I always end up posting in this type of thread, although, I repeatedly tell myself not to....I am just trying to understand what the fuss is about, unless you know otherwise, unless you know the person personally, how the hell can you know what they are thinking or doing by their fantasies alone?....I don't argue against the bans as such, thems the rules....I just don't understand how some people confuse the fantasy and the reality....

I hear you, Mitch. It's just kinda' simple to me. If the rules say you can only drive 55 miles per hour, how fast can you drive? If you go 65 and get caught, then take it like a man and that's that. Whining about others who drive 65 and don't get caught is not a valid argument, it is just whining.

@Eric: not saying some of those themes you highlighted are any less of an issue, except, they haven't been targeted by management. Why isn't the question. Without a direct statement from ownership, all else is speculation. Could simply be a pet peeve of theirs. Could be an economic issue regarding advertisers. Could be a legal issue. Could be other things, and could be a combination of things. Doesn't matter in the end.

You are, of course, free to report any underage stuff that you find. In fact, I bet by high profiling that one thread, you probably doomed it.

In the "for what it is worth, which generally means it ain't worth shit" category, I think the age limit at 16 could have been lowered to 14 without too much squawk, especially these days.

 

It is the right of any individual to think, say, or write what they want; the corrolary is that it is likewise the right on any individual to censor said works from their private space. It is only true "censorship" if those works are being expunged from the public capacity for consumption at their source. That isn't happening here; you're still free to think, say, or write what you want. You just can't do it here. Things like websites, forums, and Facebook pages are often confused with public space; but they are not. They're private, owned by groups or individuals with a stance of their own.

The speed limit comparison is spot on. You can drive as fast as you want in your back yard. Granted, that's a pretty small space to try and pick up speed, but you could always just go build a race track. Can't afford to? Well, that isn't the problem of the people who already have one.

I don't support censorship, but I do support the right of a property owner (in this case a website) to make, interpret, and enforce whatever rules they see fit. If you want to take away the freedom they are allowing to one group of interests because they have applied rules to your own group of interests then you are practicing true censorhsip. And like the dog in Aesop's fable you will have a bad sleep in the trough of straw while the ox goes hungry.

It's maybe more productive to wave the flag for the freedoms some are still allowed as a reason why your freedom should be restored. Saying that they should have their toys taken away too is a bit juvenile and demonstrates an attitude of entitlement, not freedom.

This is, after all, a far less public space than it appears if you take your hand off your sabre and think about it.

 

I don't think it helps to talk about 'rights', because everybody has them. The site owners and the readers and the authors all need each other.

AFAIC I just wish some thinking on the subject, for everybody's mutual benefit.

Pretty much all of us would hate to have harm result from our stories on here.

At the same time, the age of consent in Spain is 13.

And stories about snuff and cannibalism are allowed atm.

The treatment in the story obviously makes a massive difference.

So my view is that a blanket age limit of 16 is too simple, and too conservative. But I get the impression that it's been quietly dropped anyway.
