Leaked document details lobbyists 'auctioning' off access to DeSantis for campaign cash

A spreadsheet obtained by the Washington Post demonstrated how Gov. Ron DeSantis and his inner circle pressed lobbyists to sell access to the Florida Republican by setting up a bidding war among wealthy donors for access to "leisure activities" with the potential GOP candidate for president.

According to the report, the document was created with the assistance of top DeSantis aide Heather Barker and was aimed at "the state’s top 40 lobbyists and about 100 of their 'Suggested Clients to target'"

As the Post's Josh Dawsey and Isaac Arnsdorf wrote, "The Florida governor’s fundraisers hoped that nine lobbyists would raise at least $1 million each for DeSantis’s political action committee," adding, "To help them haul in large sums of money, the document suggested that lobbyists be allowed to offer their clients certain perks, such as meals and rounds of golf with DeSantis, who loves the sport. DeSantis’s fundraisers envisioned that some golf outings with the governor would net contributions of $75,000 or more, according to other emails among DeSantis’s political advisers."

In emails obtained by the Post, Barker encouraged the lobbyists by writing, "I could sell golf for $50k this morning.”

In addition to golf outings, the documents listed other offers that could be promised to rake in donations including, "lunch, meetings, dinner, tours, events, etc."

According to the report, "Each have a threshold (ex. Golf $25k per person, which is a deal), reads the document, whose authenticity was confirmed by multiple people with knowledge of it."

"While it is common for politicians to seek donations from lobbyists, the efforts by DeSantis to effectively auction off his leisure time to those seeking to influence state policy created a special pathway of access for wealthy donors to the governor that is striking in the way that it was documented in writing, ethics experts said," the report states before adding, "DeSantis made some calls to lobbyists, the documents show, and often took meetings that were orchestrated by the team, which was run by political aides to the governor."

A rare, flesh-eating bacteria found in brackish seawater has killed five people in the Tampa Bay area this year. Now, health officials are warning Florida residents to stay vigilant when swimming in the state’s waters thanks to Vibrio vulnificus, a naturally occurring bacteria with some nasty symptoms. “Living in Florida, being around the marine environment, we need to be aware of what it is,” Dr. Eric Shamas, an emergency medicine physician at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg told local station WESH 2. The bacteria can enter a swimmer through open wounds, but it can also invade the body when eating raw shellfish—oysters, particularly. An infected patient can experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fevers, low blood pressure and even septic shock. Luckily, this year is on track to record fewer cases statewide than last year. 'Blurring the lines': Government contract holders and DeSantis' own staff among his biggest donors

Ron DeSantis' campaign brought in half a million dollars in donations from Tallahassee in June – including a lot of cash from questionable sources, the Tampa Bay Times reported Monday.

Donors included lobbyists and staffers employed in his own office, business owners who hold government contracts worth millions and at least six state agency leaders who owe their positions to the Florida governor, the newspaper reported.

His own employees gave $30,000, the report said.

"While the full-throated financial support from the center of DeSantis’ power is not unexpected, it underscores how much he has leaned on Florida, sometimes prompting questions about the scalability of his campaign," the Times reported.

"The money also comes after several instances of DeSantis or his staff blurring the lines between his official and political operations.

When asked about the donations, campaign press secretary Jeremy Redfern, who himself gave money, said making a donation “as a private citizen is my First Amendment right.”

“I believe in what Gov. DeSantis is doing and what he is fighting for, and my support outside of the Executive Office stands as a testament to his leadership,” he said.

DeSantis' feud with Disney has walloped Florida taxpayers with millions in legal fees: report

Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Administrator Glen Gilzean on Wednesday revealed that the state-run agency which oversees The Walt Disney Company's land "expects to more than triple what it spends in legal fees next year following a high-profile battle between the entertainment giant and Governor Ron DeSantis," Politico's Kimberly Leonard reports.

CFTOD "anticipates it'll spend $4.5 million in legal fees in 2024, after already incurring $1.9 million in costs this year," Leonard writes.

"The figures were presented as part of the district's larger budget proposal," which Leonard notes "come as a result of dueling lawsuits between Walt Disney World and the board, whose members were hand-picked by DeSantis. The governor put new leaders in charge after the Walt Disney Co. publicly opposed a bill he signed into law limiting when and how educators can teach LGBTQ topics in public schools."

Leonard recalls that "Disney sued in federal court in April, alleging retaliation against its right to speech, and the board filed a dueling lawsuit in state court."

Gilzean, Leonard continues, "also laid out $16 million in planned cuts as part of his presentation, largely achieved through cutting the millage rate, or tax rate, that'll affect how much people and businesses pay in property taxes in the district. Due to higher property values, the move won't necessarily reduce what area homeowners and businesses pay in property taxes but will keep the payments from going up next year as much as they otherwise would."

Leonard says that "one of the more contentious budget items set to be excised was $2.5 million in Disney World perks for roughly 400 district employees, a tab the district picked up for decades. One firefighter who spoke during the public comment period in the meeting broke down in tears over the change, saying he otherwise couldn’t afford to take his family to the parks."

The CFTOD, Leonard adds, "plans to increase spending in other areas, including allocating $1 million toward a new 9/11 structure that will include a new internet network, and $2.7 million to replace a guardrail in the district. It hired new public affairs officers and added staff in the public records office after getting a surge in documents requests. The total increase in spending, when also factoring the legal fees, will be nearly $12.4 million, though that's offset by the savings in other areas, Gilzean estimated. Total anticipated expenditures for 2024 are $192 million, the presentation showed."

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis appeared to stumble through the early part of Wednesday night’s Republican presidential debate, and social media pounced.

Laura Loomer, a right wing activist and Trump supporter, wrote on her X account that "@RonDeSantis is having a meltdown on stage. He looks so angry."

"Is he coked up ??” another user replied.

“Why're Rob DeSantis’s pupils dilated? What did they give him before the debate? Was it pre workout, coke, vyvanse, adderall, maybe Molly?” an X user wrote on their social media account.

"Um paging RoB DeSantis (sic) You're on TV NOT twitter, fyi” another X user wrote.

‘That’s Not the Question!’ Fox Anchors Confront DeSantis For Repeatedly Dodging When Asked About Trump

Fox News’ Martha MacCallum repeatedly called out Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for dodging her questions about Donald Trump.

The third block of the Fox News 2024 Republican primary debate gravitated around questions about Trump’s legal issues, and whether the former president should be disqualified from running for office again because of his conduct. One of the questions the candidates were asked was whether Mike Pence did the right thing as vice president by defying Trump’s demand he overturn the 2020 election on Jan. 6.

When MacCallum asked DeSantis the question, he instantly went off-topic by saying “We need to end the weaponization of these federal agencies.”


“That’s not the question,” MacCallum and Bret Baier called out in unison.

“I know,” DeSantis said, “but here’s the thing.”

Baier asked DeSantis once again to answer the question, but DeSantis went on with his tangent that “This is not about January 6th of 2021. It is about January 20th of 2025 when the next president is gonna take office.”

MacCallum again noted, “You did not answer the question.”

After a brief segue to Pence, the anchors turned back to the Florida governor.

“We’ve answered this so many times,” DeSantis complained. He continued to gripe about the topic while Baier took the governor’s comments as a “yes” answer to the original question.

Florida's Broward County says losses mount for tourism as more conventions stay away, citing fear for safety of diverse groups

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Broward County tourism officials say that financial losses are continuing to mount as conventions once scheduled for Fort Lauderdale have opted to go someplace else.

The tally now stands at 14, with four of those conventions backing out in August alone, according to Visit Lauderdale, the agency formerly known as the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau.

They cite Florida’s culture wars on issues that critics say attack Blacks, gays, and transgender youth, as well as policies targeting state universities as well as migrants.

Broward’s tourism arm said the lost conventions could have brought hotel stays to Fort Lauderdale and its surrounding cities, which also meant money spent on restaurants and attractions.


On the updated list now includes the National Sales Network Conference, whose founder and CEO emailed the county Monday: “Moving forward, we will not consider conducting any future conferences in the state of Florida given the Governor’s statement that slavery was good for Black people.”

And the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology wasn’t planning its annual convention until 2028, but backed out last week, citing in an email: “At the moment, we aren’t able to consider any Florida cities because of the political issues around women’s health and the added challenges with higher education there.”

It adds to the laundry list of groups including the Chicago-based American Specialty Toy Retailing Association, which had planned a 3,000-person conference in Fort Lauderdale in 2026, and cited the “unfriendly political environment in Florida.” The Washington, D.C.-based Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs, which was scheduled to come to Fort Lauderdale in January, diverted to New Orleans instead because of what’s perceived as anti-migrant policies. And the Atlanta-based aParent Miracles Foundation for this November is headed to Texas instead after the NAACP issued a travel advisory for Florida “in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ attempts to erase Black history, and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools,” the organizer wrote the county’s tourism office.

Last month, the Tom Joyner Foundation, and the 1,700 hotel rooms it wanted, disappeared, too. “If this were about economics, that would be one thing, but what is at the core of the issue from the above, is fear for the safety of African-American, LGBTQ+ and a smaller portion of even Latino students and others traveling to Florida to participate in what is a national event,” an organizer wrote the tourism office. The agency also cited the state’s new permitless gun carry laws, which allow people to carry concealed weapons without training or a permit, as another reason to skip the Sunshine State. That legislation was hailed by the NRA.

The emails were obtained by the South Florida Sun Sentinel in a public records request.

Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale, Broward County’s tourism promotion arm, said Tuesday she was “keeping a careful eye on the trend, which isn’t great.”

“It’s most troubling because of the economic impact which translates into Broward County residents’ jobs,” saying an estimated 10% of Broward’s jobs were directly or indirectly tied to tourism.

Ritter’s agency is trying to offset the damage with advertising efforts to show Florida, at least the southern end, is welcoming. On Tuesday, they successfully appealed to the Broward County commission to spend nearly $800,000 — money raised from a tourism hotel tax — to participate in the January 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif.

Chief among the float participants considered to perform: Drag queens.
