Iran - Contra was worse, and, you know, an actual scandal.

If you want to talk about "negotiations with terrorists", then Iran Contra is far worse. Thousands of missiles were traded to Iran, under an embargo at the time, in exchange for the release of hostages. The profit from those trades was funneled into ANOTHER terrorist groups pockets, the Contra, who were ALSO embargoed. And if that weren't enough, there's a fair amount of evidence that points to Reagan delaying the release of the hostages for political reasons.

This is what an actual scandal looks like. You wonder why nothing sticks? Because you come up with bullshit. There's a reason why Iran Contra is still in people's minds - it was a scandal. This'll be gone as soon as Fox decides to try a new tactic and the old people get angry about something else.

But go ahead and tell me how Obama's is worse. Or maybe you'll pull " I'm living in the present" again. Or maybe you'll tell me that Iran Contra was actually good, but that'd take some serious mental gymnastics.

The United States faces difficult problems without obvious or easy solutions. It is easier to cast stones at the other side than it is to come up with solutions that may be as painful as the problems.

Yes. For once we agree. (I'll get to it, but first a few points to ROM.)

Now if Resident of Maryland wanted to use Iran-Contra for a "they-did-it-too" argument with respect to the Benghazi mess, that I could see. Both Iran-Contra and Benghazi are gun-running scandals. Both were precipitated in service to partisan uprisings largely through proxies. That parallel kind of makes sense.

The Iran-Contra scandal and the Sergeant Bergdorf scandal have few parallels. Sure, we negotiated with bad guys in both cases, but that's about it. The problem with the Bergdorf scandal isn't that we negotiated with terrorists, and that seems to be what Resident of Maryland is fixated on, for lack of anything of substance. What makes the Bergdorf scandal a scandal is that (1) Obama broke a law that he himself had negotiated just two years ago, and (2) he gave away the store. Five very bad guys, in return for a douchebag who belongs in Leavenworth for life, or better yet, a firing squad.

But now to your point, DL, and why we agree.

There is a saying. War makes strange bedfellows. Look at how FDR and Churchill got into bed with Stalin, to fight Hitler. That sucked. But they held their noses and did it. They had no choice. And we paid a big price, because that alliance paved the way for the Cold War and perpetuated a clash of ideologies that causes trouble to the present day. But it was that or the possibility of annihilation, so they did it.

The Iran-Contra scandal was a big mess. But it had a purpose at the time. Both Iraq and Iran were vying for regional hegemony, and we propped both, to maintain parity between the two, so neither one would gain an upper hand. Was it right? No. It wasn't right. But war sucks.

Benghazi. CIA were in Libya, running guns from Qatar/UAE through Egypt and Libya to Turkey, for smuggling into the war in Syria. That scenario really sucks. But war sucks. And I must say, while I am a staunch critic of both Obama and Hillary Clinton, I don't think I have once criticized that gun-running operation. War sucks. It is what it is. And I wouldn't be calling it a scandal if they hadn't left Chris Stevens for dead. And I wouldn't be calling it a cover-up if they'd just come clean and release the damned autopsy to the dead ambassador's mother.

Lastly, Reagan and Thatcher were not my heroes. I was in diapers for Chrissakes.

But I do get a chuckle out of how the left insists that the guy was a rube. I've read some of his letters. His own letters. He was no rube. And I do look back wistfully on that time, when the leader of this country believed in America Great and America Rising, with so impassioned a conviction that the entire world feared him.

I wonder what that must be like. There has been no one since. Fools and charlatans, all. And the present fool, most of all.

When you go back to the core foundation's of this country, and adhere to the U.S. Constitution, the answers are within that document.The problems that plague this nation, are strictly due to the governments, local, state, and of course the obvious, the federal government.

The individuals that have been chosen to be our representatives have destroyed our nation from within, some destroyed and manipulated with that very intent, for political reasons and for only political reasons, some destroyed and manipulated for financial reasons, and one has destroyed this nation, just to bring us down a notch, because we were to 'big for our britches', and they wanted to to be 'proud of their country for the first time'.

The federal government has far overreached its own purpose, and this nation allowed it to happen, and I doubt that any future elected officials will be able to fix the mess that the previous elected officials placed upon us.

Common sense has left the political arena, and has been replaced by nonsense, academia, emotions, manipulation, greed, power and partisanship, leaving the tax payers to pay for the brunt of all of this.

There are easy solutions to our difficult problems, and if those easy solutions would be applied, 99% of the difficult problems would not be difficult to solve, the public sector (government) is this nations own worst enemy, and the people (private sector) generally and most likely with solve it's own problems, with minimal setbacks.
