is black, as a puppet for white supremacists.

Perhaps most infamously, Reid came under fire in late 2017/early 2018 when she claimed she was “hacked” after posts from her old blog were dug up and found to contain what LGBTQ rights activists said were “bigoted” and “homophobic” remarks.

MSNBC stood by her at the time, but if rumors of her on-air days being numbered are true, it sounds like the higher-ups there might have just about reached their limit with her.

    1 MILLION viewers?
    Huh.
The Nancy Antoinette January 6 prime time circus, according to reports, got 11 MILLION viewers and it got (temporarily) canceled because of low ratings. But now the star chamber minions found some more clowns and they're gonna try again.

Maybe Reid could find some new clowns for her show ...............
    Al Sharpton perhaps?
    Rosie O'Donnell?
    Wait!! Got it!!
    They could get Geraldo Rivera!!
    A match made in heaven!!!
    :)

You are just making that up. The ratings for all the J6 committee hearings have been really high. Pulling in more than 10 million viewers during the day. And more than 13 million watched Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony.

Oh, so you're now saying 11 or 13 MILLION viewers makes for high ratings?

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle Says Media Should Report ‘Good News’: Gas Prices ‘Going Down,’ Companies ‘Are Hiring Hiring And Hiring!’
    By Tommy ChristopherJul 9th, 2022, 11:36 am
    1414 comments

MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle said the media is missing the “good news” in the economy, namely declining gas prices and the fact that “Businesses are hiring, hiring, and hiring!”

Ruhle was a guest on Friday’s edition of MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson Reports to discuss the June jobs report that showed 372,000 jobs created in June — tens of thousands more than expected — while unemployment rate remained at 3.6%, meeting expectations.

STEPHANIE RUHLE: The real positive to take away is when you start to raise rates, the fear is businesses are going to lay people off. They can’t grow. Well, that’s not the case. Businesses are hiring, hiring, and hiring!

HALLIE JACKSON: What’s a piece of this, Steph, as this story and these jobs numbers been covered throughout the day today, that you think is missing from the broader conversation? Like what’s the angle that we’re not talking about that we should be?

STEPHANIE RUHLE: Well, the fact that this is good news, right? It’s easy to say, look at gas prices, they’re so high. But guess what? Look closer at gas prices.

HALLIE JACKSON: That’s right. I was just going to ask you about that.

STEPHANIE RUHLE: …sort of find the sort of… Gas prices are actually going down. And to simply say, “What is the administration doing? This is a huge problem!”

You have to remember, when you look at the economy, all of this was caused by COVID. And yes, we are getting through COVID, but you’ve still got supply chain issues because of China. Nobody predicted the war and that’s caused food prices to go up, lumber prices to go up, gas prices to go up.

The good news that I want everyone to take away is, yes, this is a complicated time. Things are expensive, but all of this is part of a broader theme, which is economic recovery. And I would want to remind people of where we were two years ago, potentially facing economic disaster.

That was another lie of conservatism that was on just glaring display. They try to claim the support law enforcement and law and order but Back The Blue actually means only when they are busting the heads and/or killing Black and Brown people. But if law enforcement tries to stop an armed insurrection and attempted coup at the Capitol they are traitors. Treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans back law enforcement the same way the support our troops and veterans. Which is only when it suits their political purposes when all the rest of the time they consider them suckers and losers.

‘Republicans Hate Cops!’ Joe Scarborough Goes OFF on Trump and GOP ‘Enablers’ Over Jan 6th Denial
    By Colby HallJul 11th, 2022, 8:29 am
    764 comments

Joe Scarborough delivered the sort of well-reasoned and passionate harangue that viewers tune into Morning Joe for, especially like this one that targeted former President Donald Trump and his GOP enablers who have ostensibly turned into January 6th denialists for craven political reasons.

The segment opened with Mika Brzezinksi sharing a New York Times op-ed from Sunday written by current Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell entitled “I was betrayed by Donald Trump.” Pegged to the stunning testimony of former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson, Gonell explains how disappointed he is with the former president, writing:

I don’t know what part of Ms. Hutchinson’s testimony enraged me most: that Mr. Trump wanted to be driven to the Capitol to lead the vicious riot, that he’d spurred his supporters on knowing they were armed, or that he ignored some of his advisers and even his daughter who told him to call it off, allegedly fighting with his own Secret Service agent after he refused to let the president be driven there.

Or maybe it was the fact that Mr. Trump eventually told the rioters who’d criminally assaulted my colleagues and me while trying to bring down the U.S. government: “Go home. We love you. You are very special.”

“It has to be so galling after these people were running around, these Republicans were running around for a year saying, ‘Blue lives matter, and we love cops. Democrats want to de-fund the police and don’t love cops,'” Scarborough reacted. “Despite every democratic leader said de-funding the cops was a stupid thing. Republicans, when push comes to shove, really don’t give a damn about cops. Blue lives matter? No, not if they’re getting the hell beaten out of them and sprayed with bear spray.”

“These Republicans see — Donald Trump and the trump Republican party see police officers getting the hell beaten out of them,” he continued, “Donald Trump says, the crowd that was beating the hell out of these police officers, beating them to a pulp, beating them to within an inch of their lives, beating them so badly and putting them through things that some committed suicides, and most police officers that were there blame these riots for the death of several officers, what do they do? Donald Trump calls them patriots, says they’re very smart.”

“Why do Republicans hate police officers?”
Scarborough ultimately asked. “Why won’t Republicans stand up for police officers and stand up for cops when they’re getting the hell beaten out of them? In Congress, they love yapping about how they support the blue when they go on the house floor, but when police officers are getting eviscerated, getting brutalized, when they’re getting beaten to death, suddenly, they love the rioters. They love the thugs. They love the people that are beating them up and beating them to death.”

Gonnell explained in his piece that he is no longer able to serve on duty as a result of injuries he sustained on January 6th, writing:

The physical and emotional damage I sustained on Jan. 6 not only cut short my career, it has upended my life. Five of my colleagues in law enforcement died and more than 850 rioters were arrested. So many families have been ruined because of one man’s lust for power.

Even more galling are the Republicans who still refuse to provide testimony under oath and instead dangerously downplay how close we came to losing our democracy. I applaud the courage of the witnesses who’ve come forward to tell the truth. I know from personal experience — I have given testimony several times about that day to Congress, to the F.B.I. and in court — how distressing it can be. I just wish we all had been able to testify sooner, right after Jan. 6, when we might have had more impact.

The enabling of Mr. Trump needs to stop now. He should not only be banned from running for any other government office, he should never be allowed near the White House again. I believe he betrayed his oath to defend the Constitution, and it was to the detriment of me, my colleagues and all Americans, whom he was supposed to protect.

This is why Scarborough, and so many patriotic Americans, are so angry with the former president and apparent Republican hypocrisy over “backing the blue.”
