Influenza virus as an enveloped virus is relatively vulnerable to damaging environmental impacts. Depending on environmental conditions (e.g. humidity and temperature), however, it can survive up to several hours and in water at low temperatures (e.g. <20 °C) also considerably longer (up to several months). Influenza viruses are sensitive to lipid solvents and detergents. They are also vulnerable to heat and a low pH, depending on the virus type. Influenza A viruses with uncleaved HA are obviously more stable (loss of infectivity at pH <4.5) than viruses with cleaved HA (loss of infectivity at pH <5) .

The most outstanding characteristic of influenza viruses is their rapid evolution which leads to its great variability. This is the case especially with influenza A viruses. According to the antigenic properties of their envelope proteins, influenza A viruses are subdivided into a number of subtypes. 16 different HA and 9 different NA subtypes have been identified so far. The nomenclature system follows the pattern H(x)N(y) including the host of origin, geographical location, strain number, and year of isolation .
Influenza B viruses are not further divided into subtypes. The accumulation of point mutations leads to a step-by-step modification of the virus proteins (above all in the two surface antigens HA and NA). This mechanism is described as ‘antigen drift’ and is also typical of influenza B viruses.
The variability of the type B viruses, however, is also characterised by other mechanisms such as insertion and deletion, as the influenza B lines show which have been co-circulating and stable for more than 20 years .
The process of ‘antigen shift’ (re-assortment) is defined as the exchange of whole genome segments, above all HA genes, which might result in influenza viruses which have a selective advantage compared with their parent viruses.

A prerequisite for this re-assortment is simultaneous infection of a cell by two different influenza A viruses. This will result in a variety of different hybrid viruses with different characteristics which they have received from the parent viruses via the individual genome segments. An example is the occurrence of the influenza A/H2N2 subtype in 1957 which superseded the influenza A/H1N1 virus which was dominant until then .

Special attention was drawn to the public by the deaths caused in humans by the highly pathogenic avian influenza A/H5N1 subtype. These cases have shown that an entirely new influenza A virus can cause deadly infections in humans.
Since the first outbreaks of H5N1-related avian influenza in poultry in South-East Asia in 2003, human H5N1 transmissions with high mortality have occurred in 10 countries. .
It is possible that this virus will adapt better to humans and will then be able to spread among the human population

 

White House Declares Pandemic Over As It Cites Renowned Scientist Ivanka Trump

The Trump administration triumphantly declared victory over the coronavirus pandemic on Tuesday, one week before the 2020 election and with COVID-19 cases surging across the country.

The lie came in a news release on a new 62-page report from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy listing what it claims are the scientific and technological accomplishments during President Donald Trump’s first term. The list includes, “ENDING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC.”

“From the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the administration has taken decisive actions to engage scientists and health professionals in academia, industry, and government to understand, treat, and defeat the disease,” the release states.

The pandemic is far from over. It is raging from coast to coast, thanks in no small part to the Trump administration’s mishandled response. A recent report from Columbia University estimates that the “abject failures” of government agencies under Trump resulted in between 130,000 and 210,000 avoidable deaths attributable to COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, the disease’s U.S. fatality toll topped 226,000 and the nation is averaging more than 70,000 new cases per day.

From the beginning of the outbreak, Trump has been at war not with COVID-19, but rather COVID-19 science and data. He has repeatedly downplayed the health threat, blamed China and the World Health Organization for the pandemic, attacked the nation’s top infectious disease expert and mocked his election opponent, Democrat Joe Biden, for vowing to listen to scientists as president.

At the final presidential debate last week, he falsely claimed that America is “rounding the turn” and “learning to live with” the coronavirus pandemic ― falsehoods that he has been repeating on the campaign trail.

Among other White House officials, Tuesday’s release includes a quote from Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and adviser who has zero training or background as a scientific expert.

“Over the past four years, President Trump’s policies and investments in science and technology ensure America stands ready to solve today’s most pressing challenges and that our workforce is prepared for tomorrow’s innovations,” Ivanka Trump said. “For years to come, these achievements will guarantee the United States remains the world’s leader in research, discovery and the advancement of industries that will shape our future.”

Tuesday’s self-congratulatory release underscores that the administration has simultaneously surrendered to the pandemic while trying desperately to steer public attention away from its failure to control the spread. During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows declared that the U.S. is “not going to control” the pandemic because it’s “contagious.”
Trump has pushed wild, unfounded conspiracy theories that the media is trying to sow fear ahead of the election and that health officials are exaggerating COVID-19 deaths because “doctors get more money and hospitals get more money.”

“The Fake News is talking about CASES, CASES, CASES,” Trump posted to Twitter on Saturday. “Media is doing everything possible to create fear prior to November 3rd.”

The White House release highlights dozens of actions across federal scientific agencies over the last four years, but notably makes no mention of the climate change and extinction crises that Trump and his team have largely ignored as they’ve led an aggressive industry-first agenda. Still, the administration boasted that its policies have given Americans a deeper understanding of our planet.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, the federal government has taken action to understand and protect our environment to ensure that the American people will have clean air, clean water, and a resilient environment for generations to come,” the release states.

Trump’s Latest Whopper: California Requires ‘Special’ Masks That Can’t Be Removed

President Trump came up with a brand new COVID-related falsehood on Wednesday during a campaign rally in Arizona, where he baselessly claimed that people in Californian are forced to wear a “special mask” that cannot be removed “under any circumstances.”

Obviously, it goes without saying that this is absolutely not true.

“In California, you have a special mask. You cannot under any circumstances take it off. You have to eat through the mask,” Trump said. “It’s a very complex mechanism, and they don’t realize those germs, they go through it like nothing. They look at you with that contraption and they say that’s an easy one, I’m going right through with the food.”

“Now, how about California, though, where you’re supposed to eat with the mask, can’t take it off,” he continued. “You see people and boy, you know, when you have spaghetti and meat sauce, that mask is not looking — you walk out, it looks like you got into a fight with [UFC President] Dana White.”

We probably shouldn’t even have to say it again, but obviously this is just false. There is no “special mask” that Californians have that somehow no other state has, and Californians are not forbidden from removing masks “under any circumstances.” And the state’s guidance for restaurants and bars clearly states that guests should wear face coverings “when not eating or drinking.”

The California Department of Public Health’s guidance on face coverings also states that “persons who are seated at a restaurant or other establishment that offers food or beverage service, while they are eating or drinking, provided that they are able to maintain a distance of at least six feet away from persons who are not members of the same household or residence” are exempt from wearing masks.

So no, you aren’t required to shovel your spaghetti through your mask while you’re eating in California.

The comments are just one of the dozens of incorrect or untruthful statements about COVID-19 Trump has advanced during the election season, such as his claim that the U.S. is “rounding the corner” on the pandemic. In reality, we are actually experiencing a dangerous surge in cases, and more than 227,000 people have died.

A new wave of lockdowns and business closings swept across Europe​

Researchers studying the coronavirus and its genetic mutations revealed in a study a genetic mutation that originated in farmworkers in Spain may have contributed to the second wave in Europe, a report said.

The Financial Times reported scientists are working to determine what role, if any, variant 20A.EU1 could play in disease's transmission or lethality. Scientists are looking at the mutation's possible effect on the virus' “spike protein." The variant was found in cases across the continent, including more than 80 percent in Spain, the paper reported.

The report pointed out the study has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Emma Hodcroft, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Basel, said there is no evidence the mutation “increases transmission or impacts the clinical outcome,” according to the paper.

A new wave of lockdowns and business closings swept across France, Germany and other places in Europe as surging coronavirus infections there and in the U.S. wipe out months of progress against the scourge on two continents.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “We are deep in the second wave. I think that this year’s Christmas will be a different Christmas.”

Well, Shooter has continued to look for the CDC chart, you know, to track Covid. He still hasn't found it. He did find this one;


Shooter is updating because he saw his Dr. today, and the topic of Covid came up.
So Shooter was correct; the medicos are getting much better at treating Covid, to the point that it is proving more effective than a vaccine probably ever will be. Vexing problems that remain are catching Covid early enough when often there are no symptoms, and figuring out why the after effects can be so severe in some groups, less severe than a cold in others. Age clearly plays a role and obesity, circulation issues, diabetes, and high blood pressure also are clear indicators of the potential for complications.

But, the Dr. made a couple of interesting points; we've had the common cold around for, well, forever, and the Covid version of the common cold for at least 50 years, and have never found a workable vaccine. This is because the fucking thing keeps mutating. Shooter's dr. offered the opinion that a vaccine, a truly effective vaccine, is still many years off and we're better off focusing on treatment. Prevention is more a case of common sense; social distancing, a mask, and washing often. Oh, and don't lick any door knobs.

 

Ok this is another reason to get a flu shot.

News of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine being co-developed here in the Netherlands but I am worried about the efficacu and longevity of all of these vaccines given the short lived antibody response to infection..........basically only time will give us the data on the longevity of protection!

Johnson & Johnson has told US regulators it plans to start testing its experimental Covid-19 vaccine in people aged 12 to 18 as soon as possible.

“We plan to go into children as soon as we possibly can, but very carefully in terms of safety,” Reuters quoted J&J’s Dr Jerry Sadoff as saying in a virtual meeting of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee on immunisation practices on Friday.

Depending on safety and other factors, the company plans to test in even younger children afterwards, said Sadoff, a vaccine research scientist at J&J’s Janssen unit.

J&J said in a statement that itwas currently in discussions with regulators and partners about the inclusion of the paediatric population in its trials.

The US Food and Drug Administration has said it is important for drugmakers to test their vaccines in children. Some doctors have raised concerns that the vaccines themselves could trigger a rare, life-threatening condition called multi-system inflammatory syndrome in some children.

Pfizer has already begun testing the Covid-19 vaccine it is developing with Germany’s BioNTech in children as young as 12. Their vaccine uses messenger RNA (mRNA), a new technology that has yet to produce an approved vaccine.

US sets all-time global high for daily coronavirus cases – Reuters tally puts figure at 100,233
There are several different counts of how many cases of coronavirus the US has, and this morning the Reuters tally set an all-time global high for cases recorded in a 24-hour period, with just over 100,000 new infections on Friday, eclipsing its previous record of 91,000 the day before.

The daily caseload of 100,233 surpasses the 97,894 cases reported by India on a single day in September.

The US has exceeded its previous single-day record of 77,299 cases registered in July five times in the past ten days. The number of daily infections reported in the last two days suggests the country is reporting more than one new case every second.

The US has a rate of about 28,100 cases per million people, which places it about 14th in the world for prevalence.

The New York Times keeps an alternative tally, and they give yesterday’s figure as 98,859. This is, they record, 42% higher than the number of daily new cases was 14 days ago.

For consistency, on this live blog we’ve been using the figures from the Johns Hopkins University tracker, which put the number of new US cases yesterday at 99,321.

Five states — Maine, Minnesota, Indiana, Nebraska and Colorado — set single-day case records. Cases were also mounting in the Mountain West and even in the Northeast, which over the summer seemed to be getting the virus under control.

North and South Dakota and Wisconsin have led the country for weeks in the number of new cases relative to their population. But other states have seen steep recent increases in the last 14 days.
