The law that allows Congress to do this needs to be challenged in court. Which will happen now that they have gone after Trump's tax returns. In which case it should be found in violation of the Fourth Admendment. Or at least that's my opinion.

 

Requiring a presidential candidate to reveal his or her tax returns is not a Fourth Amendment issue. It is a job qualification issue. When you apply for a job you are not allowed to refuse to supply your prospective employer with information about previous jobs, grades in college, and so on. The prospective employer is allowed to check your claims, by contacting previous employers, the college you claimed to graduate from, and so on. Prospective employers are also allowed to ask about felony convictions, time spent in prison, and so on.

Perhaps it's time for members of Congress to be required to turn over tax returns.

A good place to start is Nancy Pelosi. This woman has never made her tax returns public since serving in Congress.

Why is that?

 

There is probably no law. The absence of such a law does not mean that those who apply for a job, including the presidency, do not have to post facts about their behavior. I want there to be a law requiring presidential candidates to reveal their tax returns. That would handle the legal issue.

 

We will find embarrassing facts Trump wants to keep hidden. I suggest one or more of the following possibilities:

Trump has gone for years without paying income taxes;

Trump is not as rich as he says he is;

Trump has given little or nothing to charity;

Trump is not rich at all, but in debt. If he owes money to unsavory characters I definitely want to know about it, and who they are.
