Makes one wonder, doesn't it? The service interruption is supposedly necessitated by some kind of server/bandwidth upgrade. Yet, all the bandwidth intensive services - images, videos, streams, the story server - are all still up. The only thing that is down at this point is the voting and comments: the very same features that we, the writers, raised a collective stink about a few weeks ago... hmmm. Yes, it does make one wonder whether, just possibly, we cooked our own goose.

I, for one, miss the comments. I enjoy replying to them. Not many people read my novel - it is buried here and nearly impossible to find through the search system - but 99.9% of the people who bother have nothing but good to say, and the remaining 0.1% offer constructive feedback.

Ahh, well. I've tried to get banned here, to no avail. Maybe, if the comments are not restored, my time here will end not with a bang, but with a whimper.

A.P. It does seem suspicious! Although, it is very likely the stories are on a different server, the voting and commenting don't seem like they would be the tipping factor that would stop the server from working properly? But, I really don't know anything about the actual facts here.

I'll make a confession though, as a system administrator, I have lied to my users, rather than explain the actual facts.:twisted: Sometimes a necessary evil.

 

I would like to see the newest releases listed by date, not rating. That way everyone's story gets to be on the front page. We all know if it's not there, it'll be buried and never read.

Has anyone responded to a date when this will all be fixed?

 

Last word was that Lemark hoped tomorrow. He said that Thursday, so that would have been Friday.
I'm guessing they are off on the weekend. Maybe Monday?

I'm holding all stories until I know it's up and cleared of all the chaos.

You are absolutely right, and likewise for myself. I don't know the facts either, and apologies to the administrators if my speculations sound like a criticism.

 

I sent LemarkXxX a pm asking if they had any idea as to when voting and commenting will resume.

Rule one in system support, don't leave the users in the dark, even if you have to make something up, so they don't plan a mutiny.

 

Hey, writers bring people here just as the photo thread people and video uploaders do. But who are we to ask for something to go on, right?

 

Maybe he is busy reading stories and hasnt gotten a chance to work out these issues? That or they are out of his control and he is waiting for someone else to fix it until he posts a reply:???:

 

I could very well be wrong, and I'd be thrilled to have Lemark come back and tell me I'm wrong, but I smell a pile of wrong.

Maybe a vacation was needed and the constant problems the story site was experiencing made that impossible. So, stop the voting and commenting and the thing runs unattended until the vacation is over.

Holy hell people!! I wasn't going to say anything, but I think I'm going to have to!!

While I can see an annoyance in the site not working properly, it's hardly the be all and end all of life as we know it hunh? We don't know how many people are working with Lemark on this, or how much of his time he can dedicate to the site (for all we know, and I suspect, he works voluntarily with little or no support staff to help out!!)

Just chill out a bit - it's Christmas, go drink some eggnog with your nearest and dearest, get into the pre-Christmas store-crush and spend money you can't afford!!

Does it matter how many people have read the stories? Are we really that concerned on how many (or few) comments the stories have received, be they good, bad or indifferent?

Hey, perhaps Lemark has his own 'real life Christmas events' he's got to take care of!!

Dear LemarkXxx:

This is not another rant about the counters, voting, and comments. The holidays are upon us, and being the sort of person who happens to know more than a little about what is involved in those feature upgrades, I would be very surprised if you have those systems back up before New Years. I, myself, will be doing more ice climbing than writing over the next couple weeks, and I will be very cross with you if you spend the holidays in front a computer screen, young man!

However I do have a related reminder. At one point, on one of these systems-related threads (maybe this one), you mentioned that with the upgrade of the systems, writers would be able to edit their own stories (and yes, delete them, too).

I am no longer looking to delete my stories. I've even removed "delete account requested" from my profile! But, I really am looking forward to the ability to edit stories. (One of the chapters in my book has a nasty formatting error that has turned it all into italics, and I would love to be able to go in and fix it without bugging you about it). I am sure this ability would be important to many other writers as well.

I am not looking for a timeline, or a delivery date, or any commitments in writing. All I ask is that you keep the story editing feature on your radar.

Absolutely. It's Christmas time. Let's show a little Christian charity (and by that I do not mean to insult any Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Wiccans, Atheists, Zoroastrians, Satan Worshippers, or Jedi on the forums) and give the site admins the benefit of the doubt. They're probably on vacation right now. I'm sure all will be fixed soon enough.

It makes the site better than others I have been on. I would have just turned off the whole posting process if it was me. But, then when it came back there would be tons of stories backed up.
