Trump EPA appointee Trey Glenn indicted on Alabama ethics charges

An administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency was indicted this week on ethics charges in Alabama.

AL.com reported that Trey Glenn, administrator for Region 4 of the EPA, was charged with “soliciting a thing of value from a principal, lobbyist or subordinate, and receiving money in addition [to] that received in one’s official capacity.”

The charges date back to Glenn’s work with a Birmingham client to stop EPA cleanup efforts in neighborhoods in north Birmingham and Tarrant.

The Alabama Ethics Commission also indicted former Alabama Environmental Management Commissioner Scott Phillips on the same charges.

“Under Alabama ethics law, it is illegal for a lobbyist or a lobbyist’s client, called a principal, to give a public official a thing of value, including a job,” AL.com noted.

Trump appointed Glenn to be Region 4 administrator in 2017. In 2008, Glenn had another a brush with the Alabama Ethics Commission after a complaint. But a grand jury decided not to indict him on the 2008 charges.

‘Hurting tens of thousands of borrowers’: Betsy DeVos sued for allegedly refusing to follow court order

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is being sued for refusing to follow a judge’s order to implement Obama-era regulations. The lawsuit claims DeVos was required to “discharge,” or stop collecting on loans of students who attended for-profit schools and colleges if the institution or their campus had shut down, as The Hill reports.

“It has been nearly two years since these rules should have taken effect, and Secretary DeVos is still dragging her feet and hurting tens of thousands of borrowers through her inaction,” National Student Legal Defense Network (NSLDN) President Aaron Ament said in a statement.

“The students we are trying to help have been doubly victimized – first by the for-profit colleges that deceived them, and now by the federal government that refuses to help.”

The lawsuit says the Education Dept. continues to collect on debts the students should not owe.

The Hill adds that a federal court in October “ruled that the Obama-era debt regulations had to be implemented after over a year of delays by DeVos.”

The Washington Post notes that Secretary DeVos “said that the rule made it too easy for students to cancel their debts and that she intended to replace it with her own version to take effect next year.”

In August the LA Times Editorial Board charged that DeVos “sides with predatory for-profit colleges over America’s students.”

Stunning investigation reveals how HUD residents are forced to live in squalor under Ben Carson’s leadership

After Ben Carson was named to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, housing advocates warned Carson would run the agency like a slumlord — and a new report by NBC’s Stephanie Gosk indicates they were right.

The investigation took viewers to a public housing project in Hartford Connecticut, where residents deal with mold, rodent and vermin infestations, and ceiling collapses that have gone unrepaired. Meanwhile taxpayers have paid the building’s owner “nearly a million and a half dollars” over the past two years. The report also found more than 1,000 public housing properties across the country receiving failing grades, forcing 40,000 families, who depend on Carson’s leadership at HUD, to live in squalor.

In one clip, HUD inspectors recorded by a tenant can be heard complaining that “the system is broken.” Another says that he has 432 properties to manage in Connecticut, and only five staff members with which to do so. Meanwhile, Gosk noted that “under housing secretary Ben Carson, HUD has shed more than 480 staff out of 8,000,” while housing activists complained the agency “does not have a firm grip on what’s happening on the ground.”

Earlier this year, Carson supported President Trump’s proposed $8.8 billion cut to the agency, and proposed tripling rents for residents. But if viewers expected him to weigh in on the scandal, they would be disappointed.

“Secretary Carson declined to be interviewed,” said Gosk, although an anonymous spokeperson said *“the secretary believes very deeply that families should not be forced to live in housing that’s unsafe, and taxpayers shouldn’t be subsidizing it.”

*Bullshit. If Carson actually believed that he would be making the slumlords fix the problems instead of just keep giving them millions of tax dollars to do nothing. As the report documents the violations keep filing up and all HUD is give the slumlords more "extensions."

U.S. taxpayers incurred a cost of nearly $100,000 for a lavish trip Donald Trump Jr. took to India in February to promote his family’s luxury condominium projects, The Washington Post reports. The trip cost more than $97,805 for hotel rooms, airfare, car rental, and overtime for Secret Service agents, according to 47 pages of purchase orders, requisition forms, and planning work sheets released by the Department of Homeland Security in response to a Freedom of Information request. Since President Trump has not placed his assets in a blind trust—as previous presidents have done—he still has effective control over the Trump real-estate empire, and therefore benefits from his children’s travels.

While in India, Secret Service agents crisscrossed the country following Trump Jr. as he walked the red carpet, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a high-rise overlooking the Arabian Sea in Mumbai, hosted champagne dinners for buyers, and had a private meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The high cost of this, and similar trips to promote Trump’s brand overseas, has received intense criticism from domestic watchdog groups as well as on Capitol Hill.

The protection was granted in February 2017, a few days after DeVos was blocked by a handful of protesting parents and teachers from entering a school in Washington, D.C. “The order was issued after the Department of Education contacted administration officials regarding threats received by the secretary of Education,” the Justice Department said in a statement. The cost of the security was $5.3 million in fiscal year 2017 and $6.8 million for fiscal year 2018, according to the U.S. Marshals Service. ‘Illegal, Unheard of, Highly Suspicious’: Where Is Matthew Whitaker’s Financial Disclosure Form?

Inquiring minds want to know what acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker (or the Department of Justice) is hiding when it comes to his financial disclosure form.

American Oversight, a non-partisan, nonprofit ethics watchdog that calls itself the “top Freedom of Information Act litigator investigating the Trump administration,” sent a letter on Friday to Office of Government Ethics “regarding DOJ’s failure to share acting Attorney General Whitaker financial disclosures with the public.”

The letter expressed concern that the DOJ “is not making available to the public in a timely fashion any public financial disclosure reports filed by Matthew Whitaker.”

They blasted this letter out on Twitter and said, “Appointees have 30 days to file their financial disclosures once assuming the position. Whitaker has been working at DOJ since October 2017 and there’s no way to tell if he has financial conflicts.”

The group went on to say that Whitaker, who was appointed as former Attorney General Jeff Sessions chief of staff, would have been required to file a public financial disclosure form months ago.

“Matthew Whitaker was reportedly appointed Chief of Staff to Attorney General Jeff Sessions on October 4, 2017. As a non-career Senior Executive Service appointee at the Department of Justice, Mr. Whitaker is a required public filer. Consequently, the latest possible deadline for him to file the required public financial disclosure, assuming he received two extensions for good cause shown, was February 1, 2018,” the letter said. “As an incumbent of more than 60 days in a covered position, Mr. Whitaker was also required to file an additional annual public financial disclosure report by May 15, 2018, again with two possible 45-day extensions, so at most no later than August 13, 2018.”

Attorney and former director of the United States Office of Government Ethics Walter Shaub led the charge on Twitter, saying that “This is an outrage.”

“DOJ’s refusing to release Whitaker’s financial disclosure form is illegal, unheard of and highly suspicious. What is DOJ hiding?” Shaub asked. “Bear in mind that DOJ is legally required to release these reports no later than 30 days after their filing — whether or not DOJ has finished reviewing them.”

“This means either Whitaker failed to file (illegal) or DOJ is determined to hide them from you (illegal),” he claimed.

Former acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal simply said, “Seems sketch.”

Weekly Standard editor at large Bill Kristol jumped in to say, “Here’s information on OGE Form 278e, the financial disclosure form senior U.S. government officials fill out, and which is then publicly available. Senior officials, political and career, comply with this law, as they are obliged to. But not Matt Whitaker?”

Aside from his comments about special counsel Robert Mueller‘s Russia investigation, Whitaker’s finances have drawn scrutiny, given his past association with World Patent Marketing, an alleged “scam” firm he worked for in an advisory role. Meanwhile, others continue to debate whether or not his appointment as acting AG was legal.

One thing about those pesky financial disclosure forms;
The law says they must be filed at least annually.
Very few elected or appointed officials file those forms on anything like a timely fashion.
Most members of Congress (whether despicable or deplorable) have yet to even file their 2016 forms.

BUSTED: Ivanka Trump used personal email account for government business

First daughter and senior White House advisor Ivanka Trump used a personal email account for government business, The Washington Post reported Monday.

“Ivanka Trump sent hundreds of emails last year to White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistants using a personal account, many of them in violation of federal records rules, according to people familiar with a White House examination of her correspondence,” The Post reported.

“Some aides were startled by the volume of Ivanka Trump’s personal emails — and taken aback by her response when questioned about the practice. Trump said she was not familiar with some details of the rules, according to people with knowledge of her reaction,” they added.

Abbe Lowell, Ivanka’s personally attorney, issued a statement through his spokesperson, Peter Mirijanian.

“While transitioning into government, after she was given an official account but until the White House provided her the same guidance they had given others who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her personal account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family,” he claimed.

The emails were uncovered via a public records request filed by liberal watchdog group American Oversight.

During the 2016, Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server for official work was one of the defining issues.

At rally after rally, Trump supporters would chant, “lock her up” to demand Clinton be jailed for the practice.

“There’s the obvious hypocrisy that her father ran on the misuse of personal email as a central tenet of his campaign,” American Oversight executive director Austin Evers said.

“There is no reasonable suggestion that she didn’t know better,” Evers noted.

When Trump’s daughter began working in the White House, she pledged to comply “with all ethics rules.”

The Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. brought in about $3.9 million for Ivanka Trump last year, who holds a large stake in the Trump Organization’s hotel business, according to a newly released financial disclosure reported by Politico on Tuesday.

The hotel is an unofficial front door to the White House, located just down Pennsylvania Ave, and frequented by diplomats, Trump business associates, economic leaders, political associates and more.

The question of how the Trump family is benefiting financially on the basis of their roles in government has come up many times. Late last year, a judge dismissed two lawsuits claiming that the President was in violation of the Emoluments Clause of the constitution. One, brought by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, specifically cited his hotel businesses.

Politico’s report Tuesday also outlined income Ivanka Trump earned from her personal brand, as well as her book. The disclosures also cover income by Jared Kushner and even National Security Advisor John Bolton.

The Trump Organization discussed giving Russian President Vladimir Putin the $50 million penthouse in Trump Tower Moscow while in talks about the real estate deal — while Donald Trump was running for president.

Based on discussions with U.S. law enforcement officials, BuzzFeed reported that Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen discussed the plan with a representative for Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

News of the proposal came after Cohen reached a guilty plea with special counsel Robert Mueller, the heart of which regards the scrapped Trump Tower Moscow deal and false statements he made to Congress about it.
