Acts that only managed one hit song in the Top 40 in their careers.

Feel free to comment if the song posted 1) should have been a hit at all; 2) should have been the only hit for the performer or band; or 3) the performer or band should have had more hits in your opinion.....

"Do You Wanna Make Love"---Peter McCann
peaked at No. 5 in August 1977

Great new thread, ump. Loads to choose from.

I thought about the other day with the Tull video featuring Mick Abrahams. He formed Blodwyn Pig and released this a single. It entered the British charts and, just for a moment, I looked like they were doing better than Tull. Difficult finding any details about chart position.

By the way, would people get upset if "Hotel California" by the Eagles was included here? It's the only song of theirs I have ever heard. :D

Hector, I would have to double-check, but I believe that the Eagles had at least 6 Top 40 singles, so 'Hotel California' wouldn't fit.

This was a Number 1 hit in the US in December 1962, probably more because of what the title represented than for the music itself. One of the Joe Meek stable, they used innovative sounds but the overall effect is rather "tinny". They had further success with "Robot" and "Globetrotter" in the UK but never made any more impact in the US.

Generally, religious songs are absolutely horrible but this one is great. The irony is that nobody listens to it for the words.

    Great responses, everyone!

I'm trying to keep track of all of these and I see I have set myself up for quite a task!

Wantsomefun----I am pretty certain that "D.O.A." by Bloodrock did not make it into the Top 40, but I will do some research.

CSNatureboy, Rick Astley actually had SEVEN Top 40 hits and was far from a "One Hit Wonder" (Aside from 'Never Gonna Give Up Up', 'Together Forever' was a No. 1; 'She Wants To Dance With Me' and 'Cry For Help' were both Top 10.)

It made it to #21. Briefly. Probably for about four minutes and thirty-seven seconds.

You are partially correct. I checked BILLBOARD and it peaked at #36 on March 6, 1971.

Maybe you are going by local radio play and not the national Top 40.

Boy, was I WAY off. The Eagles had SEVENTEEN Top 40 hits (in the U.S., which are charted by Billboard): First was 'Take It Easy' in 1972 and last was 'Get Over It' in 1994.

    This is incredible:

Though I am certain that Jimi Hendrix had several Top 40 hits in Great Britain, THIS was his ONLY Top 40 hit in the United States:

"All Along The Watchtower" (peaked at #20 in October, 1968)

Gosh, I didn't know he was so relatively unsuccessful in the USA - although he headlined US festivals he didn't have chart hits? Here his records are still played not only on the rock radio stations but also on the 'gold' hit stations.

Considered by many critics and music experts as the worst song ever recorded to make it to number 2 in Billboard top 40.

One-hit wonders don't always need to reach the top 10 to become successful. This reached No25 in October 1961 and yet is one of the most famous pieces of music in the world.

And now all you need is a drum machine and a synthesizer and a little imagination. I always wanted to play drums but never got the hang of it ... had that whole Steve Martin in the film The Jerk thing going on lol. Great on guitar though. I can lay down drum tracks on my midi equipment pretty well though and what cost me over a million in the 80's I can do on my computers now ... and then some.

I remember we shared studio pics a few years ago but didn't know you played drums and envy those that can.

I was lucky enough to get an autographed snare skin from John Bonham that I still have today and one from Neil Peart as well.

NOTHING beats listening to a good drum solo ...

I always reckoned that someone who wanted to be a drummer had to have 4 brains. Your hands and feet are doing totally different things at the same time. This is why, if you watch someone like Ginger Baker, it is awesome.

Good one, Tenguy. I remember thinking that this was a fun tune when I first heard it and certainly should have made it up to #80 or so (it reached #4.....go figure). Then I got tired of it quickly.
