On April 5, 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for the espionage act of passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.

On June 19, 1953, they were executed at Sing Sing Prison in the electric chair.

Based around the battleship Yamato, the IJN began Operation Ten-Go, an effective suicide sea attack on the US Navy. It would be the last battle the Japanese Navy would fight in WWII.

In 1862, the Civil War Battle of Shiloh began in Tennessee as Confederate forces launched a surprise attack against Union troops, who beat back the Confederates the next day.
In 1864, Louisiana opened a convention in New Orleans to draft a new state constitution, one that called for the abolition of slavery.
In 1909, American explorers Robert E. Peary and Matthew A. Henson and four Inuits became the first men to reach the North Pole.
In 1917, the United States entered World War I as the House joined the Senate in approving a declaration of war against Germany that was then signed by President Woodrow Wilson.

In Europe, US First Army captured Göttingen and US Ninth Army captured Eisenach and Hameln, Germany.

In the Pacific, the Japanese battleship Yamato, the center ship of Operation Ten-Go, was sunk as a result of torpedo hits from aircraft launched from carrier USS Yorktown. Yorktown aircraft would also strike and sink the light cruiser Yahagi before resuming strikes on Okinawa.

B-29 bombers, escorted by P-51 fighters from Iwo Jima, struck the Nakajima aircraft factory near Tokyo, Japan.

 

On April 7, 1948, The World Health Organization (WHO) was formally established as a specialized agency of the UN.

That was back when they were a trusted and reliable organization, 72 years before they were revealed as a corrupt, lying stooge of the Chinese Communist Party.

On April 9, 1865, General Robert E. Lee, surrendered to General Ulysses S, Grant at Appomattox Court House. While many cite this as the day the Civil War ended, Lee had surrendered only his army of Northern Virginia.

Several other Confederate forces had yet to surrender before President Andrew Johnson could declare that the Civil War was officially over.
