Smoking is not a right by the definition you are using. However it is a legal choice just like drinking. Both are unhealthy, both take lives and both affect people who don't use them.

I think (only my assumption ) that the 30 ft rule helps prevent smoke from entering the non-smoking building every time the door is opened.

Maybe if they ever legalize marijuana in the US and big government realizes the tax benefits, then cigarettes won't be such an issue. In my state the liquor stores are state run even. It does have a lot to do with money.

I don't see why you guys are bashing eachother and trying to find statistics. We all know it's unhealthy, but it is that persons choice if they want to buy a pack of smokes or a bottle of liquor. It may not benefit society, but a lot of things don't that people choose to do.

I have looked up some stats. The US environmental protection agency estimates that passive smoking related lung cancer kills about 3000 people a years in the states. Automobiles kill between 30000 and 40000 people a year.

In most parts of the world there are two legal narcotics, nicotine (cigarettes are simply a nicotine delivery system) and alcohol. We are all free to exercise a choice of whether we indulge or not. Some bars in Amsterdam have chosen to cater for smokers others cater for non-smokers, what is wrong with that?

Congratulations! Sorry I was a bit narky suffering with jet-lag. I can imagine all the ski-related injuries being separated into smokers and non-smokers.

Just around the corner from here is a bar that serves the best margaritas in town.

Well, I don't smoke cigarettes, but I did smoke cigars (gave them up about a year ago). I never smoked them in the house or in any public building. I would always go out to my garage or outside. I fully understand other people not wanting to be around second hand smoke.

I smoke and have since I was 20, However, I do not need a cigarette nor try to smoke outside of restaurants and the like because of the ridicule and hostility non-smokers have toward us. You are right it is hostile here for smokers. So that's why I have programmed myself not to smoke when out in public, for the most part. It is like they are blaming smokers for all of the ills or the world. It is just a damn ciggy people.

 

What bothers me about cigarettes is not so much the second-hand smoke, as the butts that litter the roadsides, the bike trails, the walking trails, the picnic areas, the swamps, you name it. It pisses me off that smokers think that the world is their ashtray.

And the 30ft rule is no damned help whatsoever. Sheesh.

I hear ya ghostwriter.....Thats what gets me, of all the shitty horrible things going on in the world..it,s the little pall of cigarette smoke (that I have diluted down, taking most of the poison into my lungs) that offends them....but you and I know, its not really that, thats not the real problem..and when they get rid of us all..they will turn their minds to others....I used to think it would be alcohol, but am seeing a good groundswell against Obese people.
They will be next, like smokers, they will be easy to recognise and taunt...no need for yellow stars with them!

Huh. And I just had a relevant thought. I just spent a couple weeks in Green Eire, where restaurants and pubs still have ashtrays. The smoke in the air was a novelty. Added to the ambiance. (I suppose it would have bugged me if it had ever been excessive.) But guess what? Few, if any butts on the roadsides! And none whatsoever on trails. Coincidence????
