Umm... No, I respectfully disagree in that the original purpose of affirmative action was to protect equality for women, blacks, ..., etc. I'm in agreement with you in part, however, as I agree that preferential selection is reverse is discrimination.

You know, Dante - it never changed through the 60s and on. I mean, JKF first actually used the term in 1964 and then in 1965 it was used to ensure that racial discrimination would not exist in voting.

It's always been about eliminating discrimination... Again, it's when you have reverse discrimination and unwarranted preferences that it causes controversy.

 

Change happened in my community about a generation ago when blacks moved in. People started getting mugged, robbed at gunpoint, and so on. It is interesting to talk to white people who remember how safe it used to be. Liberal social reform in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s failed to reduce the crime rate. The only thing that does work is more punishment. I want that punishment to be draconian.

 

It did not exist until 1965. The affirmative action being discussed in this thread is the act passed by LBJ in 1965 which forced companies and universities to higher a certain amount of persons from "underprivileged" groups, even if they were not the best people for the job. And now for universities to take on minority students with scholarships, even if their previous work does not justify it. That was the affirmative action DL was speaking to when he said blacks got special privileges. But having no understanding of the subject, you preceded to tear off on some tangent about "the right to vote" not being a special privilege, which has nothing to do with said affirmative action. Now you continue to rehash your mistake.

What you are speaking of is the term affirmative action found within the civil rights act, you are not actually discussing the act of affirmative action as it appears in society, and in this thread, and I am quite tired of repeating this.

Any american would understand affirmative action simply from growing up in america. You however are from the Ukraine and so it is a relativity new idea to you and so I'll forgive that you've gotten it so very wrong.
