The problem from the start of this pandemic has not changed, it has been politicize, criticized, and everyone and their brother has a story to tell. And not one is the same as the next. Conflicting stories, do this don't do that. Stay home, send the kids to school, governors forcing people to stay home, while they get on planes. They tell you wear a mask, social distance, wash your hands. They don't tell you take vitamins, keep your immune system strong, ultraviolet light kills the virus.
It does all come down to risk, but the best they can tell you, besides you are at risk, is the risk is what? You get it or you don't? No one can stop it, but if you get it you could be asymptomatic, what's the risk, you could get a weaker strain, what's the risk, you could die, what's the risk?
They want you to do as they say. That's the risk, just blindly trust, what they don't know, but will tell you. Because they believe they know what their doing? In March, they told us by April this will be back to normal. Then by June, the end of summer, none of it truth. They told us, because of Thanksgiving travel millions will get infected. The numbers are going up, not by the millions.
Track record for what they have claimed is pretty low, what's the risk?
I honestly hope we all stay well, healthy and happy. Unfortunately some will not, for any number of reasons. Is the risk real? Without a doubt, should you continue to believe those that have given you wrong information, over and over? Because there is no other choices? What's the risk?
Do what you feel is best, are you high risk, be that much more careful. Do what makes a difference for you. No one can control the risk.

 

My granddaughter has been diagnosed to have contracted the virus, she apparently caught it from a guy she dated last week, felt symptoms Sunday, tested positive Monday. She has her own house nearby her mother’s, who is my daughter.

My daughter works at my wife’s business, so both she and my wife were tested yesterday, both were negative.

A Belgian minister has inadvertently blown the lid off a sensitive and commercial secret – the price that the EU has agreed to pay for the leading Covid vaccines.

Belgium’s budget state ecretary, Eva De Bleeker, posted the price list on Twitter, with the amounts of each vaccine that her country intends to buy from the EU. The tweet was quickly deleted, but not soon enough to prevent interested parties taking screenshots, which have now made it public knowledge.

While access-to-medicines campaigners were delighted at the transparency, pharmaceutical companies were not. Pfizer complained of a breach of confidentiality. “These prices are covered by a confidentiality clause in the contract with the European commission,” said Elisabeth Schraepen, the US drugmaker’s spokeswoman for the Benelux region to the Belgian daily Le Soir.

The price list revealed that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is the cheapest and Moderna is the most expensive – as was already known. But the details allow countries that may be negotiating with the vaccine manufacturers to take a harder line.

Every country in the world has an interest in mass vaccination against Covid and there is a big ongoing effort to put together a programme to ensure all countries can access enough to vaccinate the vulnerable. But drug and vaccine prices have always been very closely guarded commercial secrets.

“We can’t say anything about this case, everything about vaccines and prices are covered by confidentiality clauses, in the interests of society and also in the interests of negotiations ongoing,” said a spokesman for the EU commission at a news briefing.

Belgium is buying more than 33m vaccines for a total of €279m (£253).

The UK, which is not part of the EY scheme, has secured 357m doses of various vaccines, including 40m doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech which was authorised for use in the UK before the rest of the world.

There will now be speculation in the UK and other countries as to whether their governments could have got a better deal with lower prices for their citizens.

So there we see a reflection of the actual cost of developing and producing thier
product.

Given that benchmark ,
one has to ask how much some of the others are trying to make out of this global crisis.


Then , given Phizer's product requirements for storage and transport ,
it probably 'can't fly' around half the world ,
so once others have proven products ,
will likely have very reduced demand ,
if any.

Of course everything depends on what is actually effective , and safe.
out in the real world.

Personally I think under the current circumstances ,
given it is basically a world wide emergency
and tragedy ,
putting this information out there is a good thing.

Now it is exposed , governments and authorities can ask the pertinent questions ,
and decide for themselves if there's excessive profiteering etc.

Let's face it , we , the world , are likely to need this type of product for many years to come ,
so there's plenty of time to cover costs and make a reasonable profit.

Now is not a good time to be caught out indulging in excessive greed.

IF somebody can produce a good product for under €2 ,
you have to wonder why others are up to 10×
as expensiv.

Made in India , or Made in China ,
Vietnam , Taiwan or Korea

I found a preliminary phylogenetic analysis of this new covid-19 strain which is obviously more virulent (infectious) than the original virus as it has an increased affinity for the human ACE2 receptor which is how it invades our bodies. Other mutations in the spike protein pose questions for vaccine efficacy.

It is a technical read but here is the summary and the full reference.

Preliminary genomic characterisation of an emergent SARS-CoV-2 lineage in the UK defined by a novel set of spike mutations

Summary
Recently a distinct phylogenetic cluster (named lineage B.1.1.7) was detected within the COG-UK surveillance dataset. This cluster has been growing rapidly over the past 4 weeks and since been observed in other UK locations, indicating further spread.

Several aspects of this cluster are noteworthy for epidemiological and biological reasons and we report preliminary findings below. In summary:
The B.1.1.7 lineage accounts for an increasing proportion of cases in parts of England. The number of B.1.1.7 cases, and the number of regions reporting B.1.1.7 infections, are growing.
B.1.1.7 has an unusually large number of genetic changes, particularly in the spike protein.
Three of these mutations have potential biological effects that have been described previously to varying extents:

• Mutation N501Y is one of six key contact residues within the receptor-binding domain (RBD) and has been identified as increasing binding affinity to human and murine ACE2.
• The spike deletion 69-70del has been described in the context of evasion to the human immune response but has also occurred a number of times in association with other RBD changes.
• Mutation P681H is immediately adjacent to the furin cleavage site, a known location of biological significance.

The rapid growth of this lineage indicates the need for enhanced genomic and epidemiological surveillance worldwide and laboratory investigations of antigenicity and infectivity.

Time for a few xtra precautions/isolation ,
and requirement of a negative test before embarking in thes direction maybe.

Given the rapid increases in UK recently
( 12g to 18 was bad enough , then into the 20s ,
now , 27g yesterday , and 36g today)
I think it should be enacted.

 

The data coming out of the UK shows that the new variant strain, first detected in September 2020, is now the predominant viral variant in in the UK viral population replacing the original.

The mutations this new variant has accumulated, some 17 muations in total, one of which enhances its receptor binding affinity which explains the increase in virulence and transmission and others that may damp the human immune reaction to the virus.

So far it has increases the R0 by about 0.4-0.5 over the original strain.
