Rep. Miller-Meeks asks Congress to drop Dem challenger complaint

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks has asked Congress to dismiss a complaint put forward by her Democrat challenger over the 2020 election.

The Iowa Republican’s lawyer, Alan Ostergren, filed a petition to the House Thursday, requesting the certified results be accepted. This came after Miller-Meeks won the race by just six votes.

Her challenger, Rita Hart, has argued there are at least 22 votes left to be counted, which would tip the scale back in her favor.

However, Miller-Meeks’ attorney said Hart failed to bring the challenge up in Iowa courts before Congress.


“The fact that they were not willing to go to court to put up their proof shows all you need to know about how weak their case is,” Ostergren stated.

The motions from both parties will be reviewed by the House Administration Committee. If they choose to move forward with the case, the decision could come down to a vote in the House, which holds a Democrat majority.

 

This was just fucking hilarious. Chuck Schumer was being interviewed by Rachel Maddow and said the could no longer tolerate Moscow Mitch's obstruction on power sharing agreement and they would have to resort to more dramatic solutions. Meaning he was going to try and nuke the filibuster. And Schumer was on camera when Maddow announced the breaking news Moscow Mitch had issued a statement he was withdrawing all objections to the power sharing agreement.

Tensions reportedly rise between Sen. Schumer, Gov. Cuomo

Tensions are reportedly on the rise between Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.). According to a New York Post article on Sunday, the two have a “working relationship at best.”

A Democrat insider reported “there was enormous tension” between Schumer and Cuomo in the spring over major coronavirus legislation.


Gov. Cuomo even threatened to sue the federal government after claiming stimulus legislation, which Schumer took large part in constructing, did not do enough for New York.


“If Washington doesn’t provide the New York state with our fair share of funding, we’re going to pursue litigation because I cannot in good faith represent the people of this state and know that they are being harmed, ” stated the democrat governor. “And know that they are being treated unfairly.”

With Sen. Schumer shifting seats to the Senate Majority Leader, however, he may now work harder to appease the governor.

 

When is the last time you've seen anyone in conservative/Republican leadership hold a press conference and take questions? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds them all the time and just spent about 20 minutes updating and answering questions.

Speaker Pelosi said right now one of the biggest priorities is getting the COVID 19 relief bill passed and they are hoping for bi-partisan support but just in case she has instructed the committees to prepare a second path to get the bill passed through reconciliation.

Pelosi said she also just met with Gen Russel Honore who is in charge of reviewing security and the attempted coup and both of them agreed they must deal with the "enemy within" so members feel secure and don't have to be in fear of other members that have not only threatened to kill other members but even trying to bring guns onto the House floor. Pelosi said it is too premature to announce what they intend to do but Gen Honore expressed a sense of urgency to deal with the threats of far right extremists in congress and implement several new security measures.

On impeachment Speaker Pelosi said she is quite proud of the progress the House Managers have made so far and that they will have no problem at all proving Trump recruited, organized, and incited his domestic terrorists to commit sedition, insurrection, and a violent attempted coup to overthrow the government of the United States of America.

 

"What I'm concerned about is the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives who was willing to overlook and ignore those statements, assigning her to the Education Committee when she has mocked the killing of little children at Sandy Hook Elementary School," she practically spat. "When she has mocked the killing of teenagers in high school at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. What could they be thinking? Or is thinking too generous a word for what they might be doing?" Pelosi continued.

Nancy Pelosi made some stock purchases last month that are raising eyebrows — and questions — about the ethics of Congresspeople buying and selling stocks. In December, Rep. Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, purchased 25 call options of Tesla stocks, along with a few other stock purchases. Why does this matter? Because under the Biden administration’s new agenda, with its focus on environmental protections and combating climate change, Pelosi could benefit financially from those political plans.

President Joe Biden is currently encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles, and that could mean lifting the cap on sales, providing tax credits to buyers, and a potential program incentivizing people to trade in used vehicles to buy an electric one. Biden also announced on Monday that he would be replacing the entire fleet of 645,000 federal vehicles with electric ones. This could create a conflict of interest, as part of Pelosi’s job will include working to pass these environmental and clean energy initiatives — initiatives from which her family now stands to profit handsomely.

Questions of whether it’s ethical for members of Congress to buy and sell stock are not new. Last year, former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler was accused of insider trading and profiting off the coronavirus pandemic when she sold between $1.275 million and $3.1 million in stocks right after being briefed in January 2020 about the seriousness of the virus. In June of 2020, the investigation was dismissed by a Senate ethics panel. And since then, Loeffler lost her seat in the Senate to Democrat Raphael Warnock.

Another former Georgia Senator, David Perdue, was also criticized for potentially unethical stock purchases during the six years he spent in Congress. The Republican was investigated by the Justice Department for his stock market activity, though no wrongdoing was found (he, too, lost his recent re-election campaign to a Democrat, Jon Ossoff).

In the past, there has been legislation aimed at combating this. The STOCK Act, passed after the 2008 financial crisis, attempted to stop insider trading by making it illegal for government officials to trade stocks after receiving material or nonpublic information “derived” from their jobs, or information that they received while performing their jobs. In light of the Loeffler and Perdue activity, that bill has been re-examined and some people have argued it did not go far enough.

• Funding for crucial investments in broadband and distance learning and relief for Amtrak and the aviation sector struggling with declining revenues and volumes due to COVID-19.
• provide flexible, targeted assistance to state, local, Tribal, territorial and the District of Columbia governments, as well as those individuals hit hardest by the pandemic.
• Critical funding for the Indian Health Service, Administration for Native Americans, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education and emic on Native communities.Native American housing programs to maintain essential health, education and social services and mitigate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pand
• Funding to the Economic Development Administration and environmental justice grants
• Funding for critical programs to aid in the global response to and recovery from the pandemic. These instructions include significant funding for humanitarian assistance and Global Health programs.

These two program items are not needed, and in the case of unemployment we learned that most of the bonus payments ended up with fraudsters and criminals filing fake claims. What, they think it won't happen again? In California, the best estimates are that somewhere between $11 BILLION and $30 BILLION was fraudulent claims that will never be recovered.
