‘It Was Surreal’: Ex-Governor Says Trump ‘Floored Me’ With Comment About Striking First In a Nuclear War

Former President Donald Trump stunned then-Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rosselló in 2017 while touring the island in the wake of Category 5 Hurricane Maria, which killed thousands and decimated the island’s infrastructure.

Rosselló wrote about his conversations with Trump during the visit, which had many viral moments – including Trump throwing desperately needed supplies at hurricane survivors. The Hill received an excerpt of Rosselló’s new book, out this week, in which the governor says that Trump spoke to him about the prospect of nuclear war and his readiness to press the button first.

Rosselló quotes Trump as saying, “Nature has a way of coming back,” while flying over devastated areas of the island. “Well, it does until it does not. Who knows with nuclear warfare what will happen,” Trump added, according to Rosselló in “The Reformer’s Dilemma.” Rosselló added:

“And then, he said the one thing that made me more concerned than anything else in the entire visit. ‘But I tell you what…’ He paused for effect. ‘If nuclear war happens, we won’t be second in line pressing the button.’ This statement floored me. I could not believe what I was hearing. It was surreal. Was he really talking about total annihilation as we flew over the ravaged sights of the island?”

Trump has long focused on nuclear war and recently told Fox News it’s top of his mind as the biggest threat to humanity. “But this is the big threat. I watched Biden the other night. It’s the greatest existential — he loves that word because it’s a big word and he thinks — you know, he thinks — he knows — he doesn’t even know what the hell the word means. He goes, it’s the greatest existential threat to our country, global warming. In the meantime, you’ve got these maniacs with nuclear weapons that can do damage which I won’t even talk to you about,” Trump said.

Trump's nuke comments are more evidence of his 'mental instability': MSNBC guest

On Friday morning, the entire panel on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" expressed dismay at an anecdote in an upcoming book from Puerto Rico's former governor that Donald Trump glibly talked about using nukes during a conversation in 2017.

In Ricardo Rosselló's book The Reformer’s Dilemma, the former governor described "surveying damage done to the island after Hurricane Maria with the former president when Trump commented, 'But I tell you what … If nuclear war happens, we won’t be second in line pressing the button.'"

Reacting to the report, the Washington Post's Eugene Robinson pointed out that presidents "have the nuclear suitcase trailing you around, and you can push the button and I think, when we talk about this, I think people need to realize, that you know, you're entrusting this vast power to one of these two men. Now you could argue that, well, both have successfully managed not to get us into nuclear wars during their presidential terms. Nonetheless, it does focus you on the stability and frankly the sanity of the two candidates."

Using that as a leaping-off point, MSNBC political analyst Elise Jordan contributed, "This is a continuation of Trump's fascination with nuclear power. He's long fancied himself to be some nuclear specialist because he had an uncle who was some kind of scientist at MIT, and he's talked about it since the '80s and he's bragged — you know he's scared countless journalists in the run-up to the election."

"He seems to have a little bit of understanding that it causes widespread decimation and destruction, but he still just really doesn't grasp that," she continued. "And it shows his fundamental instability and that he is crazy which is what voters judge him on versus Biden and his age."

'Forgetful': Author who interviewed Trump 'at his lowest' says ex-president is 'declining'

The author of a new book about Donald Trump reportedly says that the multiple exclusive interviews the two took part in reveal that the former president is "declining."

The new book, "Apprentice in Wonderland" by Ramin Setoodeh, tells some of the stories of the conversations with Trump. Recently the author gave tapes of the Trump interviews to MSNBC's Nicolle Wallace, ultimately revealing a moment when the ex-president accidentally admitted that he lost the 2020 election.

Setoodeh said Trump was excited to be interviewed about The Apprentice, but he was still licking his wounds from the 2020 electoral defeat, according to a report from the Times. Trump was said to be "at his lowest," according to the author.

"Mr. Trump became so excited about the book that he offered to promote it at his rallies, saying that the merchants who follow his traveling roadshow would help peddle it. 'You’ll sell 10,000 books at one rally,' he told Mr. Setoodeh. 'Let’s see how this works out,'" the Saturday report reads. "Not well, as it turns out — at least for Mr. Trump. 'Apprentice in Wonderland,' published Tuesday, depicts its subject as a lonely and sometimes dotty man, longing for the days when he was still accepted by his fellow celebrities, even as he seems to crave political power."

The author further suggests that in "one minute he’s bragging that Joan Rivers voted for him in 2016 (she died in 2014); the next he’s excusing himself to go deal with 'the whole thing with the Afghanistan,' as he told Mr. Setoodeh, who happened to be interviewing him the week President Biden was pulling U.S. troops out of the country."

"It was unclear what Mr. Trump meant," the article states.

The author also said the interviews raised cognitive questions, including because Trump reportedly forgot the first interview.

"Mr. Setoodeh spent three afternoons at Trump Tower and one at Mar-a-Lago, and interviewed Mr. Trump twice on the phone. His final visit was in November of last year. He came away believing Mr. Trump, now 78, was declining, he said," according to the Times piece. "'Trump was certainly much sharper when he was in his 60s hosting ‘The Apprentice,’ and he did struggle with short-term memory,' Mr. Setoodeh said. When the author showed up for his second interview, the former president did not appear to remember giving a first, Mr. Setoodeh said, although just under three months had passed."

Woodward Book: Biden Like a 'Senile Grandfather'

A new book by Watergate journalist Bob Woodward features eyewitness accounts that claim President Joe Biden looked "frighteningly awful" and like a "senile grandfather" at fundraising events more than a year before he ended his bid for reelection.

According to the New York Post, Woodward's book, "War," quoted Liberties Journal President Bill Reichblum, who claimed Biden "never completed a sentence" at a fundraiser held in June 2023 at the home of philanthropists Michael and Susie Gelman.

"He would start to talk about something, jump somewhere else. He told the same story three times in exactly the same way and it meandered so much," Reichblum was quoted as saying in the book. "Frankly, my impression was there were times it was as though we didn't exist. He was just rambling and talking as to what came into his head."
