Uh, yes, according to American law, the average Canadian is a sex offender. If you have sex with someone under 18, it doesn't matter what age you are, in most American states you have committed sexual assault or sexual molestation, or rape. It doesn't matter if she was 16 and willing, and you were 18 and in the same high school she was in, you're a sex offender.

Now try to get a job or an apartment. 20 years from now, try to go to a school play to see your kids.

It's easy (and for some of you, I think it's fun) to get hysterical or macho-sadistic about sex offenders, but the reality is that convicted sex offenders are statistically the least likely to commit a sex crime.

The problem is that you don't take a minute to define what is a sex crime and what isn't, or to consider a reasonable punishment. It's almost as bad as the people who blame all muslims for 9-11.

The age of consent being 16 doesn't mean that the average Canadian is having sex with 16-17 year olds, that makes no sense whatsoever.

Having sex with a 16 year old in one jurisdiction also does not make you a sex offender in another unless you broke the laws of the area you reside in. By law it does not work that way, and the legal definition is all that really matters here.

I could go fuck a 16 year old right now, cross the border into the US, and I wouldn't be considered a sex offender by anyone that matters. Now if I brought a 16 year old with me and fucked her in a state where the age of consent is 18+, maybe...

The absurd applications of the law don't really concern me, I'm sure the VAST majority of people on the sex offender registry deserve to be there.

My arguments have always been about the grey area,s...of if after everything a girl (or boy) still wants to enter into a sexual relationship with another person ( be they 18, 30, 40 etc) what should you do to stop it?

There has been a case in New Zealand were a man had gone to Bali for underage sex. He was arrested, deported and tried in court in New Zealand. He was found guilty of an offence. I cannot remember what it was they charged him with though?

Now I know that there are always exceptions to the rule, but I do think that the sex offender registry laws need to be changed to account for this. There are several states that have added a rider to their sex laws to take into account the 16 to 18 year old situation, but again there needs to be a difference between how a case for someone pissing in public is handled vs how a case here some guy or girl molested a child, raped another, etc.

Right now in the US, there are few laws that allow for the actual posting of what the sex offender was convicted of. That is a big problem because, as shown here, anyone that is a registered sex offender MUST have raped, molested, etc when that is not always the case.

I think you had meant to say that Registered Sex Offenders are the least likely to recommit. That is actually true. The ones who register are working toward trying to reenter society, but they are stopped at nearly every turn. With the current law, a person who had sex with the 16 year old girlfriend when they were 18 (predating the new laws) will still be a sex offender 20 years later. Even with no other offense. Lets look at a person who commits 2nd degree murder...18 years and they are back out without a need to tell everyone that they murdered someone. Now lets think about child abductions, seems like 20 years ago many were found alive, these days most are found dead. Reason? Sentences are lighter if they are unable to prove that you had sex with the victim before killing them. Where is the justice in that?

I feel strongly, and I have 3 kids, that there needs to be the ability for someone who committed certain "sex" crimes to be allowed to come off the registry after they have proven to be responsible and not be a repeat offender. Having a lifetime mark for a single mistake or apse in judgement is not right IMHO.

 

Nobody is claiming that the law is perfect, the kinks will be worked out as time goes on.

This thread was clearly not meant to discuss people that abuse and molest chidren, not urinate in public. The issues with the law do not make the other offenders innocent.

There is also NO rehabilitation for pedophilia, minus chemical castration. Pedophiles and child molesters belong on the registry, they're always a danger to other people.

Agreed. My whole point is the law is seriously flawed and that is why certain offense should come up for review (like indecent exposure, within 3 years of age consensual sex [ie 19 yo with a 16 yo]) and depending on the crime, time passed, criminal history, etc the person could be removed from the sex offender roles. People that rape (not statutory), molest, etc I agree should stay on the roles.

I am also of the mindset, that anyone who fucks with my family will regret it one way or another.

probably not, it seems today, you can become a sex offender for sending a sexually explicit text to the wrong person, pissing outside (sometimes done by people who were drunk), and this did happen to a friend, a girl showed her tits, and asked to see his junk, he did, another dude saw it, became unhappy, called police, and almost got the sexoffender ranking, he hired a lawyer, and kept it at a misdemeanor. keep in mind, the girl showed her tits, the offended party didnt mind that, weird.
