Pompeo says US warned Russia about threats to Americans

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the State Department has warned Russian officials about all threats that Russia poses to Americans and U.S. interests in various parts of the world.

Pompeo was pressed during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing about reports of Russia paying bounties to Taliban fighters to kill American troops in Afghanistan.

The secretary of State did not comment on whether he specifically raised the bounty allegations, but told the panel that threats from Russia against Americans in the middle east and elsewhere were discussed.

“Yes, I can assure you that each time I have spoken to [Russian] Foreign Minister [Sergey] Lavrov, I have raised all of the issues that put any Americans at risk,” Pompeo said in response to a question from the committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Bob Menendez (N.J.).

“We have raised this at my level and not only at my level,” Pompeo added.

Pompeo has previously pushed back on the reports of Russian bounties, which were first reported by The New York Times and The Washington Post, accusing journalists of spreading misinformation.

When the reports surfaced, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany denied that President Trump and Vice President Pence were briefed on the intelligence but did not deny that the intelligence was accurate.

A White House spokeswoman this week emphasized that the reports "were based on unverified intel" but said "we still take it extremely seriously."

"The safety of U.S. forces is the President’s top priority in Afghanistan," White House director of strategic communications Alyssa Farah tweeted, noting that the intelligence assessment was also shared with Capitol Hill.

"Our country has seen the very real consequences of overreacting to unverified intelligence in the past. @realDonaldTrump will not repeat these same mistakes," she added.

Pompeo’s Senate testimony came a day after Trump confirmed that he did not bring up the intelligence with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The secretary of State declined to say if he would recommend that Trump raise the matter with Putin.

These three Republicans are struggling to come up with an excuse for why they were involved in Trump’s Ukraine scandal

Amid the flurry of news last week, three Republicans were outed for their involvement in President Donald Trump’s Ukraine scandal that ultimately led to his impeachment. Now it seems they’re either in hiding or they’re staying as quiet as possible hoping the news disappears.

Steve Benen at the “Rachel Maddow Show” wrote Monday that he couldn’t help but notice the sudden silence from these three Republicans.

Rep. Devin Nunes was probed by Democratic colleague Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) as to why he was getting “dirt” from a foreign source on former Vice President Joe Biden. Nunes refused to answer. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) similarly faced allegations. Johnson was probed by local ABC reporter in Milwaukee about relying on information from pro-Putin Ukrainians. His excuse was that he is “getting information from a variety of sources.”

Last year, the Senate GOP voted to block a bill that would mandate any political candidate that gets information from a foreign source hand it over to the FBI. It seems Americans have discovered one of the reasons why the Republicans opposed it is that they were already getting intel from foreign sources to use in an election.

Then there’s Trump’s campaign adviser, Jason Miller, who “repeatedly dodged a question about whether the campaign is receiving or will accept foreign assistance,” reported the Huffington Post. Miller said it was a “silly question,” even if it was happening in real-time.

Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked Miller three times about whether Trump would use foreign assistance to win in November. The answer may be obvious, but Miller still refused to answer. Last year, Trump even confessed that he would welcome foreign intervention, one month later Trump attempted to bribe the new Ukrainian president.

“The resulting mosaic isn’t pretty: House Republicans, Senate Republicans, and Team Trump, over the course of the same week, each faced questions about relying on political assistance from foreign sources, and each of them dodged,” wrote Benen.

Meanwhile, the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, William Evanina, briefed Congress that Russia is again trying to help elect Donald Trump.

Republicans remain mum, particularly Nunes, Johnson and Miller.

Counterintelligence Chief: Russia and Rudy’s Ally Trying to ‘Denigrate’ Biden

William Evanina, the director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, announced in a Friday statement that Russia is “using a range of measures to primarily denigrate” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for being against the Russian “establishment.”

The Daily Beast reported last December that Derkach has been spreading wildly inaccurate allegations—including information he’s claimed could bring down Biden—that are being held up by Giuliani and other figures in President Trump’s orbit.

In an interview with MSNBC’s Zerlina Maxwell (who worked for Clinton’s 2016 campaign), Clinton was asked for what advice would she give Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign to address Russian interference. The question comes shortly after U.S. intelligence officials warned that Russia is once again trying to meddle in America’s elections, and that they and China seem to want President Donald Trump to win re-election.

“When even the Trump administration intelligence officials have to admit that there is so much activity coming from Russia that is designed to help Trump, then you know there’s so much more than they are even telling us,” Clinton said. She continued by referring to senators who’ve been briefed on foreign interference and believe the situation is “so much worse” than what is publicly known.

“I hope the press doesn’t fall for it,” Clinton said. “I hope the press is vigilant and incredibly skeptical about what’s happening online. I hope the press covers the vulnerabilities of our election systems to interference, something that we now know more about than we did right after 2016.”

“I hope that even Republicans will find their patriotism, their conscience, try to force some of the classified information into the public arena so that people have a better idea about what’s going on,” Clinton continued. “And, of course, the Biden campaign and all of the allies it has have to be as vigorous as possible in refuting and rebutting all the disinformation and flat-out lies that we can expect the Russians to be part of ramping up.”

But, the New York Times reports that it was a misleading video deliberately spread by Russia as part of the country’s campaign to interfere in the upcoming U.S. election. Just one bible (possibly a free bible being given out that night by an evangelical group) was used as kindling—alongside other notepads, books, and twigs—to start a fire that was far away from the main part of the protests. The Moms United For Black Lives Matter later tried to put it out. However, Ruptly, a Kremlin-financed video news agency, made the bible clip the focus of its video report on the night and posted several tweets and articles that swiftly went viral.

Russian meddling in the 2020 election is well underway, U.S. intelligence agencies say, and Russia’s new tactic is to publish exaggerated and misleading stories on Russian-backed news sites that will go viral and be picked up by U.S. news sites, thereby appearing legitimate.

Well, Anon, lets think about this.
First, why would Shooter defend any interference in our elections, by anyone?
Or for that matter, why would Shooter want to defend American meddling in foreign elections?

And why would Anon make such an outrageous claim in the first place? Maybe some overcompensation going on their in Anon world?

Shooter will clarify his position on meddling in elections;
1) He does not deny that Russia was trying to influence our 2016 election. The point Shooter has made repeatedly is that we have NO EVIDENCE that Russian meddling changed the outcome of the 2016 election. We in fact have no evidence that a single vote was changed by Russian meddling, or for that matter, changed as a result of meddling by any foreign influence aimed at our elections. Despicable claims that Russia "gave" the election to Trump assumes facts that simply do not exist, and is intended to obscure the fact that Clinton and the DNC gave the election to Trump.

2) Shooter has never supported foreign influence in our elections and has criticized our interference in foreign elections. Despite despicable attempts to deny/justify Obama's interference in Israelis' elections, among others. The fact is, America has been fucking with other countries elections since at least the end of WWII, and we've even actively participated in the overthrow of legitimate governments. It's a bit hypocritical now for despicables to get gum in their hair over foreign government fucking with our elections, don't you think?

3) Despite despicables wet dream wishes, there is no evidence that the Trump campaign, or Trump, or anyone associated with the Trump campaign, cooperated with, solicited, or wanted, foreign influence in the 2016 election. Says so in the Mueller report.

4) We know that President Obama was fully aware of Russian efforts in 2015 and did little to stop it. His claim that he didn't want to influence the outcome rings false; the reality is, he fully expected Clinton to win, and did not want to "taint" the election results. When Trump won, the Russian thingy became the battle cry of butt hurt despicables.

Pompeo threatens Russia with ‘enormous price to pay’ for bounties while Trump still denies them

President Donald Trump still denies that Russia issued bounties on the heads of American soldiers in Afghanistan, but his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, didn’t get the memo.

Speaking to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Pompeo even went so far as to issue a threat to the Trump ally.

“What we’ve said is this: If the Russians are offering money to kill Americans or, for that matter, other Westerners as well, there will be an enormous price to pay,” said Pompeo, as captured by the Washington Post. “That’s what I shared with Foreign Minister [Sergey] Lavrov. When questioned about it again, he again said that he thought it was fake.

“As far as the bounty is concerned: I think it’s a hoax,” the president told Gray Television last month. “I think it’s a Democrat hoax, because good people in intelligence said that they did not think it rose to the level of bringing it to the president. Nobody brought it to me. But they said, ‘It didn’t rise to that level.’”

Pompeo has been cagey about the specifics from the intelligence community.

“I want to be very careful about what’s public record and what’s intelligence-based,” he said. “But yes, I can assure you and the American people that each time I’ve spoken with Foreign Minister Lavrov, I’ve raised all of the issues that put any American interests at risk.”

The Post developed a timeline that outlines Trump’s insistence that the story wasn’t legitimate. It’s a frequent problem in the White House where the president has one message and his administration will say something else. It’s remarkably similar to the way that Trump treated the Russian attack on the U.S. election in 2016.

“The problem is that the two versions are almost impossible to square,” said the Post report. “If this is serious enough for Pompeo to issue a stern warning to Lavrov, it would seem serious enough to bring it to Trump’s attention and for Trump to raise the issue with Putin. If the nation’s top diplomat is putting Russia on notice about something — however substantiated it is by the intelligence — how can it also be a ‘hoax’ or ‘fake news?'”

The frank answer is that it can’t. It was revealed in June that intelligence and White House advisers don’t even tell Trump negative things that Russia has done because he won’t believe it and even if he does, he won’t care anyway.

“That’s a thoroughly unreassuring way to run a country, particularly when it comes to something that could — and intelligence has indicated already has — cost the lives of American troops,” the piece closed.

According to the Los Angeles Times, bipartisan members of the Senate Intelligence Committee called for investigation into members of President Donald Trump’s family and campaign, alleging that their testimony to former special counsel Robert Mueller contradicted the information provided by deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates.

“The letter, a copy of which was reviewed by The Times, was signed by the panel’s then-chairman, Republican Sen. Richard M. Burr, and its ranking Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner,” reported Del Quentin Wilber, Chris Megerian, Sarah Wire, and Jennifer Haberkorn. “It also raised concerns about testimony provided by family members and confidants of President Trump that appeared to contradict information provided by a former deputy campaign chairman to Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III. Those it identified as providing such conflicting testimony were the president’s son Donald Trump Jr., his son-in-law Jared Kushner, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks.”

This letter originally was sent in July 2019, but only recently became available to reporters.

“The committee raised concerns that testimony given to it by the president’s family and advisors contradicted what Rick Gates, the former deputy campaign chairman, told the Special Counsel about when people within the Trump campaign knew about a June 9 meeting at Trump tower with a Russian lawyer,” said the report. “When the meeting became public, Trump Jr. initially claimed it was about Russian adoptions, but emails written by Trump Jr. that were later made public showed he had agreed to the meeting, but because he had been assured that the Russian lawyer had ‘official documents and information’ that would ‘incriminate’ Clinton, the Democratic candidate for president. The email said the information would ‘be very useful to your father.'”

“Gates told the special prosecutor that in the days before the June 9, 2016, meeting, Trump Jr. announced at a ‘regular morning meeting of senior campaign staff and Trump family members that he had a lead on negative information about the Clinton Foundation,’ according to the report of the investigation’s findings,” continued the Times. “Trump Jr., Kushner, Hicks and Manafort denied prior knowledge of the meeting in interviews with the committee, according to the committee’s letter, which offered transcripts as proof.”

Burr has subsequently stepped down from the Intelligence Committee amid a scandal over his stock trades while receiving classified coronavirus briefings. He has maintained he did nothing wrong.

*If you really wanted to hear some howling going up in liberal land you should have heard it when it was announced who would be the Chairman and Ranking member on the Senate Intelligence Committee that would be investigating Trump/Russia. And not because the Chairman was Sen. Richard M. Burr (R-NC). We kind of figured that in advance. Sen Mark Warner (D-VA was also no surprise. No the howls and yowls didn't got up until Warner stepped out and said Burr was a square shooter. And then the howls went up you dumb fuck they always fuck us.

Burr may be a stock swindler. But at least in the workings of his committee he has not stood in the way of the truth or ignored laws. And he had laid down a permanent record. One that directly contradicts all Trump's claims of being the victim of some witch hunt.

Conservative Bush speechwriter David Frum took to Twitter after the release of the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee findings of the Russia investigation. Shockingly, the committee found that there was coordination between the Russians and President Donald Trump’s campaign in 2016.

Frum described it as being “everything but a signed and notarized confession” from Trump.

Former U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance explained that in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, he was bound by evidence that would be admissible in court to reach a conclusion. So, while he couldn’t prove the coordination, “the GOP gave Trump a pass on soliciting, accepting and benefiting from Russian help to win. Fail.”

The chairman of President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign secretly shared campaign information with a Russian intelligence officer, posing a “grave” espionage threat to the United States, a US Senate report said Tuesday.

Before and during his nearly six months on the Trump campaign, Paul Manafort, a veteran Republican political consultant, directly and indirectly communicated with Konstantin Kilimnik, identified as a Russian intelligence officer, and Oleg Deripaska, a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, the Senate Intelligence Committee said.

“On numerous occasions, Manafort sought to secretly share internal campaign information with Kilimnik,” including polling and strategy details, it said.

While the reason for the sharing was not clear, the report said, it noted that it took place just as Russian GRU intelligence and a government-linked social media operation actively sought to tilt the election toward Trump.

Manafort “was secretly communicating with a Russian intelligence officer … while the Russian intelligence operation to assist Trump was ongoing,” the report said.

“Taken as a whole, Manafort’s high-level access and willingness to share information with individuals closely associated with Russian intelligence services, particularly Kilimnik and associates of Oleg Deripaska, represented a grave counterintelligence threat.”

The Senate report, the final product of a three-year investigation into Russian election meddling in 2016, described numerous incidents in which the Trump campaign actively sought the help of Moscow and WikiLeaks to damage the campaign of Trump rival Hillary Clinton.

The report came as US intelligence has warned of active Russian attempts to interfere in the current presidential race in Trump’s favor.

‘Complexity of the threat’
Much of the Senate report repeats the conclusions of the Justice Department special counsel investigation of Robert Mueller.

Mueller outlined numerous contacts between the campaign and Russia, but, because his focus was on whether criminal acts took place, he simply concluded that there were no grounds for charges.

“The special counsel’s inability to ‘establish’ a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia does not convey the breadth and complexity of the threat presented by their actions,” the Senate report says.

Trump has repeatedly denied colluding with or reaping support from Russia, calling investigations a “witch hunt.”

Manafort, who was dropped from the campaign in August 2016, nearly three months before the election, had known Kilimnik and Deripaska for years from his work with them in Ukraine, where he was a political consultant, the report notes.

But it said it had no explanation for his secrecy in transmitting to them internal campaign information.

Manafort was investigated by Mueller and eventually convicted on multiple charges of tax and bank fraud and money laundering related to his Ukraine business, but unrelated to the Trump campaign.

Sentenced last year to seven and a half years in jail, the 71-year-old was released in May to home confinement to protect him from the coronavirus threat.

Trump has repeatedly suggested he could pardon Manafort.
