If one disapproves of a policy one can always find reasons it will fail. The kinds of alarms raised by Republicans about the Obama health plan were raised by those same fossils about Social Security, unemployment insurance, and Medicare. Now those are programs Republican politicians are afraid to openly condemn because they are so popular with the voters.

Countries that have universal health care get better results with substantially less money than we do. That has been documented thoroughly by many posters on this forum. If the Obama plan fails, it will indicate that Americans are less competent than the fortunate citizens of those countries.

In a recent column George Will, whose intellectual integrity I usually respect, was open about his apprehensions. He did not predict failure for the plan. He said that like other middle class entitlements it would be so successful that it would be, in his words, "addictive," and lead to higher taxes on the rich to support it. What frightens Will pleases me. :excited:

I was hoping that the arguments posted here would eventually move in a more constructive direction but I can see that’s not going to happen. Without picking a side, I’d like to state my opinion and see what you guys think.

1) There are a lot of intelligent arguments on this forum posted by both sides of this issue. The problem is that the insults and inflammatory language that accompany the arguments are self defeating and will never convince anyone.

2) Healthcare reform was necessary and well overdue. The problem is with the way it was done. The progressives have pushed through a very complicated bill filled with special exceptions and payoffs to special interest. The conservatives are complicit in creating this terrible situation because they opposed the Healthcare reform but failed to propose an alternative, thereby reducing their position to that of obstructionist instead of leadership.


3) Health Care Reform has now been passed and there is no point in continuing to argue about it. What we have to do now is reform the reform by fixing the problems as they come up. Let’s see which elements of this bill work and which need to be restructured or eliminated. This is going to require cool heads and analytical thinking.


The last thing I’d like to say is, beware of lawyers and politicians. They are professional debaters for hire to the highest bidder. Remember, no political party or politician can aspire to high office without the help and support of special interest. Therefore, never completely trust or unconditionally support any politician or party.

Politics is not a spectators sport so don’t become a diehard fan of any party. Don’t mold your opinions to suit your party, rather educate yourselves about the issues and only lend support to those politicos whose views closely match your own. And last, and most important of all; don’t ever be afraid to admit that you have made a mistake. If a politician or party does not perform as you expected, vote the bums out.
