    Finland to announce application for NATO membership on May 12
    Finland will announce its decision on an application for NATO membership on May 12, Finnish news outlet Iltalehti reported.

    The outlet reported that "the position is that Finland is applying for membership."

    Finish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin will review the application with party leaders before reporting the decision to NATO. Niinisto will also hold a press conference to announce his position and those of the state leadership and the party field.

    The decision will be confirmed by a committee formed by the president and key ministers.

    This is scary, because Peter Zeihan makes sense of the Russian invasion of Ukraine from a Russian viewpoint. I had thought of the invasion of Ukraine as a mistake that Russia could withdraw from the way we withdrew from Vietnam and Afghanistan without any harmful results other than to our national pride. If Peter Zeihan is right the Russian people and government see their control of Ukraine as necessary to their security and continued independence.

      I guess the thing that surprises me the most is that he says that for historical and strategic and existential reasons, the Russians aren't stopping when they have ALL of Ukraine, they're going for Poland too.
