US consumer confidence rebounds sharply in July

    7/30/19

American consumer confidence rebounded this month to the highest level since November after drooping in June.

The Conference Board, a business research group, said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index rose to 135.7 in July from 124.3 in June. The bounce back from last month’s drop was much stronger than economists expected.

The index measures consumers’ assessment of current economic conditions and their expectations for the next six months. Both rose substantially in July.

Consumers shrugged off trade tensions with China and a slowing U.S. economy.

Economists keep close watch on consumers’ spirits because their spending accounts for about 70% of U.S. economic activity. The government reported last week that consumer spending rose at a 4.3% annual rate from April through June, fastest pace since the end of 2017.

“These days, it seems that everywhere you turn, the news regarding the consumer is strikingly good,” Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities, said in a research note.

The overall economy grew at a 2.1% pace in the second quarter, down from 3.1% from January-March. But Americans are enjoying unusual job security: The unemployment rate has come in below 4% for 13 of the past 15 months.

Lynn Franco, senior director of economic indicators at the Conference Board, says the sustained confidence should continue to support robust spending in the near-term.

More Americans sign contracts to buy homes in June

    7/30/19

More Americans signed contracts to purchase homes in June, marking the second straight month of growth.

The National Association of Realtors said Tuesday that its pending home sales index rose 2.8% to 108.3 in June, up from 105.4 in May. Pending home sales are up 1.6% from their pace a year ago, snapping a 17-month streak of annual declines.

Sales have likely been helped by lower interest rates, which are on average under 4% on a 30-year mortgage.

All four regions saw contracts up from May and last year, with the West seeing the biggest jump in June at 5.4%. The West is also up the most year-over-year with gains of 2.5%.

Pending sales is a measure of home purchases that are usually completed a month or two later.

‘Serving under Trump is embarrassing’: Fifth Republican congressman retires in just two weeks as GOP fears more exits
[IMG] Conrad Duncan,The Independent 10 hours ago

A fifth Republican congressman appears set to quit the party in the space of two weeks amid ongoing tension over Donald Trump’s presidency.

Representative Mike Conaway will not seek re-election to his Texas seat in 2020, the Politico website reported. He has not confirmed his decision or reason for retiring but he is set to make a statement to the media.

The move has prompted worries within the party that others will follow suit and step down, because of the difficulties that come with serving under Mr Trump and working with a Democratic majority in Congress.

“Serving in the era of Trump has few rewards,” Tom Davis, a former senior Republican congressman, told The Hill website. “He has made an already hostile political environment worse.

“Every day there is some indefensible tweet or comment to defend or explain. It is exhausting and often embarrassing.”

Mr Conaway, who has served in congress for 15 years, will join Republican representatives Paul Mitchell, Pete Olson, Martha Roby and Rob Bishop in announcing his retirement.

Mr Mitchell had told the House that “rhetoric overwhelms policy and politics consumes much of the oxygen” in Washington DC.

One of his former campaign workers Jamie Roe, later said that Mitchell had “been frustrated with the fact that things don’t get done here”.

While he did not explicitly attribute blame to the president, he was one of the first Republican congressmen to complain about Mr Trump’s recent racist remarks about the group of Democratic congresswoman known as the squad.

“We must be better than comments like these,” he tweeted after the president suggested Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan should go back to their “broken and crime-infested” countries.

Mr Mitchell added: “I share the political frustrations with some members of the other party, but these comments are beneath leaders.”

Ms Roby said she would not vote for Mr Trump in 2016 as his behaviour had been “unacceptable as a candidate for president” but has since improved their relationship and received an endorsement from him in 2018.

The Republican Party is facing a difficult task in reclaiming the House in 2020 after Democrats were victorious in last year’s midterm elections.

Mr Trump’s approval ratings remain low, currently at about 43 per cent on average, and his divisive political agenda could prove costly in congressional elections next year.

Mr Conaway, Mr Mitchell, Ms Roby and Mr Bishop all represent safe Republican districts that are expected to pick candidates from the party in 2020.

However, Mr Olson’s district could be competitive – the Texas congressman saw his majority cut to 5 per cent in 2018.

Even in safe districts, the prospect of returning to the House in 2020 may be unappealing for many conservative representatives as Democrats are expected to win a majority again next year.

In a general ballot, recent polling has shown Democrats lead Republicans by 5.6 per cent for the 2020 election, according to an average by political analysis website FiveThirtyEight.

All 435 voting seats in the House of Representatives will be up for election in 2020, along with 34 seats in the US Senate.

No now this is a lie shootersa. I object to Trump trying to steal Bernie Sanders and the Democrats ideas. And Trump supporters calling us socialists like that's a bad thing when its Trump and his administration actually employing socialism. I even thanked Trump for it.

My objection is as always the lie of conservatism as it is preached and practiced in this nation.

And now back to the beat.

Here are 10 damning details from new polling of Donald Trump’s public approval

Oh, did bernie et al have a copyright or trade mark on the idea(s) they stole??:p

    1. thinskin
There are many things that cannot be copyrighted trade marked or patented nevertheless the originator of the idea should get a reference and an acknowledgement.

In civilized society that is....not something you know about obviously!

Well, yes, Shooter can see that as heathens, we should just siddown and shut up and let our betters run things.
Were you thinking you might apply, Thinskin??:cool:

So Shooter got curious; where did the idea of allowing the import of drugs from Canada, or for that matter, from foreign countries?
Well, Shooter discovered that the earliest Federal bill addressing importation of drugs was 2003. There might be earlier ones, but that's what Shooter has found.
And the idea appears to have come from HHS, not from Bernie Sanders.
Or maybe from California. California was kicking this idea around in 2000. https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2000-dec-04-mn-60970-story.html
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5478407/

Bernie is sort of the ring leader, he's been pushing the idea for at least the last 4 sessions of Congress, but to say it''s Bernies idea might be a stretch.
      Not that it matters.

"Only the best people" remember that?

Well it wasn't that Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) had no qualifications for DNI. It was not he got caught multiple times spouting false and outrageous conspiracy theories that were debunked nearly as fast as he could spout them. And it wasn't that even his internet Congressional page was full of stupid lies that were proven lies almost as fast as his conspiracy theories. And it sure wasn't Democratic objections. All those are pluses in the mad king dictator's eyes. No it was another case of Republicans telling Moscow Mitch there ain't no fucking way we are going to vote for this clown. And then Moscow Mitch breaking the news to Trump.

Trump pulls controversial intel chief nomination — and whines he’s been treated ‘very unfairly’

*Always with the psychological projection because you can't get any lamer than this phony bullshit excuse. Just look at what Trump is saying here. If the only problem is the media treating Ratcliffe "unfairly" and that being too hard on him and his family then that would also be true for the next person he nominates and we would never have another Director of National Intelligence who is supposed to protect us from another 9/11. So just another obvious stupid Trump lie for his gullible brainwashed parrot supporters.

    And for bonus points.

Trump brutally mocked after his intel nominee crashes and burns in just 5 days: ‘It is called VETTING you idiot‘

Trump Golf Costs Top $110 Million -- More Than 1 Estimate For All Of Obama’s Travel

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. – Donald Trump’s presidential golf costs have topped $110 million in his 2 1/2 years in office – more than $4 million more than a conservative group’s estimate for predecessor Barack Obama’s total travel costs over two full terms.

Trump arrived at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Friday evening and is scheduled to remain there through Sunday afternoon. It is his 18th golf trip there since taking office. Sunday will mark his 67th day at that course and his 199th day at a golf course he owns.

The White House on Saturday did not respond to queries about Trump’s golf activities.

Each of the president’s trips to Bedminster costs taxpayers at least $1.1 million in travel and security expenses, according to a HuffPost analysis. Each trip to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida – of which Trump has made 24 – costs taxpayers $3.4 million.

Since taking office, Trump also has visited his golf resorts in Los Angeles; Doral, Florida; Doonbeg, Ireland; and Turnberry, Scotland ― all on the taxpayer dime. He also has made 64 day trips to his course in northern Virginia.

Judicial Watch, a tax-exempt conservative group, in 2017 said that its tally of Obama’s travel costs based on documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act lawsuits had hit $105.7 million. That total, though, appears to include official trips of Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, as well as some campaign-related travel that was partially reimbursed by the Democratic Party.

Trump’s $110.3 million total in HuffPost’s analysis is for travel to and from golf vacations, and does not include official or campaign travel. It is based on cost elements derived from a Government Accountability Office report released in January that detailed four Mar-a-Lago trips Trump took just weeks after entering office.

During Obama’s presidency, Trump was a frequent critic of Obama’s golf hobby. “Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than Carter,” he wrote on Twitter in 2014.

During his campaign for president, Trump claimed that he would be too busy working to have time for any vacations at all. “I love golf, but if I were in the White House, I don’t think I’d ever see Turnberry again. I don’t think I’d ever see Doral again,” he told a rally audience in February 2016. “I don’t ever think I’d see anything. I just want to stay in the White House and work my ass off.”

Instead, Trump has been on the golf course two and a half times as much as Obama was at the same time in his presidency. And, because he insists on playing on his own courses in Florida and New Jersey so much, his golf-related costs to taxpayers are triple that of Obama’s in the same time period.

Most of Obama’s golf rounds were played at military bases within motorcade range of the White House, which cost taxpayers relatively little. In contrast, 68% of Trump’s golf days have been at his resorts that require the use of Air Force jets, Marine Corps helicopters, and Air Force transport planes to move his motorcade vehicles. His trips to Mar-a-Lago also require Coast Guard boats and ships to patrol the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. On his overseas golf outings, the travel footprint is even larger.

Trump’s recent trip to Doonbeg, Ireland, for example, cost taxpayers some $3.6 million, even though it involved relatively short flights to and from southern England and northern France.

Just goes to show you how interested in truth the 2020 Democraps are interested in. Even when he says what they want him to say, the pieces of shit demand that it not be reported that way. And it also shows that, "The Gray Lady" is nothing more than a feeble old woman, gasping for air, while in an oxygen tent.

The speculation was that during the congressional recess it would be the Democrats facing protests and angry constituents. But right now it seems to be the Republicans. Like the one that spiraled out of control in Utah. Where among other things a GOP congressman said as far as I know Trump has never shot anyone and the crowd yelled back neither did Charles Manson.
