Trump Settles One of His Records Fights With House Democrats
    [IMG]

(Bloomberg) -- Former president Donald Trump has settled a long-running fight with House Democrats over a subpoena for years of his financial records, his lawyers disclosed in a court filing late Wednesday.

    e
The notice from Trump’s attorneys didn’t include any details about the terms of the agreement, stating only that they’d reached a deal with the House Oversight Committee one day earlier. The notice came after a three-judge federal appeals panel in July upheld the committee’s authority to enforce its subpoena, while also ordering Democrats to narrow the scope of what they were seeking.

Trump’s lawyers didn’t return a request for comment.

House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney said in a statement Thursday that lawmakers would receive “key financial documents” in the agreement, but didn’t provide more details. Maloney said the records will be used for the panel’s investigation into Trump’s “unprecedented conflicts of interest, self-dealing, and foreign financial ties” and to “ensure that future presidents do not abuse their position of power for personal gain.”

The notice doesn’t affect a separate court fight between Trump and the House Ways and Means Committee, which has been seeking years of his tax returns from the IRS. A federal appeals court ruled earlier this month that the tax documents had to be turned over to the committee. Trump is challenging that decision.

The House Oversight case dated back to 2019, when the committee subpoenaed Trump’s accounting firm Mazars USA LLP for eight years of his financial records after his former attorney Michael Cohen testified before Congress accusing Trump of fraud.

Committee members said they also wanted to explore other potential ethics and legal problems presented by Trump’s business dealings. The subpoena covered records related to Trump individually as well as his businesses.

Trump lost challenges to the subpoena in the lower courts, but the US Supreme Court revived the fight in 2020, sending it back for another round of proceedings. A US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit panel again found mostly in the committee’s favor and Trump asked on Aug. 22 for the full court to reconsider the ruling.

Trump’s lawyers withdrew that request Wednesday, citing an Aug. 30 settlement among all the parties.

(Updates with House committee comment in fourth paragraph.)

Trump's former accounting firm turns over docs to Congress

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform has begun receiving documents from Mazars USA, which was Donald Trump's longtime accounting firm before it severed ties.

"After a yearslong legal fight, the House Oversight Committee has received a first trove of documents from the firm, which recently entered into a legal settlement agreeing to produce a range of financial documents from several years before Mr. Trump took office and during his early presidency. Mazars said in February it could no longer stand behind a decade of annual financial statements it had prepared for the Trump Organization," The New York Times reported Saturday.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who chairs the committee, said the company had "sent us a number of documents."

"We're reviewing them," she added. “Mazars is being very cooperative.”

Maloney, who will be leaving Congress in January after losing a primary against House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY), said her committee was the only one to obtain the documents.

"The Oversight Committee has been in a lengthy struggle to obtain financial documents from Mr. Trump as part of its investigation into allegations of conflicts of interest, inadequate financial disclosures and violations of the emoluments clauses of the Constitution, which bar the president from receiving profits from a domestic or foreign government other than his official compensation," the newspaper reported. "In 2019, Michael D. Cohen, Mr. Trump’s former personal attorney, testified before the committee that Mr. Trump’s financial statements had falsely represented the former president’s assets and liabilities and that Mr. Trump had 'inflated his total assets when it served his purposes' and, at other times, 'deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes.'"

When Mazars severed ties with Trump, it warned past statements about Trump's financial condition "should no longer be relied upon."

"This month, the committee reached a settlement with Mr. Trump and Mazars that allows the panel to obtain key financial documents," the newspaper reported. "The agreement states that Mazars must turn over any documents between 2014 and 2018 that indicate any false or undisclosed information about Mr. Trump’s assets, income or liabilities; communications related to any potential concerns that financial information provided by Mr. Trump’s companies was inaccurate; documents from November 2016 to 2018 related to the Old Post Office Building, a federal property in Washington that Mr. Trump’s company converted into a hotel through a lease deal; and documents from 2017 and 2018 related to relationships between Mr. Trump’s businesses and foreign states."

In February, Trump lashed out after Mazars severed ties.

"The accounting firm Mazars has been threatened, harassed, and insulted like virtually no other firm has ever been," Trump complained. "They were essentially forced to resign from a great long-term account by the prosecutorial misconduct of a highly political, but failed, gubernatorial candidate, Letitia James, and the Hillary Clinton run District Attorney's Office of Manhattan, where crime has reached levels not even thought possible ..."

"Mazars decision to withdraw was clearly a result of the AG's and DA's vicious intimidation tactics used — also on other members of the Trump Organization," Trump said. "Mazars, who were scared beyond belief, in conversations with us made it clear that they were willing to do or say anything to stop the constant threat which has gone against them for years. They were 'broken' and just wanted it all to stop."

New York AG Letitia James sues Trump and his family for fraud: court records

New York attorney general Letitia James has filed a civil fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump, according to court records.

The state attorney general filed the lawsuit against the former president, his three eldest children, the Trump Organization and other individuals associated with operating the family-owned business and other Trump-associated entities.

Trump's inner circle had been expecting the lawsuit as the result of her years-long investigation into asset valuations at his real estate company and other allegedly fraudulent activities.

The attorney general believes Trump and his co-defendants violated state and local laws and referred the case to the U.S. attorney's office for the Southern District of New York and the Internal Revenue Service.

She is seeking $250 million in allegedly ill-gotten proceeds and to permanently ban Trump and his eldest children from serving as the director of any business registered in New York state.

All four members of the Trump family have sat for sworn depositions with James, who is facing re-election in November.

New York AG goes after Trump's Florida property Mar-a-Lago for inflating the value by 100 times

New York Attorney General Letitia James took aim at Donald Trump's luxurious Palm Beach County estate, Mar-a-Lago, as she announced her findings regarding allegedly artificially inflated assets.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, James said that Trump "blatantly ignored legal restrictions at Mar-a-Lago." She explained that the property of Mar-a-Lago was valued on the "false premise that it sat on unrestricted property and could be developed for residential use."

Trump knew, she said, that Mar-a-Lago had restrictions on residences. In fact, when Trump moved to Florida to live at Mar-a-Lago, the city council met to re-vote after previously saying that he couldn't live there more than a certain percentage of the year.

IN OTHER NEWS: Merrick Garland signals that Trump's threats won’t intimidate him

"Mr. Trump himself signed deeds sharply restricting changes to the property and donating his residential development rights in an effort to get a tax deduction and later to lower his property taxes on the property," said James. "The deeds also require Mr. Trump to donate over 23 percent of Mar-a-Lago's value to the historic trust for historic preservation if he ever sold it. Despite these restrictions, Mr. Trump valued it based on the fact it was an 18-acre plot of land that could be sold and used as a private home. The valuations represent that these restrictions don't even exist."

She explained that the revenue from Mar-a-Lago is less than $25 million and should have been valued at no more than $75 million. Instead, Trump valued it as high as $739 million.

Mar-a-Lago was just one of the many properties that Trump used to pad a wealth that James called nothing more than "smoke and mirrors."

'He still has to deal with New York': AG Letitia James says Trump can't flee to Florida to avoid consequences

    MSNBC

Attorney general Letitia James warned Donald Trump that he could leave New York but would still face consequences for his alleged crimes there.

The attorney general announced a $250 million criminal fraud lawsuit against the former president, his three eldest children, their family-owned business and other top company executives, but she said Trump's move to Florida would not allow him to get away with the years-long pattern of criminal behavior.

"This conduct cannot be brushed aside and dismissed as some sort of good-faith mistake," James told reporters. "Statements of financial condition were greatly exaggerated, grossly inflated, objectively false -- therefore, fraudulent and illegal. As a result of that, we are seeking relief. Mr. Trump, the Trump Organization, his family, they should be held accountable. That's the purpose of this litigation that we are filing today, in addition to referring the criminal conduct to the Southern District of New York as well as the IRS. No one, my friend, is above the law."

RELATED: New York AG goes after Trump's Florida property Mar-a-Lago for inflating the value by 100 times

James said it would not matter to her lawsuit if Trump moved his companies to Florida, just as it didn't matter that he had been president.

"They attempted to delay this investigation," she said. "Two judges have dismissed those claims that this was a political witch hunt, so I give no credence to those names that he has referred to me. Two, Mr. Trump, the Trump Organization, as well as his family, will still have to deal with this complaint, they will have to respond. They will have to respond to the allegations therein. If he decided to move to Florida, the reality is, he still has to deal with the great state of New York and respond to the complaint."

    A civil law suit.
This must be so disappointing to despicables.
Can't expect a perp walk from a civil law suit, doesn't happen.

But then after 3 years of investigating and the District Attorney basically dropping its investigation into Trump, James must have felt compelled to file ................... something. $250 MILLION? That's what she wants now?
Trump could probably write the check for that from petty cash.
Bet he doesn't though. He'd rather pay attorneys than the state.

As always your Chosen One is infallible and can do no wrong. And Trump doesn't use any of his own money to pay is legal bills and/or fines. He has rubes like you to donate to him so he can use their money.

Why don't you tell us then how much this "rube" has donated to Trump?
      You can't.

But it makes for a nice dodge to try and avoid explaining or justifying a 3 year investigation that ends up with nothing more than a civil lawsuit that Trump could settle from petty cash.

You STILL don't get your perp walk do you stumbler?

The problem is going to be how do you find a jury in any trial civil or criminal, on both sides will ask which political party do you support, have ever supported any organisation that supports any group has supported any campaign of any politician in the last 10 years.Have you or your family work or worked for the accused.

I will put a marker on this because your predictions usually turn out to be just laughable. But in a way you could be right because most legal experts are saying Letitia James has Trump and his kids so dead to rights they will probably fold like cheap suits and try to settle.

    1. anon_de_plume
She's already said she's not offering to settle.

Oh, she'll settle when she gets her political gold star and some press out of the deal. No prosecutor claims "we won't settle" unless its to get some more press out of the deal. Prosecutors always want to talk deal, cause they can always claim victory. Going to trial is risky. Especially this time.

You think Trump gives an algae fart about $250 MILLION??
The Definitive Net Worth Of Donald Trump (forbes.com)

If Trump is worth $3 BILLION that $250 Million is about like your average American earning $100,000 being sued for $8,000.

The question is, will Trump let his ego get in the way of taking the obvious route out of this? He could write the check tomorrow, and James would have a "victory" she'd arrogantly parade around Manhattan.

Or, he can let the attorney's earn the bulk of that $250 MILLION and even if he still loses, it's all just chump change to Trump.

As I have said before you don't just have to watch what is being said but also and more importantly who is saying it. MAGA Haberman has spent years sucking up to Trump and never challenging him. Because she knows if you criticize Trump that's it and he will never forgive you or have any use for you again. So this is like saying the opposite. Haberman sees Trump going down so he is no longer useful to her and its time to turn on him to make herself look good.

WATCH: Maggie Haberman Says Trump ‘Biggest Demagogue Possibly in the History of This Country’ Who Excels at Playing Victim
    By Tommy ChristopherSep 23rd, 2022, 8:53 am
    683 comments

New York Times correspondent and CNN analyst Maggie Haberman said former President Donald Trump is the “biggest demagogue” perhaps “in the history of this country,” who excels at portraying himself as a victim of things like the bombshell fraud suit by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

On Thursday morning’s edition of CNN’s New Day, anchors John Berman and Brianna Keilar asked Haberman about the spate of bad legal news Trump has gotten this week — as well as some of Haberman’s recent observations about Trump.

Asked about the fraud suit, Haberman spoke rather unflatteringly about Trump — who is known to pay attention to what Haberman says:

BRIANNA KEILAR: There’s this civil fraud suit now that he’s facing that Letitia James, the New York AG has brought. And you know, Maggie, whenever we see any any legal action against Trump, he’s able to say, look, they’re after me. But I wonder in this case, does this hit on any vulnerability of his that is particularly sensitive, as you see it?

MAGGIE HABERMAN: There’s no question that having a prosecutor stand up there and say he is not worth what he claims, he has made all kinds of statements about his finances that are not true, is something that he has tried to avoid for many, many decades. So just on a, on a you know, on a personal level for him, that cuts a little differently.

Brianna, how this ends up playing out, I just don’t think we know yet. Again, this is a civil suit. As best as I can tell, she’s not making any moves in court to try to limit what the Trumps can do in business while this suit is playing out. That does say something about how aggressively she’s moving or not aggressively she’s moving.

But it is another thing, as you say, that he will point to to say, you know, I am a victim, they’re after me. He has, he has been, I think, the biggest demagogue we have seen in in politics, in national politics, in this country, in modern memory, possibly in the history of the country. And he is very good at using any time somebody is looking into possible misconduct or alleged misconduct and saying it’s an example of just how unfair it all is.

    Watch above via CNN.

Trump has never had majority support in the United States. Nevertheless, his supporters are cranks and fanatics. Most own guns. Many have served in the military. It might be dangerous to put Trump into prison, like he deserves. Nevertheless, it is dangerous to allow him to continue to go running around loose like the demented wild man he is. Trump should be put into a maximum security prison and denied the ability to communicate with his deranged cult followers.

Get rid of the four other inmates, and it would be perfect.

And his bathroom would consist of a low-flow porcelain commode, and all you can eat Micky-D's!

We might even let him have a couple of empty Top Secret/SCI folders as a memento of his time in office and Mar-a-lago.
