Top Pentagon official under investigation for corruption of power: report

The Pentagon’s chief spokeswoman, Dana White, is under investigation by the Defense Department Office of Inspector General for abusing her power, reported CNN.

White is under investigation after complaints surfaced that she was misusing her support staff. White made employees run her personal errands such as fetching her laundry, running to the pharmacy, get her lunch or snacks, drive her to work, pick up a pair of pantyhose and working on her mortgage paperwork.

She then allegedly retaliated against those who complained about the requests.

“A DoD official may not direct or request subordinates to use official time to perform any activities other than official activities,” the Pentagon ethics standards read.

The inspector general’s office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. White has not been charged at this point.

Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr noted that there is no evidence Sec. Jim Mattis knew about the incident. She told CNN’s Jake Tapper she had witnessed him picking up his own dry cleaning.

GOP groups have spent $1.7 million at Trump properties so far this year: report

Various Republican groups have spent nearly $2 million at President Trump's various properties so far this year, according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings.

A CNN analysis of the first six months of 2018 found that GOP-aligned groups and candidates have spent around $1.7 million at Trump-owned properties as part of official campaign events.

Nearly $1 million of that total came directly from the Republican National Committee (RNC), while Trump's own reelection campaign and two Trump-aligned super PACs are also among the top spenders.

Other Republican groups, including both the House and Senate campaign arms, have spent tens of thousands of dollars at Trump properties as well, according to the filings.

More than $1 million was earned by the Trump Organization at just two properties, the Trump National Doral in Miami, Fla., and Trump's hotel in downtown Washington, D.C.

Trump's private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, known as the "Winter White House," came in third, earning about $330,000 in various expenses from GOP-aligned groups.

The $1.7 million figure was included in an analysis released by McClatchy on Monday that found Republicans have spent a total of more than $5 million at Trump Organization properties since January 1, 2017.

Democrats have not spent any money at Trump Organization properties in that time, the news organization noted.

The Trump administration has faced criticism since the president took office over whether his businesses could present a conflict of interest or an improper use of the government to enrich Trump's private business empire.

The president did not divest from his businesses upon taking office last year, instead placing the Trump Organization into a trust controlled by his sons, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reveals Trump’s three eldest children are at serious risk of criminal charges

As President Donald Trump’s legal exposure for serious crimes has been on display this week, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow took the time to point out Wednesday that he’s not the only member of his family that faces legal risk.

His eldest three children — Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, and Donald Trump Jr. — are all at risk in the ongoing examination of the legally dubious Trump Foundation. (Meanwhile, son-in-law Jared Kushner faces potential exposure in the Russia investigation.)

The foundation, of which all younger Trumps are board members, is already the subject of a massive civil lawsuit from New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood. But as Maddow explained Wednesday, that case could spawn further criminal suits.

“[Underwood] forwards all this evidence that she gathered to the IRS for them to investigate as a potential criminal tax matter,” Maddow explained. “She forwards it to the Federal Election Commission, for them to investigate as a potential set of criminal campaign finance violations. She CC’s it to the Public Integrity Division at the U.S. Justice Department. And within New York state, the state tax department starts investigating that evidence as well — as laid out by Barbara Underwood to see if, in addition to the civil lawsuit, there should be a state criminal referral against the Trump Foundation, and President Trump personally, and each of his three eldest children personally.”

CNN analyst explains how state case against Trump Organization would be ‘nightmare’ that destroys the entire family

On Thursday, the New York Times reported that the Manhattan District Attorney may be eyeing criminal charges against the Trump Organization.

The move could be terrifying for Trump because it would be prosecuted at the state level, where Trump lacks the pardon power that he’s reportedly discussing using to free former campaign manager Paul Manafort.

This development would mark the end of Trump’s longstanding plans for his family business, CNN analyst Michael D’Antonio told host Don Lemon on Thursday.

“This is an organization that has 500 different entities, businessman Donald Trump, before he was president, really specialized in clever engineering, clever financial dealings, in order to fund these enterprises, shift profit around,” he said. “Now, for the first time, it’s all going to be opened up for examination. This is why he didn’t release his tax returns. He didn’t want people to actually have access to the numbers, and we may now have access to the numbers.”

A criminal case against the Trump Organization would open those numbers to prosecutors and eventually an open court.

His financial documents, including his tax returns, could be laid out in front of jurors and the public, the Pulitzer-winning D’Antonio explained.

“This is really his nightmare, “D’Antonio said. “He’s operated as a family business for all these years to avoid scrutiny.”

Depending on how the case went, it could also mark the end of the Trump Organization as it now exists.

“He wanted to hand give this whole enterprise off to his children, and his children spoke to me about how they would run it as a normal business and not be so flagrant in their publicity seeking,” he said. “They may never get the chance.”

Trump was involved in scuttling FBI building across from Trump’s DC Hotel: Inspector General report

The Inspector General of the General Services Administration on Monday released an in-depth report showing President Donald Trump was involved in scuttling plans by the Federal Bureau of Investigation to build a new headquarters.

The president was mentioned over three dozen times in the report.

The Inspector General report found that GSA Administrator Emily Murphy’s testimony before Congress on the scandal, “was incomplete and may have left the misleading impression that she had no discussions with the President or senior White House officials in the decision-making process about the project.”

The Trump administration invoked executive privilege to prevent the inspector general from learning exactly what was said when President Trump allegedly intervened in the rebuilding process.

The FBI plan would have created a large construction zone across the street from Trump’s luxury DC hotel.

The investigation was initiated by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the Vice Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

“This IG report demonstrates that Administration officials obscured the White House’s involvement in the FBI headquarters project,” Connolly concluded.

“When we began this investigation, the prospect that President Trump was personally involved in the government-led redevelopment of a property in close proximity to the Trump Hotel was dismissed as a conspiracy theory,” he added. “Now, the president’s involvement in this multi-billion-dollar government procurement which will directly impact his bottom line has been confirmed by the White House Press Secretary and government photographs.”

Connolly also urged further investigation.

“This IG report is only the beginning. We must develop a comprehensive understanding of the President’s involvement in this procurement and what it has cost the United States in terms of both national security and taxpayer dollars. I am calling on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee to convene immediate hearings on this matter and to subpoena any GSA officials who are suspected of misleading Congress,” he demanded.

REVEALED: Rudy Giuliani is still being paid to lobby foreign governments — even as he serves as Trump’s lawyer

Rudy Giuliani, who works as the personal attorney to President Donald Trump, is still being paid to lobby foreign governments.

Politico reports that Giuliani just last week sent a letter to Romanian President Klaus Iohannis that attacked his government’s attempts to crack down on corruption in his country.

Specifically, Giuliani assailed Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), which he accused of committing “intimidation of judges, defense lawyers, and witnesses; unconstitutional phone tapping; forced confessions; and, unfair judicial processes.”

Giuliani’s letter attacking the anti-corruption efforts directly contradicts the U.S. State Department’s official position on the initiative.

Giuliani says that he wrote the letter at the behest of a lobbying organization called Freeh Group International Solutions, which he says paid him a fee to write it. And while Giuliani did not indicate anywhere in the letter that he was writing on behalf of the president, he also did not disclose that he was writing the letter on behalf of a paying client.

“It is highly unusual, to say the least, for an American lawyer to write the president of a foreign nation to offer advice on that nation’s anticorruption efforts, [but] to do so without identifying the client or clients on whose behalf he is writing is astonishing,” William Jeffress Jr, an attorney at the firm Baker Botts, told Politico.

WH Counsel’s Office Intervened To Keep GSA Officials Quiet On Details Of Trump Meeting

The White House Counsel’s Office intervened to prevent General Services Administration officials from disclosing details about a meeting with President Donald Trump regarding the FBI’s years-long quest for a new building.

The General Services Administration’s inspector general’s office described the intervention in a report Monday.

Introducing its report, the GSA IG’s office wrote that “some GSA witnesses refused to answer any questions” about GSA Administrator Emily Murphy’s meeting with the President in January of this year, “and some of those said they were told or believed the information was subject to executive privilege.”

“We sought to determine whether GSA took the position that executive privilege precluded sharing information with the OIG, which is part of GSA and within the Executive Branch,” the report continued. “Ultimately, GSA’s Acting General Counsel informed us that he received direction from White House Counsel’s Office regarding the matter.”

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), the vice ranking member of the House Oversight Committee who requested an investigation into the FBI’s tumultuous building procurement process in February, said the report “substantiates my concerns” that Trump was improperly involved.

It started last summer, when the General Services Administration ditched its long-held plans to re-locate the FBI from downtown Washington, D.C. to one of three locations in Virginia or Maryland. People — across partisan, state, and professional lines — got pretty mad.

The Washington Post reported at the time: “The FBI is not the only loser in this outcome. It’s joined by state officials, county officials, real estate developers, architects and engineers, and of course, taxpayers.” Attention turned to the President: The GSA is the landlord of his company’s hotel in D.C., which itself is steps away from the FBI’s current home, the J. Edgar Hoover Building. In July of this year, in fact, Axios reported that Trump said the FBI “needs to stay” at its current address, which he reportedly called “prime real estate.”

The IG report found that not only was Trump involved — both according to the White House and “GSA emails and photographs” that confirmed the January meeting — but also that the GSA administrator’s testimony to Congress on the matter “was incomplete and may have left the misleading impression that she had no discussions with White House officials in the decisionmaking process about the project.” (The GSA and Murphy’s personal legal representation dispute that.)

In addition, the report found that the GSA incorrectly said the plan to “raze and rebuild” in D.C. would be cheaper than its original plan of finding space in the suburbs. In fact, the IG report said, “we found that GSA did not include all of the costs in its analysis, and that the [J. Edgar Hoover Building] demolish and rebuild plan would actually be more costly.”

On Wednesday night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow revealed that not only is Donald Trump’s “outside ethics advisor” accused of money laundering — he’s in the running to be the next attorney general or White House counsel.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that multiple figures in the president’s orbit are being investigated by the Justice Department for potentially taking laundered money from the largest embezzlement scandal in human history.

Maddow pointed out that Bobby Burchfield, the lawyer representing the alleged Malaysian embezzler Jho Low, serves as the Trump Organization’s outside ethics adviser.

Burchfield was hired when “when the president decided he wasn’t going to give up his business and form a trust,” the host noted.

“‘Don’t worry, we’re hiring an outside ethics adviser to make sure everything is squeaky clean for me to be the first president in modern history to retain his business interests while still serving as president,'” she said, imitating the president’s train of thought. “‘We have an outside adviser. Rest assured, there will be no funny money sliding through anywhere, nothing the least bit smelly in this unclean office fridge, everything will be fine.'”

Maddow went on to note that according to Bloomberg News, Burchfield is one of the candidates being considered to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions or White House counsel Don McGahn.

Trump attacks Jeff Sessions for not forcing the Justice Department to ignore Republican crimes

President Donald Trump on Monday publicly criticized his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions, for allowing Republican congressmen to be indicted for alleged criminal behavior.

“Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department. Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff…” Trump tweeted.

The president was apparently referring to Congressmen Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and Chris Collins (R-NY). Hunter was charged with illegally using campaign funds to pay personal expenses while Collins was charged with taking part in an insider trading scheme.

“….The Democrats, none of whom voted for Jeff Sessions, must love him now. Same thing with Lyin’ James Comey. The Dems all hated him, wanted him out, thought he was disgusting – UNTIL I FIRED HIM! Trump’s FEMA Administrator Brock Long Investigated Over Use of Official Cars

Brock Long—the chief disaster official for Hurricane Florence and administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency—is under investigation for alleged misuse of official cars, Politico reports. The Department of Homeland Security inspector general is looking into accusations that Long misused government vehicles during his six-hour commutes to North Carolina from Washington. If found to have wrongly used taxpayers’ cash for his travel, he would be the just the latest of current and former top Trump administration officials to fall foul of the rules. The IG is investigating whether Long misused government resources and personnel on trips back home to Hickory, North Carolina, on weekends, according to two unnamed officials. One of the vehicles—a black Suburban—was reportedly involved in an accident, sparking the IG’s interest.

Trump’s Romania ambassador pick was sued for sexual harassment — and the White House probably knew about it

A Trump administration ambassador nominee was sued for sexual harassment by his secretary at his old law firm.

The New York Law Journal reported that Adrian Zuckerman was sued in 2008 by his former secretary Jamie Ferrauiola when he was a partner at the Lowenstein Sandler law firm.

According to the suit, Zuckerman forced Ferrauiola to look at photos of “semi-nude women,” asked for “updates” on her love life and for dating advice, “frequently made sexual gestures” about women in the office, made aggressive advances and told co-workers that she was pregnant with his child.

An attorney “familiar with the Trump administration’s nominations process” told the Law Journal that the White House likely knew of the suit, which was settled in less than a year for an undisclosed amount.

Nominees who require Senate confirmation undergo a “two-track clearance process” that includes “an ethics analysis and a deep investigation of the person’s fitness for the position,” the report continued. According to the attorney who spoke to the Law Journal, “harassment issues could be disqualifying, but allegations are not presumed to be true.”

“The fact that this nomination was announced means this analysis was done and he survived,” the attorney added.

The Romanian-born Zuckerman was nominated by the Trump administration in late July of 2018. Along with his partner positions at Seyfarth Shaw and Lowenstein Sadler, the attorney also worked at the Epstein Becker & Green firm and was an arbitrator at the Real Estate Board of New York.

‘Walking conflict of interest’ Deputy Interior Secretary creates ethical headaches for the agency
David Bernhardt advised to cancel speech on water issues in Colorado.

The No. 2 official at the Department of the Interior canceled plans to speak at a water industry forum in Colorado after department ethics officials concluded his appearance at the event could raise conflicts-of-interest concerns.

Deputy Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, a former industry lobbyist described as a “walking conflict of interest,” notified the Colorado River District that he could not give his scheduled keynote speech on Friday at the district’s water forum in Grand Junction, Colorado.

After consulting with the Interior’s ethics office, Bernhardt “had to decline our invitation due to an abundance of concern for an appearance of conflict of interest,” Chris Treese external affairs manager for the Colorado River District, told The Daily Sentinel.

The ethics office determined the event’s focus on “interstate Colorado River issues” could be perceived as a conflict with Bernhardt’s previous employment with Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, a law and lobbying firm, the newspaper reported Thursday.

Bernhardt, who ran the natural resources department at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, has spent the last several years working on behalf of oil and gas companies, water districts, and large agribusiness to weaken environmental protections.

Bernhardt’s former law firm appears on his list of ethics recusals. The firm represents the Colorado River Energy Distributors Association and the Central Arizona Water Conservation District, entities that both have a potential interest in actions taken by the Colorado River District.

The Colorado River District , officially known as the Colorado River Water Conservation District, is a public water planning and policy agency for the state of Colorado created in 1937.

The Interior Department had not responded to a request for comment from ThinkProgress at the time this article was published.

As a former industry lobbyist, Bernhardt is running into potential conflicts of interest on a regular basis. On Monday, Bernhardt spoke at the conservative Heritage Foundation about weakening the Endangered Species Act, a policy change that would benefit many of his former clients. As a lobbyist, for instance, he represented Westlands Water District, a California water district that sought to weaken the Endangered Species Act.

“If Deputy Secretary Bernhardt doesn’t even know what events he can commit to without violating ethics rules, then he can’t be trusted to run an agency that does business with a host of his former clients who stand to potentially benefit from his decisions,” Western Values Project Executive Director Chris Saeger said Thursday in a statement. “It appears that Deputy Secretary Bernhardt is so deep in the swamp he doesn’t even know where it starts or ends.”

The Western Values Project, based in Whitefish, Montana, is a nonprofit group that focuses on protecting the environment and defending public lands in the western United States.

In February, the Western Values Project released an analysis of documents obtained through public records requests that found Bernhardt’s former client, the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), frequently communicated with Interior officials conducting a review of the Interior Department’s sage grouse policy. IPAA officials offered suggestions for the outcome of the sage grouse review, according to the Western Values Project.

In March, IPAA thanked Bernhardt for his action as deputy secretary that benefited the oil and gas industry.

Then in July, the Western Values Project filed a lawsuit contending the Interior Department has refused to hand over internal documents that may help explain why Bernhardt’s former lobbying clients received regulatory and policy decisions in their favor.

The group has been seeking information on whether Bernhardt has complied with ethics requirements, including a pledge he made to recuse himself from working on matters involving his former lobbyist clients.
