As an aside, statistica also reports on the cost of aviation fuel.

Of interest, aviation fuel hit a high in 2012 of $3.17 a gallon (imagine the fuel bill for a 737 that holds roughly 6,000 gallons and burns 750 gallons an hour) and dropped to $1.43 in 2020.

    Wait.
While the price of auto gas jumped by 50% in 2020, why did aviation fuel hit a new low?
    Investigation is required.

Pandemic results in surge of car crash deaths — and it should inform debate over homicides: analysis

The coronavirus pandemic has not just resulted in increases in murders and overdoses, but also traffic fatalities.

"It was a tally that shocked the experts: 38,680 deaths on U.S. roadways last year, the most since 2007, even though pandemic precautions had dramatically reduced driving," the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. "The latest evidence suggests that after decades of safety gains, the pandemic has made U.S. drivers more reckless — more likely to speed, drink or use drugs and leave their seat belts unbuckled."

The increase was one of many trends that have occurred since the pandemic was first detected in America in 2020.

"Experts say that this behavior on the road is likely a reflection of widespread feelings of isolation, loneliness and depression," the newspaper reported. "The rise in motor vehicle deaths lines up with other pandemic-era trends: Alcohol sales have soared, drug overdoses have set new records, and homicides have seen their biggest increase on record."

Radley Balko, a Washington Post columnist and author of the 2013 book Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces, suggested that the traffic fatality deaths should inform the debate over the surge in homicides.

"The unexpected pandemic era surge in murders has been accompanied by a similarly unexpected pandemic era surge in traffic fatalities. Which at least suggests both are pandemic related and not caused by, say, lenient prosecutors or Black Lives Matter," he wrote.

I have no idea of whether or not this is true, but neither does the author.
The title, which is only what most people remember, definitively states "Pandemic results in surge of car crash deaths...."
But in the body of the article, the LA Times is quoted as saying, "The latest evidence suggests that after decades of safety gains, the pandemic has made U.S. drivers more reckless — more likely to speed, drink or use drugs and leave their seat belts unbuckled." Other weasel words include likely, lines up, accompanied by, and suggests at least 2 more times.
Bottom line -- this is an opinion piece which supports the current narrative (COVID=scary bad), but it's presented as hard news.
At this point, it is nothing but propaganda.

You are learning, @Scotchlass , that a little investigation exposes the bullshit, propaganda, spin, and lies that stumbler and those like him will post here.

Stumbler has claimed he is a former newspaper editor and is therefore responsible.

But pointing out the bullshit, propaganda, spin, and lies that stumbler and his ilk post are never acknowledged or apologized for.

Indian State Welcomes Thousands of Tourists, Closes Schools over Coronavirus

The Indian state of Goa announced Monday it will shut down schools through the end of the month and implement a curfew in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic – just days after video showed throngs of thousands of tourists enjoying the state’s beaches.

Goa, a southern state along India’s west coast, regularly attracts thousands of tourists for New Year celebrations and extended vacations. This year was no different despite rising international concern over the omicron variant of the Chinese coronavirus, first identified in South Africa in November but present in Europe before its discovery. Last week, Indian officials documented a modest decline in cases and hospitalizations, observing that most cases still appeared to be of the delta variant of the Chinese coronavirus, which originated in the country.

As the omicron variant has begun to spread, confirmed coronavirus cases are increasing. Goa, in particular, has experienced a tourist-driven rise in cases that has now compromised the education of children who live there. Authorities reportedly documented a ten percent increase in coronavirus cases since the Christmas season began (Goa, formerly under Portuguese rule, is one of India’s most Christian regions).

Indian media published several videos on Monday of Baga Beach, a popular Goa tourist destination, during the New Year celebrations. Crowds of apparently thousands of people appeared packed shoulder-to-shoulder on the street near the beach, compromising car traffic and clearly not socially distancing. Goa officials have reportedly implemented a vaccine mandate for bars and restaurants in the area, but there is no indication of social distancing protocol to keep people spaced apart.

“Goa locals say the crowd in the video mostly comprised of tourists,” the Hindustan Times confirmed on Monday. “From 2.33 percent on December 26, the positivity rate in the coastal state has now crossed ten percent.”

CNN News 18 journalist Herman Gomes published a dramatic video of the crowds in the area, also confirming that the crowd was “mostly tourists.”

The significant spike in coronavirus cases, including four omicron cases as of Monday, directly followed the influx of tourists into the state. Local officials announced Monday that “appropriate measure will be taken in sync [with] the overall guidelines of Government of India,” but all the official protocol announced limits the rights of locals in Goa, not necessarily tourists, nor does it affect any previous risky activity in the state.

Goa’s coronavirus task force announced Monday it would shut down universities and schools through January 26, leaving the population to resort at best to virtual learning. During that period, the state will also enforce a curfew between 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

“Restrictions will also be imposed on indoor functions,” a representative said without elaborating, according to the Times of India.

“We deliberated on various ways to ensure we don’t take any knee-jerk decision & ensure that citizens as well as tourists coming to Goa are safe,” Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane posted on Twitter after the announcement of limitations on residents’ rights.

India nationally documented 33,750 new cases of the coronavirus generally on Monday, significantly more than the day before. India’s Health Ministry documented a positivity rate on Monday of 3.83 percent, a spike from the weekly average of 1.68 percent.

The Hindustan Times reported on Monday that the number of deaths dropped, however, even as case rates rose.

‘The country saw 123 [coronavirus]-related deaths in the last 24 hours, a drop of 161 fatalities when compared to the previous day’s tally of 284,” the newspaper observed. “The total [coronavirus]-related deaths in the country now stand at 4,81,893.”

The rise in cases is nonetheless a significant shift from last week. The number of confirmed cases on Monday, December 27, was about 7,000 lower than the week before. Most days in the past week, however, the total number of daily cases remained around 6,000-7,000, nowhere near the almost 34,000 cases documented on Monday.

Even last week, some Indian regions implemented new coronavirus social distancing measures in anticipation of the omicron variant spike seen elsewhere on the planet. In Delhi, the capital region, authorities implemented a curfew last week and shut down schools, gyms, political, and religious gatherings. Many Delhi residents ignored the measures for New Year celebrations, however.

“Between December 31 and January 1, Delhi reported 2,716 new [Chinese coronavirus] cases, which is being reported as the highest single-day spike since May 2021,” the Hindustan Times reported. “And it’s around the same time that Delhiites decided to throng some of the historical monuments and public parks in the city, throwing caution to the wind!”

“For many, picnicking at these spots on January 1, it seemed to be a revenge for not being able to throng cinemas, multiplexes and malls, due to the restrictions as per the yellow alert in Delhi,” the newspaper observed. “Spotted with food baskets placed on bedsheets spread over the green lawns, many a Delhiites welcomed 2022, while being unmasked, paying little thought to social distancing, and certainly collecting in large numbers!”

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which cares for some of the most visited sites, issued a statement requesting that visitors abide by the government’s coronavirus protocol, adding, “Our staff has placed sanitisers in the monuments premises, and regularly urges people to mask up and socially distance.”

Covid cases rise by almost 1000% in Florida and hospitalisations are up 40%.......delta is still around accounting for about 40% of cases while omicron accounts for 60%.

Don't forget to consult shooter for all the latest nonsense because let's remember it is his "mild flu" that has caused over 800,000 deaths in the US so far.

Alternatively get vaccinated, wash your hand and practice social distancing.......that way if you do get ill there might still be healthcare staff fit enough to treat you.

They're not convinced Nazis or Communists, but they lack the ability to distinguish between fact and fiction (i.e., the reality of experience). DeSantis jokes about Dems from strict COVID states visiting Florida after AOC spotted maskless in Miami
"I mean, congresspeople, mayors, governors, I mean you name it."

FT. LAUDERDALE — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis joked about how Democrats from states with "draconian" coronavirus policies keep popping up in his state for vacation.

DeSantis was asked about this during a press conference Monday after progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was spotted in Miami over the weekend, not wearing a mask while at a crowded drag bar.

"If I had a dollar for every lockdown politician who decided to escape to Florida over the last two years, I’d be a pretty doggone wealthy man, let me tell you," DeSantis joked. "I mean, congresspeople, mayors, governors, I mean you name it."

"It’s interesting the reception that some of these folks will get in Florida," the governor continued, "because I think a lot of Floridians say wait a minute you’re bashing us because we’re not doing your draconian policies, and yet we’re the first place you want to flee to, to basically to be able to enjoy life."

DeSantis specifically pointed to governors of states with strict policies who had spent time in the Sunshine State.

"There are probably about a half dozen governors who had restrictions on their people and then were spotted at various points in Florida. Some of it’s been public, some of it‘s not been public, but you know people tell me these things," he said.

The Republican made clear that he did not begrudge them for it, taking pride in the desirability of the state he leads.

Anti-Vax Leader Urges Followers to Drink Their Own Urine to Fight COVID

Anti-COVID-19 “Vaccine Police” leader Christopher Key has a new quarter-baked conspiracy theory for his anti-vax followers to use to cure themselves of COVID-19: Drink their own urine. “The antidote that we have seen now, and we have tons and tons of research, is urine therapy. OK, and I know to a lot of you this sounds crazy, but guys, God’s given us everything we need,” Key said in a video posted over the weekend on his Telegram account after being released from jail over a trespassing charge. “This has been around for centuries,” he added. “When I tell you this, please take it with a grain of salt,” the anti-vaccine advocate warned while saying people might now think he is “cray cray.” “Now drink urine!” he continued. “This vaccine is the worst bioweapon I have ever seen,” he concluded. “I drink my own urine!” Reached for comment by The Daily Beast on Sunday night, Key doubled down on what he calls “urine therapy” and railed against “foolish” people who took the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and effective.

This was long over due and glorious to watch. Dr Fauci finally demanded time to address Rand Paul's baseless attacks and just ripped him to fucking shreds. And Dr Fauci also hammered Paul over his fund raising schemes threatening the lives of him and his children.

Dr. Fauci destroys Rand Paul in Covid-19 shouting match: 'In usual fashion, you are distorting everything'

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has waged a personal war against Dr. Anthony Fauci over the past year, but in a Tuesday hearing the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases came prepared to fight back.

Armed with screen captures of Paul's website, Fauci showed that the senator is using his attacks to make campaign cash.

Meanwhile, Fauci said that each time Paul attacks him he's plagued with threats against him and his children. In one case, he explained, a man was arrested in Iowa with a "hit list" that included Fauci. He had an assault rifle and ammunition in his possession, according to the reports.

Biden Administration Reveals 50 Million Coronavirus Tests Are Just Sitting in Warehouses

Assistant Secretary Dawn O’Connell from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Tuesday revealed 50 million coronavirus tests are sitting in warehouses.

As the Biden administration purchases $190 million worth of testing kits in January, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) asked O’Connell during a Senate committee hearing if she could assure him that Biden’s testing kit purchases are not originating from Communist China.

O’Connell responded by admitting HHS has millions of unused tests in warehouses, which are in addition to the outstanding tests out for delivery to the warehouses.

“So is what you’re telling me they’ve got 50 million tests in warehouses in the United States and all we did was access the inventory?” Burr asked for clarification.

“That is my understanding,” O’Connell responded.

“Well, will you confirm your understanding?” Burr asked. “This is a very, very important piece when you’ve got companies that don’t manufacture tests and all of a sudden we’re giving them a $190 million contract for about 14 million home tests and their expertise is importation of vodka.”

While HHS acknowledged it has not shipped 50 million tests, Biden promised to have enough testing kits available for all Americans. Yet after the omicron variant reached the nation’s shores, Americans found testing kits in short supply.

“It’s clearly not enough. If I had — we had — known, we would have gone harder, quicker, if we could have,” Biden admitted in December he broke his testing kit promise. “We have to do more. We have to do better, and we will.”

US sets new record for COVID-19 hospitalizations

The United States on Tuesday set a new record for COVID-19 hospitalizations, with more than 145,000 people in the hospital with the virus.

The 145,982 people hospitalized with COVID-19, according to Department of Health and Human Services data, surpasses the previous peak of about 142,000 people set in January 2021, during a major winter surge before vaccines were widely available.

People who are vaccinated and especially those who received their booster shots are well protected against severe disease and hospitalization from the virus. But the sheer number of cases of COVID-19, fueled by the highly transmissible omicron variant, means that even a small percentage leading to hospitalization causes a surge that strains hospitals.

The hospitalizations are driven in large part by people who are unvaccinated.

Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease doctor at Emory University and at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, said last week that 80 to 90 percent of the patients primarily in the hospital for COVID-19 were unvaccinated, or in some cases had two shots of vaccine (without a booster) and had an underlying condition.

About a third of the patients with the virus, he said, have tested positive for COVID-19 but are not primarily in the hospital because of the virus.

Hospital staffing shortages, including from health workers being home sick with the virus themselves, are adding the problem.

“The percent in the ICU is much lower [than previous surges], but that doesn’t mean that we're not getting overwhelmed,” del Rio said.

Overwhelmed hospitals also reduce the quality of care for vaccinated people who need help for non-COVID-19 issues, like a car crash or a heart attack.

The U.S. is now recording an unprecedented average of more than 700,000 cases per day, according to a New York Times tracker, though many of those cases are mild. Deaths, however, are also now rising, with an average of around 1,600 per day.

Lol - even the talking heads on leftist media like CNN are talking about the number of hospitalizations that are identified as COVID, but are not because of COVID, but with COVID. These days, it's not hard to test positive for Omicron (and suffer very little in the way of ill effects).

Funny how they are all coming to this reality at the same time, when voices banned on social media have been talking about this as far back as two years ago.
