If that's true then the entire foundation of our legal system is fucked.
It's based on the idea that people can change, and in fact the word penitentiary comes from the word penitence.
I'll go even further than that though, and say that the entire notion of freedom of choice is threatened by this view.
The only way that we could reasonably say that people have free will is if they actually display that ability by changing their mind and/or course of action.

Now as a practical matter, if someone you are dating tells you, "I cheated on all of my ex's." then be weary, but I wouldn't assume that they can't stop cheating.
Maybe that's just me.

 

Once you have cheated - you can never stop.
You get more devious and more adventuresome as well.
I will never give a commitment to a partner because I know I will never be true.

If you get to know some one a little better, then it becomes a friendship.

once a cheater

Sorry to say but once a cheater always a cheater!

 

Is that like getting drunk once makes you always a drunk? I don't think so. It's a mindset. Otherwise I might as well take up womanizing. That's just not gonna happen. That's my choice.

 

My husband and I use to cheat on each other when we weren't married. I would always put the one I was using on ignore and block them from contacting me again. Soon as I moved in with my now husband, he confessed he had cheated on me but didn't want to lose me since I was the only one he actually needed. I helped him break his ties with the other girls, most of them were sweet and wished us the best, one was vindictive and cyber-stalks us both still.

We also learned early on that monogamy isn't perfect for us so we are in an open relationship so it doesn't count as cheating so long as I have his permission. One day, we will likely become monogamous, especially if our now boyfriend dumps us.

 

I'm not proud of it but in my first marriage I did in fact cheat on my wife. We got divorced and then I meet my current wife. I can say with a hand over my heart we have been together for over 5 years and I havehad no desire to cheat an I learned how much it tears people apart and would never do that again.

 

Not sure why somebody bumped such an old thread but no, I don't agree that a person will always cheat.

I think most people who cheat are people who get into committed relationships too easily or for the wrong reasons. The women eventually leave every guy they cheat on unless they've gotten themselves tied down by having kids with this person. They won't stop cheating until they stop this pattern of behavior at the beginning and become more selective.

Others enjoy the cheating itself. Those types probably won't change. A lot of them enjoy having the foundation of a relationship but acting single.

 

I cheated on my 1st husband with my present husband. He shares me all the time and I'm happier now.

 

I can honestly say I have never once cheated... Nor will I... Now I have end relationships to get into another... Maybe thats the same thing in some peoples minds. I think having clearly defined rules about how any given relationship is going to work is the key... IF you go into something with your eyes open there is little chance of being disappointed with how things might turn out.
