This should probably be on the "how they spend our tax money thread, but we'll just leave this one here.
    Because of the irony.
You see, in San Francisco there's this federal building.
And recently they renamed the building the "Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building" to, you know, honor the old biddy.
But anyone who has been to San Francisco in the last decade knows that it has literally been turned into a shithole by the despicables.
    Shit on the streets.
Homeless encampments on major downtown streets.
    Rampant crime.
To the point that Joni Ernst, junior senator from Iowa, thinks they ought to close down the building cause, you know, hazardous to Federal employees to even go near the place.
    Now, that, that's irony.
But we also noted that changing the name of the building, well, it cost us taxpayers $65 MILLION.
    Really.
    $65,000,000 ($65 MILLION).

To change the name of a building.
It seems anything that even remotely touches the government instantly gets beyond stupid expensive, doesn't get the job we need done, you know, done, and in some way fucks things up worse.

GOP Senator Ernst Calls for Nancy Pelosi Federal Building to Be Shut Down (msn.com)

    The Western Journal
GOP Senator Ernst Calls for Nancy Pelosi Federal Building to Be Shut Down
Story by Warner Todd Huston • 18h

Republican U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst is calling for the government to shut down San Francisco’s main federal office building -- which was recently renamed after ex-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi -- because of the dangerous conditions around the building.

Ernst said that the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building in San Francisco is a "threat to public safety,' the New York Post reported.

The Iowa Republican's call to shutter the building comes after months of warnings issued by building staff and department heads for government employees to work from home and not travel to the building because the streets around the facility are so unsafe.

The warnings to workers first surfaced in reports in August, when the Department of Health and Human Services told employees to stay home where it is safe.

Employees were formally advised in an Aug. 4 memo to stay away from the building because of the crime in the streets surrounding the facility, the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Aug. 11.

With the reports echoing across Washington D.C., the 53-year-old Ernst said that employees should be relocated to other government office locations where employees won't be "fearing for their lives" just for going to work.

"Working at a Department of Health and Human Services building shouldn’t be a risk to your health or life, but it is now due to former Speaker Pelosi and the other liberal politicians that have allowed criminal chaos to overtake the streets of San Francisco," Ernst told the Post.

"If it’s not safe for federal employees to work here, it certainly can’t be safe for businesses to operate and families to live here," she exclaimed. "I’m calling to shut down the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building. After all, they’ve already been forced to abandon it, so why should taxpayers keep the lights on in Nancy Pelosi’s haunted house?"

The building, renamed for one of the most divisive House Speakers in recent years, opened as a government office in 2007 and houses Pelosi's local office as well as offices of Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, and the Department of Transportation.

But San Francisco has been quickly devolving into a hellscape of open drug sales/use, homelessness, a rising murder rate crime, retail theft, car vandalism and carjacking, not to mention being strewn with human feces and garbage.

In her official letter to Robin Carnahan, the administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration, Ernst called the downtown area "dangerous."

"The plaza is a dangerous, open-air drug market, with addicts shooting up, snorting, and smoking drugs in plain view," Ernst wrote. "Drug users pass out on the public benches and used needles litter the ground. Overdosing is 'a commonplace horror,' with nearly 150 suspected overdoses— including more than 30 deaths—on the block surrounding the Federal Building reported in the first half of this year. Dozens of dealers show up daily, one of which opened fire with a gun near the building recently. While fencing has been put up, addicts and dealers still hang out around the plaza."

"According to its designer, the building was set up to represent 'the way government should be and how the workplace should be.' Ironically, the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building is instead a symbol of the way government doesn’t work, with offices and workplaces largely empty due to drug and crime problems resulting from the misguided policies of the state and city governments," Ernst added.

"Federal employees report having knives pulled on them and one was chased with a hammer. Working at a Department of Health and Human Services building shouldn’t be a risk to someone’s health, or life!" she added.

"It’s extremely concerning that the city’s inability to control crime is endangering civil servants, children, and visitors," the senator said.

Ernst noted that there are five other government office buildings in the city where workers could be distributed to have a safe work environment and she wants the GSA to provide data on how many workers need to use the Pelosi building and how they could be reassigned office space elsewhere.

The dangerous location was only recently renamed for Pelosi. The homage to the former Speaker was a nice little provision tucked away on page 610 of a spending bill that provided funds to have signs changed to add Pelosi's name to the building.

The name change was coupled with a similar provision for Sen. Patrick Leahy, which cost the American taxpayer $65 million and was hidden in the 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion omnibus bill passed in 2022.

‘We Must All Watch’: MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan Shares Harrowing CNN Visit To Israeli Morgue Showing Hamas’s ‘Brutality’
    Jamie FreveleOct 31st, 2023, 2:32 pm

Warning: above video contains graphic footage.

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan has received criticism for his position on Israel’s response to the Hamas terror attacks on October 7, but issued his own sharp condemnation of the brutality of Hamas in a tweet he posted on Monday.

In a show of journalistic solidarity, Hasan shared a CNN segment led by anchor Sara Sidner about how Israel is managing the dead with a makeshift morgue and changes to burial laws. (You can watch that video above; be aware it contains graphic footage that might be difficult to watch.) In the tweet, Hasan says, “This is hard to watch, but we must all watch, as far too many people… have weirdly & cruelly decided that opposing Israel’s war in Gaza requires them to try & deny the sheer scale of Hamas brutality on Oct 7th. It doesn’t.”

The segment above was on Monday’s edition of The Lead with Jake Tapper. Hasan also shared CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins’ account of being shown footage from the October 7 massacre with an excerpt:

The scenes include a Hamas fighter standing on a dead man and continuing to fire into the body at close range. They show Hamas members arguing over who gets to attempt to decapitate a Thai laborer with a garden hoe.

That Hasan is sharing CNN’s reporting is notable, but he’s also showing that he views the October 7 attack by Hamas as “brutal” and that no one should ignore it, even while they criticize Israeli leaders and their military response on Gaza. The latter is something that some of MSNBC’s hosts — including Hasan — have been called on, including by NewsNation anchor and Mediaite owner Dan Abrams, for focusing their critiques solely in Israel’s direction.

'Utter failure' of Trump defense strategy leaves his company 'at an end': MSNBC analyst

    Tom Boggioni
    November 7, 2023 8:36AM ET

During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance made the case that, if Donald Trump's attorneys thought letting their client rant and rave in Judge Arthur Engoron's courtroom on Monday was an effective defense strategy, they were sorely mistaken.

Speaking with MSNBC host Jonathan Lemire, the former prosecutor predicted the penalty the former president and his family will pay will be the dissolution of the Trump Organization in the $250 million financial fraud trial.

With Lemire noting that both Trump and his lawyers spent a great part of the day provoking Judge Engoron, he then asked, "What's your take on that strategy, and do you think it can be effective for the former president?"

"If that was the strategy, Jonathan, it was an utter failure," she quickly answered before adding, "and here's why."

"As you all have been discussing, this is a bench trial, where the judge sits in for the jury. If there was a jury in the box, the judge would have been forced to restrict Trump's answers; he would have directed Trump as a witness to answer the question. He would have been moving to strike any of these extraneous comments Trump continued to make which weren't admissible and which were prejudicial," she explained.

She then elaborated, "If you are Trump's lawyers, sitting at the counsel table, you are watching your only hope of surviving this case — which is the appeal — you're watching it fade away."

"The Trump Organization is liable," she asserted. "In essence, the Trump Organization as a business will be shuttered. They will remove its certificate to operate."

"On appeal, they would have argued, Trump's lawyers, that that decision by the judge was misplaced; he shouldn't have found fraud as a matter of law," she continued. Yesterday, because the judge let Donald Trump ramble, Donald Trump conceded that point. That means that this decision should survive appeal, and the Trump Organization, as Trump has operated it for all these years is at an end."

Joe Scarborough Gleefully Adds 2023 Results to the GOP’s Losing Streak Under Trump: ‘The Political Heroin of Losing’
    Ken MeyerNov 8th, 2023, 7:43 am

Joe Scarborough tore into Donald Trump’s “culture of winning” within the Republican Party by mocking the losses they observed in Tuesday night’s off-year elections.

Democratic Governor Andy Beshear defeated Republican challenger Daniel Cameron to win re-election in Kentucky last night, and Democrats gained ground politically in Ohio and Virginia as well. When Morning Joe started on Wednesday with the Kentucky results, Scarborough marked this as the continuation of disappointing election outcomes the Republican Party has seen for the past few years.

“You look at these primary voters; they don’t really care!” Scarborough exclaimed. “It’s like Donald Trump is the political heroin of losing. You just take a shot of 2016, and you just lie back and smile while your party loses in 2017, ’18, ’19, ’20, 21, ’22, and ’23. And you’re coming back for more in 2024.”

The conversation on Morning Joe continued with a focus on the indicators that the results were driven by public discontent from the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Scarborough used this point to dismiss Democrats’ fears about President Joe Biden’s political chances in light of recent negative polling.

“The political ramifications just keep coming!” Said Scarborough. “Whether it’s in Kansas, whether it’s in Kentucky, whether it’s in Wisconsin. You name it. Everywhere abortion, the rights of women to make health care choices, keep winning in state after state, election after election. At this point, you’d think Republicans would get it. But they don’t.”

MSNBC Reporter Says Ivanka Testimony Shows Trump ‘Literally’ Borrowed Money ‘From His Kids’ Piggy Banks!’
    Jennifer Bowers BahneyNov 8th, 2023, 4:17 pmW

MSNBC reporter Lisa Rubin said her “jaw almost dropped” when she realized Ivanka Trump’s testimony provided “proof” that Donald Trump “was robbing Peter to Pay Paul.”

Ivanka Trump testified Wednesday in the $250 million civil fraud case against her father. Donald Trump’s adult sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump recently testified that they never knew details of the Trump Organization’s accounting practices. Both sons have also been charged in the case.

“At the very end of her direct, they elicited some information that also made my jaw drop, and it’s this: Donald Trump, as part of his lending agreements with Deutsche Bank promised them a number of things. One of them is that he guaranteed that he could repay the principal and the income and the operating expenses of whatever asset he was borrowing for. And that’s a big guarantee,” Rubin said, continuing:

What we learned today is that behind the scenes, Donald Trump entered into an agreement with each of his three adult children, whereby they pledged assets of their own to help him satisfy the guarantee, which, according to his contract with Deutsche Bank, was supposed to be his and his alone.

He was literally borrowing money from his kids’ piggy banks to satisfy Deutsche Bank that he had enough money to borrow from them what he had. And I’m not sure the impact of that struck everyone in the courtroom, but like I said, my jaw almost dropped. I almost dropped my phone on the floor. I was just astonished by the proof that Donald Trump was robbing Peter to pay Paul, so to speak.

While on the stand, Ivanka Trump repeatedly claimed she “didn’t recall” when questioned by the prosecution.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has vowed to prove that Ivanka Trump personally benefitted from the Trump Organization’s fraudulent business practices, even though the former first daughter has not been charged in the case.

I thought I already cleared up that spam. Trump is not being accused of borrowing money from his adult children. Trump fraudulently inflated the values of his properties to secure a lower interest loan. But since he had to maintain at least $2.5 billion he still didn't have enough. So he got his adult kids to throw in some of their assets. And then Trump signed a document stating all the property values were true and correct. And he and he alone owned all the properties securing the loan. Which is fraud. In writing.

    And now back on topic.

This is pretty interesting and I am not sure Rachel Maddow is right. But something caused a pretty big Pope shake up.

Maddow reveals the likeliest reason the Pope fired this ultraconservative bishop

    Matthew Chapman

Pope Francis greets the crowd as he arrives for his general audience at St Peter's Square in the Vatican, on June 17, 2015 (AFP)

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow reported on Monday about Pope Francis' decision to fire Joseph Strickland, a far-right Texas bishop who spent months attacking him as illegitimate — and suggested that there might be another reason, beyond his public insubordination, that the Vatican might want to be rid of him.

"You might remember that just before the January 6th attack on Congress, like three weeks before that, in mid-Dec. 2020, there was another day of crazy right-wing pro-Trump violence in the streets of Washington, D.C.," said Maddow. "Dec. 12, 2020. A number of people were stabbed. There were brawls in the streets of Washington, running, fistfights and battles. This was the day when a Black Lives Matter banner was stolen and burned from a D.C. church ... The largest event pro-Trump forces had organized was something called the Jericho March. This was a Mike Flynn thing, where Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the pro-Trump right-wing paramilitary group the Oath Keepers, who is now in jail on sedition charges — this is where Stewart Rhodes, at this event, called for Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act to use the military in American streets to keep Trump in power."

It was violence and radicalism were the warm-up for the Jan. 6 attack, she explained.

"And that event, the Jericho March, the headline event of that day, included an address, a speech from a sitting Catholic bishop, from Bishop Joseph Strickland from the Diocese of Tyler, Texas," Maddow continued. "A serving bishop speaking at an event that was calling for the overthrow of the U.S. government, calling for the overthrow of the U.S. election results, including by the use of the Army, the U.S. military against U.S. citizens on U.S. soil."

This extremism is not even unique within certain factions of the Catholic Church, Maddow noted. "Among ultra-right Catholic priests right now, things have been kind of bananas," she continued. "We have got, for example, one ultra-right priest in the state of Wisconsin calling for Pope Francis to be assassinated. Calling for the Pope to be murdered."

Moreover, there are historical analogs, she continued, including the infamous "Radio Priest" Father Charles Coughlin, who built up a nationwide following in the 1930s and grew more radical.

"By 1936, he was telling listeners when the ballot became useless in the United States, he would urge them to use bullets instead," said Maddow, recalling a Catholic leader she brings up in her podcast "Ultra," recently published as a book. "He openly endorsed what he called 'the road of fascism.' By 1938, Coughlin was defending pogroms and Nazi mass violence against Jewish people in Germany. By 1939, he was depicting Jews as a life-sucking octopus strangling the United States. By 1941, he was cheering on Nazi military victories in Europe, saying the end result would be that Hitler would create, 'a United States of Europe,' which he said would 'appeal to Americans despite all the propaganda aimed at disparaging it.' So, therefore, Americans should root for Hitler to win."

Eventually, Maddow noted, the Catholic Church demoted him, deciding he was "too much against their values" — and evidently, they've made a similar decision with the bishop in Texas.

In an interview, Strickland said that he was being removed because he challenged "the powers that be."

Joy Reid was right then and she's right now. It was mostly the rural states and counties that backed Trump;s attempted coup- and are still screaming the election was stolen. And they are still backing Trump as he stands and says he intends to be a Hitler like dictator if he becomes president again. It is mostly rural areas that do not believe in democracy and refuse to live under the Constitution.

Joy Reid Sinks Her Teeth Into Stephen Miller With Biting New Nickname
    Lee Moran
Tue, November 14, 2023 at 1:17 AM MST·1 min read

MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Monday took a bite out of ex-Trump White House policy adviser Stephen Miller as “one of the chief architects” of former President Donald Trump’s reported plans to curb immigration to America with mass deportations and holding camps if he returns to the White House.

“Much of what Donald Trump wants in a second term is no secret at all,” said Reid, noting how “the Project 2025 collection of policy proposals to give him all sorts of dictatorial powers has been in the works for years now, with the help of the Heritage Foundation.”

Miller is a key figure behind the project, Reid pointed out.

The anchor then described Miller as “the white nationalist Dracula” who was behind “draconian and cruel Trump immigration policies like the Muslim ban and separating immigrant children from their families and putting them in cages.”

“That Stephen Miller,” she added, “has even more disgusting, racist immigration plans for a second Trump term.”

Miller drew condemnation during the Trump presidency for his hardline anti-immigration stance. MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan ripped Miller as “probably the most repugnant individual to serve” in the Trump White House.

Rachel Maddow’s Unfiltered Reaction To Mike Johnson News Says It All
    Lee Moran
Updated Wed, November 15, 2023 at 5:44 AM MST·2 min read
    1.3k

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow removed her glasses and held her head when she learned during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Tuesday that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had secured a government funding bill to avoid a shutdown but only with the help of Democrats which drew ire from far-right members of his party.

“I’m sure Mr. Johnson is very smart and capable and knows exactly what he’s doing,” Maddow sarcastically commented. “But he got this job because the previous guy [California Rep. Kevin McCarthy] was driven out with pitchforks and torches for having had the temerity to speak to political opponents rather than wishing them dead, and now he [Johnson] needs his political opponents in order to keep his job.”

“We all know how this ends,” Maddow added, signaling Johnson’s time in the leadership position could now be under serious threat.

The GOP is “not a party that is trying to govern” and is in thrall to former President Donald Trump and his anti-democratic tendencies, said Maddow.

Democrats “are still treating this like it is a governing project” when “the two parties are doing two very different things,” she added.

“Now we are going to keep the government open. It is because the Democrats came to the rescue and said that we should,” Maddow explained. “But this is the Republican Party still not even wanting to keep the government going because they don’t believe that governance is what we need in this country; they believe we want a strongman form of government under a guy who just says what he wants, and it happens.”

She summarized, “The stakes are really high right now, and it’s just depressing to see what’s happening in Congress.”

Colbert asked, “How do we get out of this mess?”

Maddow said, “The big picture answer is if you are trying to defend democracy, you only have one arrow in your quiver, you only have one weapon and that is democracy. You cannot fight an anti-democratic movement with anti-democratic means.”

She continued, “You have to treat your fellow Americans like human beings. You have to fight against scapegoating and toxic conspiracy theories that are trying to make you think that your fellow Americans are not worthy of participating in a democracy with you. You need to beat people at the polling place, and you need to make sure the public knows the truth about this stuff” and “not be scared of people who are trying to use violence to intimidate us out of this process.”

Maddow concluded, “It’s small ‘d’ democratic commitment, and we need it more than we’ve ever needed it this year.”

Joe Scarborough Goes OFF on Mike Johnson’s ‘Depraved’ America Claim: ‘Why Do Republicans Hate America So Much?’
    Jamie FreveleNov 17th, 2023, 8:06 am

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough had a lot to say on Friday about the leaked video of Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) in which the second in line to the presidency of the United States called America “so dark and depraved that it almost seems irredeemable at this point.” Among the questions he asked of his Morning Joe guests was, “Why do Republicans hate America so much?”

Rolling Stone’s Tim Dickinson covered the leaked Zoom call that Johnson was on, which took place on October 4 before he was elected Speaker of the House. It was described as a “prayer call” with Christian nationalist preacher Jim Garlow, and Johnson went into great detail about why the country he represents in Congress was “in a time of judgment” as “the faith in our institutions is its lowest it’s ever been in the history of our nation.” This led both co-host Willie Geist and Scarborough to start railing against Johnson, who was a major player in perpetuating lies about the 2020 election:

Geist: Where to begin there, Joe. There’s so much. America is “irredeemable,” it’s “dark and depraved.” Just to, let’s lift ourselves out of the subtext. He went on to say, really what he’s talking about here is that we have gay people in America. He said one in four high school students say that they are “something other than straight” is the way he put it. So he’s very worried about that.

But also, I just have to say, Joe, he said the faith in our institutions and doubt about absolute truth. This is the man who helped to lead the attempted coup against the United States government and overturn the 2020 election. He’s very worried about faith in institutions.

Scarborough: Willie, he ran the Big Lie on Capitol Hill! Preach about that, Jimmy Swaggart! Right? And then go to your motel room and start like, faxing around, you know, conspiratorial documents. It is, it is the hypocrisy. … There’s so much hypocrisy to go to here about a guy, again, trying to undermine our institutions. The guy who is trying, who led in the House of Representatives, the attempt to undermine the United States Constitution, an American presidential election, and an attempt to basically end American democracy.

And then suddenly, suddenly, this great prophet, this Jeremiah of our times, went quietly silent, as mobs rushed the People’s House where he was, and battered and abused police officers with American flags. That our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen took into battle over 200 years to defend this country. The hypocrisy, the hypocrisy, in the words of, I think it was Homer Simpson when somebody accidentally threw communion water in his eyes, “It burns! It burns!”

But Scarborough’s sarcastic rant didn’t end there. Johnson’s dire picture of America had him asking the question:

I just have to go back to the question I asked yesterday. I’m serious. Why do Republicans hate America so much? … I’m very optimistic about America’s future because I see the good in people. I see the good in this country. It’s interesting. He’s he’s like trying to dig statistics about, I don’t know, drag queen shows or something. …

But I’ve got to say, if he’s worried about pews emptying out, talk to young people and so many will tell you, and Russell Moore’s talked about this with Christianity Today, they’re emptying out because they don’t want to go to a church where preachers worship Donald Trump instead of Jesus Christ.
