When this reached #37 on November 11, 1972, many thought (after four albums with low sales) that Mott were finally on their way.

They never smelled the Top 40 again.

On May 25th, 1968, The Irish Rovers song "The Unicorn" peaked at #7

They did have two other Top 100 songs (at #75 and #91), but they never sniffed the Top 40 again.

Just curious, ump: what are you using as your reference material as a source of one hit wonders?

 

That's easy, Dudley. The Billboard Top 100 Charts (later, the Top 200 charts). Yes, it only rates the U.S., but in comparison, a Top 40 hit in the U.S. could have 40,000 sales, while a song that makes the British, French, Irish, German, etc. Top 40 could have less than 10,000 sales and on and on.

I guess it all depends on what one defines as sales high enough to rate a song a "Top 40" single; the U.S. sales have always been the standard, which is why most bands worldwide want to make a hit in the U.S. market.
