The Emancipation Proclamation did not Free one single slave in the United States, this is part of revisionist history ! Lincoln never gave a fuck about freeing slaves, he publicly stated that he wanted to preserve the union with or without freeing slaves. The E P only freed slaves in the Confederate States. A separate Country in which Lincoln had no control over. It was a puny political move considering the North was losing the war. It only freed slaves in a country Lincoln had no control over, it didn't fee any slaves in northern states, and they were not freed until well after the war.

Slavery was not legal in the northern states, though you are right that Lincoln’s Proclamation was pre-mature it did free the enslaved after the Union’s victory.

It is similar to Republicans enacting anti-abortion trigger laws that will automatically go into effect upon the overturning of Roe V Wade (also a puny political move)

      Don’t you think?

If I may quote Charlie Sheen in 2 and a half men "Drinking is for people who can afford to lose brain cells " ! quote me : " Some people do not have enough brain cells to function, let alone make political decisions." Clearly those who decided to remove the monuments fall in the latter category!

Virginia Judges Toss Last-Ditch Efforts to Save Robert E. Lee Statue

A gargantuan statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, standing on state-owned property in Richmond and fenced off since the beginning of the year, will finally come down. Two justices of the Virginia Supreme Court, ruling in two separate cases, have agreed that Gov. Ralph Northam has the power to dismantle the statue. When Northam first announced removal plans last summer, at the height of the protests against the death of George Floyd, a small group of nearby residents and a descendant of the family that donated the site over a century ago filed suit against Northam.

Both suits failed but the plaintiffs appealed to the high court. The justices there determined that “restrictive covenants” in the nineteenth-century deeds that transferred the statue to the state are “unreasonable” as their effect forces the state to endorse “a message with which it now disagrees.” Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy, has already removed several monuments, including two commemorating Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis. As of Thursday, removal activity on the Lee status had not begun.

It didn't have to! The last Northern state to abolish slavery was West Virginia, and they did it in 1863, which was before the emancipation proclamation.

I think it is acceptable for elected officials in a city or town to decide to remove statues. I think it is not acceptable for mobs to pull down or deface statues.

    Historical Correction:
    1. Most of the Confederate Statues were erected after reconstruction, in the 1930’s during the Jim Crow era. (Racist intent, not heroism)

    2. Nathan B. Forrest was a Grand Dragon of the KKK (not creator)

Lincoln’s position was to prevent secession, though he was firmly against slavery, he would except the status quo.

Once the Confederacy was formed however it became clear that this war was about slavery.

So for no apparent reason, the confederate states decided to secede?

when you lose an unpopular war, that was started in defense of unjustified beliefs, the truth becomes your enemy.

So to justify the war, the losers started trying to rewrite the history in an attempt to defend their actions.

This also applies to those who would defend the Iraq/Afghanistan wars, at least why we invaded Iraq.

The war hawks who criticize Biden for withdrawal is also pretty rich.

Though I agree that it was not as smooth as I would have liked it to be, they did a DAMN good job, regardless of the right wing media’s constant berating

The woeful ignorance of American history is what allowed southern states to re-write history and come up with the "lost cause" myth that the Civil War was not about slavery in an attempt to literally whitewash their legacy. When if you go back and read the proclamations announcing their secession nearly every Confederate state listed the preservation of slavery as their reason.

It is long long past time to address those racist lies and white supremacy.

I opposed forced school busing and still do. KPFA is a left wing radio station that broadcasts from Berkeley, California. One time Gore Vidal said of busing, "It is the liberal's Vietnam. It is not working." Judges who forced busing decisions sent their children to white private schools if the alternative was to have them experience busing. I have never talked to a person who experienced busing who did not comment on the experience with with anger and bitterness. I voted for Joe Biden in the general election. Nevertheless, I was angry when he choose Kamala Harris as his running mate. When she criticized Biden for opposing busing in one of their debates I wanted him to explain why he had opposed busing, and still does. Busing was always unpopular with the voters.

Old Dog's diversion attempt not withstanding, we were reminded from Kamala's exposure that biden is indeed a racist.
A hair sniffing, creepy touch, demented racist.
And despicables put him in office cause, you know, no one else fit their agenda.
With Joe in front, they can load up Kamala at any time and give us a "Kneel with dignity" president.

Alexander Hamilton Stephens, The Cornerstone Speech (1861) On March 21, 1861, Alexander Hamilton Stephens, vice president of the newly established Confederate States of America, stood before an overflowing crowd at the Athenaeum in Savannah, Georgia, and delivered a speech outlining what he believed was the great principle upon which the new government was created.

    --------

But not to be tedious in enumerating the numerous changes for the better, allow me to allude to one other - though last, not least. The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution - African slavery as it exists amongst us - the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution...

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea [to freedom]; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery - subordination to the superior race - is his natural and normal condition. [Applause.] This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.

Slavery was permitted by many governments around the world, not quite exactly what this yo-yo
    Alexander Hamilton Stephens wants to claim;

This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world

It's no wonder they lost the war, the war against a united nation to serve for the personal and economic incentives and beliefs that are false in nature.

Sure does resemble what's happening today...promoting lies and bullshit to push a radical anti-American agenda....and that is also losing.

Questions raised over 1887 time capsule missing from under removed Confederate statue

    Tom Boggioni
    October 11, 2021

Workers remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia (AFP)
According to a report from The Richmond News, authorities in the state are baffled that they can't find a time capsule, dating back to 1887, that was reportedly placed under a statue of Robert E. Lee that was hauled away under the governor's orders.

As the News reports, "In June, Gov. Ralph Northam (D) announced plans to excavate the time capsule, believed to have been placed under the northeast cornerstone in 1887. According to the Daily Times and Richmond Dispatch newspapers, a copper box contained 60 objects related to the Confederacy and Richmond, including a picture of Abraham Lincoln lying in his coffin."

However, the capsule containing the historical documents and other items is nowhere to be found.

According to the Eric Kolenich of the News, "Last month, a day after Lee came down, a masonry crew spent 12 hours prying 19 granite blocks off the pedestal in search of the 1887 relics."

That has authorities considering two possibilities, one of which is that it is sitting there somewhere -- but where exactly is an unknown.

"When the cornerstone was placed in 1887, the pedestal hadn't been designed yet, and it wasn't completed until early 1890, the same year the statue was revealed. The final pedestal was different than originally intended, too. According to the Southern Historical Society papers, additional carved figures were left off the pedestal because the city lacked the money to pay for it," the report states with historian Sarah Driggs explaining, "We don't know how big the foundation should have been."

"If it's not farther in, maybe it's farther down, hidden under a few feet of mortar and rock, said Dale Brumfield, an author and historian who has studied the time capsule. The northeast cornerstone looked special. It was finished on all six sides and looks like it was meant to be put on display during the large ceremony held in 1887 when the cornerstone was placed," the report continues.

The other suggestion is that was never buried because it was stolen while work progressed.

"The cornerstone was laid on Oct. 27, 1887. But the pedestal wasn't finished until 1890, the same year the statue was unveiled," the report states. "A newspaper account describing the statue's arrival in Richmond said the boxes in which the statue came in would have been "'hipped away and carried off by relic hunters' had there not been a police officer standing guard."

According to Givens. there is still a possibility it will be found the news is reporting.

"There's at least one other method of looking for the time capsule without disassembling the pedestal. It could be scanned with an electromagnetic induction, similar to a giant metal detector, Givens said," adding, "I'm positive science will catch up to the issue of finding it in the future."

    You can read more here.

So if it fits your narrative, it’s okay.

This country was not born on modern day ideals or principles, the Civil War was fought to preserve much of what Jefferson stood for, hell man the CSA president was named for him.

The statues in question were NOT erected in the years immediately following the Civil War, they were erected in reaction to the Reconstruction and Jim Crow era.

Granted some were created by segregationists, but not the majority. BTW, modern day segregationists include icons like, Sen Byrd (Hillary Clinton’s avowed mentor), Albert Gore Sr., Sen Strom Thurman and many other politicians of the 50s and 60s that are held in high esteem by Democrats.

There are hundreds of statues and monuments in cities all over our country, of those who owned slaves and participated in the trade of human being. These are no different from the ones that cancel culture and their progressive liberal protagonists are tearing down in southern cities.

BTW, I do not advocate restoring those statues which have already been torn down, except for those which were destroyed in error.

The difference between founders who owned slaves and the Confederacy just glares like the treasonous conservative/Republican hypocritical sun. The founders built this country and brought it together of the United States of America. While the Confederacy is much like the treasonous conservative/Republican party today. They committed treason against the United States of America and the Constitution for no other reason than to be able to continue owning and profiting off Black People.

While today's treasonous conservative/Republicans are willing to turn traitors against the country and our Constitutions for just one man. The most mentally ill, stupid and ignorant, incompetent, corrupt, and deadly president in US history. Because Traitor Trump is their Chosen One.
