  2. Hello,

You can now get verified on forum.

The way it's gonna work is that you can send me a PM with a verification picture. The picture has to contain you and forum name on piece of paper or on your body and your username or my username instead of the website name, if you prefer that.

I need to be able to recognize you in that picture. You need to have some pictures of your self in your gallery so I can compare that picture.

Please note that verification is completely optional and it won't give you any extra features or access. You will have a check mark (as I have now, if you want to look) and verification will only mean that you are who you say you are.

You may not use a fake pictures for verification. If you try to verify your account with a fake picture or someone else picture, or just spam me with fake pictures, you will get Banned!

The pictures that you will send me for verification won't be public

Sometimes you just need to jump into the deep water. Did you post here or at sexstories.com? You won't get many comments over there but they do have the voting. You can't let the +/- get you too much.
Some of it is luck, getting noticed quickly that keeps your story nearer the top of the list of new ones. Other times a quick negative can bury it and it won't get a chance to shine. And most people don't vote at all. Of course I'm happy when I see a high score, but what I really like to see is a good number of people (views) reading the story.

Thanks @NCfan You're right about just going for it. I've posted three stories so far and they're all hovering around 90% positive. I can live with that. It would be helpful if people left more comments, especially what they didn't like, but hey, I get it. I'm building my confidence as a writer and find I'm more concerned with my story than votes. Especially after this weird drop in scores of all the 'Latest Stories...'. BTW, @NCfan huge fan. Love your work.

I do get suspicious when the current top stories all have lower than usual scores. Looking at my more recent ones it does seem than there's been an effort to vote down stories. Why people bother, I don't know. I suppose some think it'll get their own noticed. Others may have an ax to grind with the author. I notice that they tend not to vote while signed in. The worst part is that it tends to depress views.

I've noticed the same thing! It's like a squad of trolls got together and down voted all the latest stories. Weird.

I have noticed that most of my negatives come in the first weeks or so of posting. I have to accept that my usual theme will attract some haters who probably take it upon themselves to neg every story that they find threatening. Eventually, with enough votes, a single vote either way won't have the dramatic effect that it does at the outset. It can definitely kill a story, unfortunately. I have a few stories that consistently ride high in the Gay niche and some that I think are just as good which sank without trace and have never climbed out of the cellar. You just have to live with it.

It's wonderful to be back on here, even with the downsides of the voting system. I love seeing different 'generations' of writers and I'm struck by the passion and dedication of the current usual suspects popping up in the writing community of this site. Well done to all writers here.

This new voting system is kind of interesting. Not mad at it. That's all. Carry-on.

Definitely far superior to the older one. I just wished the site incentivized comments on non-forum stories a little more.

Quick question: Does story point of view have an affect on readers enjoyment? Are there any inherent advantages to first person versus third person POV? Do you write primarily in one POV or do you switch it up? Is there anything about a story that makes one POV better than another?
Okay, that was more than one quick question. Sorry.

First-person is great for two things - One, stream-of-consciousness writing (I love having narration being, instead of the boring, "he hesitated, unsure of himself," rather being something like, "Wait. Shit. Could I really do this? Was I just being dumb?" or something).

Two, dramatic irony. It's so fun to write a character in denial or blissfully unaware of an event which is made painfully obvious to the reader. It really highlights intentional dissonance between character and plot, which can be fun to play with.

Third-person is better for specifically wanting the character of the protagonist to be disconnected from the 'character' of the narrator. No matter what, the narrator is always a character with their own bias.

(I wrote this reply from a very character-specific perspective, I hope that's okay.)

I'm thinking about trying to go back and forth with 1st and 3rd. Say one chapter one way then drift next chapter in the other....I cant recall but I'm sure I've read a few books like this.

First person is easier because of the ability to write stream-of-consciousness as BashfulScribe says. It places you right inside someone's thoughts as if they were your thoughts. Third person gives a more detached feel to the story. You're watching the story happen to someone rather than it happening to you, as it were. One is not better than the other, it's all about the feel that you want to create as the writer. My first story I wrote all in 1st person and with my current series I'm using third person limited. It's definitely more of a challenge since I have to change how I structure the story and the scenes. In the end it's just what you find the most useful in telling the story you want to tell.

The voting of these latest stories have been cutthroat. Someone pissed someone off because I've never seen the first page like this. Even the authors that usually write well-written stories are getting the axe.

    Wow!

Yep. I've been saying that for days and asking the mods what's up. It's not normal and not something that could be done with normal voting. And it's killing the site. It's bad enough you can't find author's stories on their page, now they get buried too.

I've been informed that the issue was addressed. Not sure what that means for the scores of recent stories, but going forward hopefully back to normal.

Hi, folks. Some questions for the regular denizens, or anyone else with some insight into this. Is it better to save your work as a Rich Text File (I believe that's the format used by the onsite text editor, right?) instead of, say, MS Word? I ask because I do, in fact, save my stuff as a Word file but when I do the Copy/Paste boogie, the formatting and any italics-highlighted words or phrases go Poof! Does anyone know how to stop that? Adjusting the spacing or what-have-you isn't too big a pain in the butt, but inserting italics is clunky and time-consuming and makes me drink more. Cuss more, too.

Another question I have is why is the word 'description' in stories a no-no? In both of my stories, Unusual Business and the Part 2 of that, I used the word once and, in each instance, it was censored. It's not context related, I'm pretty sure. In neither story did the word have any suggestive or taboo connotations. It's more amusing than pesky, it just makes me curious. Are there other forbidden words/phrases y'all have run across?

Thanks in advance, and Happy Scribbling to ya!

    1. BashfulScribe
Both of these can be answered with the fact that the story submission is code-based. Italics have to be coded in because the story input system isn't synthesizing a file, it's generating the story from code. Sadly, there's no way around it. Because of this system, words that can be conflated with commands are censored. "Script" is one of them, which is why "description" becomes "de*****ion." Otherwise, it would try to execute a command when trying to read the story, since you're technically inputting code. I used to have a list of the words that would get censored by the system, but sadly, it's long gone now (this would be from '14, '15). I did try recently to upload a story with "<3" in it, mimicking someone making a heart over text message, and that caused the story to be cut off right before the "<3" occurred. That was a huge headache to figure out, diagnose, and remove.

I had asked this in a comment but would like to ask for other's thoughts on it.
I'm thinking of writing a short story using 1st person and sometimes switch to 3rd, say maybe a chapter in one and the next chapter in the other...anyone have experience using both persons?

    1. NCfan
That might be a little confusing. How will the reader know what's going on? You can do multiple first person, if you let the reader know, or if it's obvious when the chapter changes who is "speaking". I'm trying to think of something I've read that goes first to third. I imagine it's been done.

There is such a thing as first person omniscient. Maybe that's what you're shooting for?

I looked up, as I thought I had read some stories with 1st and 3rd person pov.
One was Christine by King...I didnt bother looking for others, but I cant imagine a reader couldn't keep up...I mean, not assuming I could manage, but I'd like to try.

      Dearelliot, Apr 14, 2022
    3. NCfan
It's been decades since I read that one. Of course King could probably pull off anything.

And as Illysette said, it's worth trying. One thing to remember, when you are trying something knew with POV. Be careful not to slip back into one or the other. I've found that happening when changing view points. Then having to go back and figure out where i went off course.

I'm personally not a fan of POV swaps inside a story. First person omniscient is a much better tool for that sort of thing. Swapping them in and out messes a lot with the immersion a reader might feel as they will start to empathize with the main character from within that 1st or 3rd person headspace and that will allow them to build the fantasy to achieve the reaction we want. Swapping POV forces all that to reset as they try to re-immerse themselves in the narrative. That's been my experience, anyway. If you need multiple perspectives, stick with first person omniscient or first person limited.

One of the most helpful pieces of advice I was ever blessed with was a reaction to a flowery passage that, at the time, I believed was literary nirvana: "Goof, show us, don't tell us."

Regardless of the POV, if your audience is propelled to desire more, you nailed it. POV is a sophisticated tool that you should experiment with to your heart's delighted content. If it engages your audience, it worked. If not, well, practice makes perfect, right?

Good stuff. Better than usual command of phrasing and word usage. You paint a pretty picture, partner.

This commentary should not make you cringe; in the vernacular of my environs, "Ya done good, Dude." What struck me is something I've posted elsewhere in the Forum, so forgive the redundancy: Tell us don't show us. Use that same creativity to build a 'scene' and not a description. Ex. 'April fingered herself to an astonishing orgasm. vs. "April growled as her pointy, black-tipped nails pierced the coral pink folds of ...'

The other thing I'd offer is, if the writing does not propel your narrative intent forward, more simply, if it's window dressing, consider replacing or removing it. Essentially, tighter editing, with the goal being 'Did this make my audience react? Anticipate? Shrug? Groan? Cum!?'

Overall? Yeah, I'm going to read it again in a bit. Good stuff.

Does anyone know why my story isn't getting published on sexstories? I've posted it over a day ago and it still hasn't shown up in the feed and the status is still in "Edit Mode"

It takes 2-3 days. Longer over weekends. Don't resubmit, you'll be back at the end of the line. All stories go through some kind of automated edit for words, etc that are against the rules.

I was told last week that the spammer issue was resolved and the ratings would correct themselves. I'm not seeing that so I think I'll delete those stories. I'm not sure what that'll do but they're not 74% stories. I've got ideas for a couple of shorter tales, but I don't know if I can trust this site to be fair.

Yeah, my newest story got shitcanned, I presume by spammers. Three negative ratings in the first hour. Three days later, only one more negative, the rest positive. Just not enough to lift me from the 70s%. I agree with NCfan I'm not writing a 77% story, I land consistently in the 90's. It's discouraging, but it is not like I am trying to feed a family with my writing.

I don't want to bother anyone who has explained ad nauseam, but is there somewhere where the new voting system is explained?

As far as I know it's not a new system. Spammers got through and wreaked havoc for a week or more. It seemed they went down the new story list voting negative on pretty much everything.

I've been told the spammers have been weeded out and the effects of their votes should be fixed, but I'm not seeing it.
