First you will forgive me if I wander off topic during my post, it's just this thing I do. Additionally, my English may not be easily understandable - I don't speak it natively but I've been working on it.

I am a part of 16-30ers you mention in your topic. I have facebook (don't really have the patience to visit it often) I don't own a smartphone (never felt the need though my next mobile phone probably will be one, considering in 1 or 2 years it will be hard to find one that isn't). I grew up on television and in the Internet, and my parents never hold me back from any of these things. I am an investigator at my university and I am pretty inside the world of how science is produced this days, and I use produced with sadness. We have excellent scientist today. When you look at it from a superficial point of view,it may not seem so - no livings Einsteins seem to exist anymore - but the current generation of scientists grew up learning things using the internet, which is by nature a collaborative experience - Wikipedia, for all its successes and failures is a good example of it. Einstein most certainly didn't work alone - but he was one of the last few scientist to be able to make significant breakthroughs with the help of only a small team.

Nowadays people do scientist work on subjects that have economic potential, whether they are passionate about them or not. We work as huge teams of significantly specialized individuals - the complexity of the work at hand requires it, and additionally a 50 man team produces "science" at a much faster speed than a single man can. Einstein himself spent the last days of his life looking for a final breakthrough - which he never really accomplished.

Having promptly available information in the form of the Internet was a huge help for me - sure, when I was older I'd have to consult specialized bibliography and spent much of those days at a library, but if I could find what I needed online I would.

The real problem today, and you can see it both looking at science and at arts was that nowadays whatever a scientist or artist create has to be profitable. Galileo's first dicoveries really weren't - and his life wasn't made any easier because of them. During the Renaissance, rich people would finance the great artist of that generation to produce some of the most wonderful pieces of art humanity has ever seen - because they saw value in it, and to finance such masterworks brought glory with it.

Nowadays glory lies in the production of more money - pop artists being a prime example of this - their successes and failures are measured in how much of a profit they turned in. Great pop music is still being created - artists who will be as highly rewarded s the likes of Mozart are now. It is just a shame some of them have to live in poverty and not getting the acknowledgement they deserve for their talent - just as Mozart lived. Have we learned nothing?
