On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a well-planned surprise attack on Israel, which then scrambled to marshall its forces to fight on two fronts - the Sinai and the Golan Heights in the North, where the Israelis defeated a much larger Syrian tank force. In the end, Israel kept the Golan Heights. It is known as both The October War and The Yom Kippur War, because it occurred on that Jewish holy day.

Egyptian combat engineers had ingeniously utilized water cannons to rapidly clear numerous passages through the sand wall lining the eastern bank of the Suez Canal, simultaneously laying bridges and operating ferries that allowed armoured vehicles to cross.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) quickly turned the tide, disabling portions of the Egyptian air defenses, which allowed Israeli forces commanded by General Ariel Sharon to cross the Suez Canal and surround the Egyptian Third Army. On the Golan front, Israeli troops, at heavy cost, repulsed the Syrians and advanced to the edge of the Golan plateau on the road to Damascus.

On October 22 the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 338, which called for an immediate end to the fighting; despite this, however, hostilities continued for several days thereafter, prompting the UN to reiterate the call for a cease-fire with Resolutions 339 and 340. With international pressure mounting, the war finally ceased on October 26.

Yeah, the fucking UN always demands a cease fire when Israel is busy defending itself from unprovoked attacks.

On October 7, 1996, the conservative Fox News Network premiered on U.S. satellite and cable television.

News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch started the network, hired Roger Ailes to run it, and within five years, it had eclipsed rival CNN in the ratings and went on to become the number one ranked cable news network for over a decade.

In a news and cable landscape dominated by liberal outlets, Fox develpoed a unique tactic: to accelerate its adoption by cable providers, Fox News paid systems up to $11 per subscriber to distribute the channel, which contrasted with the normal practice, in which cable operators paid stations carriage fees for programming.

The first hosts of Fox News were Neil Cavuto and Tony Snow. The network's opinion programming became its primary draw, with shows like The O'Reilly Report and Hannity and Colmes.

Fox is #1 in cable news today.

In spite of George Patton's assessment of Rommel's capabilities, until the American's arrived in Morocco, the British Forces were stymied by Rommel's abilities to be everywhere at once and his air superiority in the Sahara. Rommel was rumored to have been sympathetic to the assassination attempt on Hitler. Though Rommel was not charged in the plot, it was made clear to him that his family would not be punished if he took his own life, which he did and for which he was given a state funeral.

A football from Georgia Tech's 222-0 win over Cumberland College, Oct. 7, 1916. It still stands today as the most lopsided game in college football history.

Georgia Tech, led by legendary coach and trophy namesake John Heisman, humiliated Cumberland College 222-0 in the most lopsided college football game on record on this day in history, Oct. 7, 1916.

The football farce pitted national pigskin powerhouse Georgia Tech against a school from Lebanon, Tennessee, that reportedly pulled student volunteers off campus and out of frat houses to fulfill a contractual commitment.

"The rout can be traced back to a 22-0 loss the Georgia Tech baseball team, also coached by Heisman, suffered in the spring of 1915.

On October 8, 1918, PFC and Acting Corporal Alvin C. York, a Conscientous Objector, led an attack on a German machine gun nest that was decimating his fellow troops, reportedly killing at least 25 German soldiers, capturing an additional 132 and gathering 35 machine guns. He was part of a small detachment of the 82nd Division in the Argonne Forest near the Meuse River in France.

York was later promoted to sergeant and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. An investigation resulted in the upgrading of the award to the Medal of Honor. York's feat made him a national hero and international celebrity among allied nations.

After the war, York stayed out of the spotlight until Hollywood screenwriters finally convinced him to make a film about his story. He wanted to tell the story of his life after the war and the work he had done at home. Despite this desire, “Sergeant York” was released in 1941, and focused on his time in France.

Gary Cooper won Best Actor for his portrayal of York in the film, which also won Best Picture and Best Film Editing.

York died at the Veterans Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 2, 1964, of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 76. After a funeral service in his Jamestown church, with Gen. Matthew Ridgway representing President Lyndon Johnson, York was buried at the Wolf River Cemetery in Pall Mall.

Continue to Rest in Peace, Alvin Cullum York, a true American patriot and hero.

The Chicago Fire Department's training academy is currently located on the site of the O’Leary property where the Great Chicago Fire started.

A devastating fire broke out in a barn on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois on this day in history on Oct. 8, 1871.

Known as The Great Chicago Fire, the blaze burned through the heart of the Windy City, killing 300 people and leaving one-third of the city's population homeless, according to National Geographic.

In addition to the loss of life, the fire burned from Oct. 8 to Oct. 10, 1871, destroying thousands of buildings causing an estimated $200 million in damages, according to History.com.

Legend has it that a cow kicked over a lantern in a barn owned by the O’Leary Family at 137 DeKoven Street on the southwest side of Chicago.

However, other theories said it could have been due to human causes or even a meteor, the same source said.

The exact cause of the original barn fire was never officially determined, according to multiple sources.

The conditions that year included a devastatingly hot and dry summer — which resulted in countless smaller fires across the city, and Wisconsin’s own devastating Peshtigo Fire, according to Smithsonian Magazine.

"The Chicago blaze was so powerful that ‘fire devils,’ or vortexes of flames, would spin across buildings and jump to new blocks setting new structures alight," said the same source.

From there, the fire spread north, leaping across the river not once but twice, according to The Chicago Sun-Times.

"It burned across downtown and then headed for the North Side. Finally, on Oct. 10, firefighters extinguished the inferno," the same source chronicled.

Two things happened centuries apart on October 9 (well, plenty of other stuff as well).

1888: The Washington Monument opened to the public on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The marble-faced granite obelisk rises precisely 554 feet, 11/32 inches honors the first U.S. president, George Washington (Duh...).

It was built in 2 phases between 1848 and 1884, it was dedicated in 1885. The interior is occupied by iron stairs that spiral up the walls, with an elevator later added in the center, each supported by four iron columns. The stairs are in fifty sections, most on the north and south walls, with many long landings stretching between them along the east and west walls. These landings allowed many inscribed memorial stones of various materials and sizes to be easily viewed while the stairs were accessible - until 1976.

1981: On a stranger note, during their North American tour The Rolling Stones played the first of two nights at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The supporting act was Prince, who was dressed in his controversial bikini briefs and trench coat. He ran off stage after 15 minutes due to the crowd booing and throwing beer cans at him.

I guess the public had to catch up to the genius superstar...

    Great Plague of London
    Great-Plague-of-London_cover.jpg

Drivers of death carts in London would go street-to-street extolling people to "bring out your dead" at the height of the London plague outbreak in 1665

In 1665 and 1666, the last great outbreak of bubonic plague to hit England swept through the capital, London. The outbreak was much smaller in scale than the Black Death of the 14th century, but was still notable for having killed as many as 100,000 people - about a quarter of the city's population - in eighteen months.

By July 1665 the plague was spreading rapidly in London. Many fled, including the King Charles II, if they were wealthy enough to afford it. Parliament was moved to Oxford University from Westminster Palace. Many of the city's businesses closed. Diarist Samuel Pepys wrote much about life in the city during the plague, and of empty streets.

By September, as many as 7,000 people a week were dying, and many were thrown into mass graves. The true toll was likely to be much higher, since the deaths of poor were not recorded.

The University of Cambridge closed down during the outbreak, forcing a young Isaac Newton to continue his studies from home - during this time he expanded significantly on his new idea about the laws of gravity, among other things.

By November the outbreak started to taper off, and the King returned in February the next year when it was considered to be safe enough. Disaster would strike London again in 1666, with much of it being destroyed in the Great Fire of London that September.

    1985: Strawberry Fields in NYC

On what would've been John Lennon's 45th birthday, his widow Yoko Ono dedicates an area of New York City's Central Park to the memory of her slain husband. 'Strawberry Fields,' named for one of Lennon's songs, opens almost five years after the beloved musician's death shocked the world.
