Bloomfield will tonight be leading the New Zealand delegation at the 2020 World Heath Assembly which is being held virtually and livestreamed.

New Zealand is co-sponsoring a resolution on Covid-19 to agree, at the high level, future areas of work that member states, the WHO and other organisations should deliver in unity, such as fair access to vaccines.

no idea why that went yellow , I didn't choose it
    ****
By agreeing a resolution, member states signalled their intention to co-operate with the review and it's expected it would be adopted unanimously.

China Admits They Destroyed Early Lab Samples of Virus, Their Excuse Is Ridiculous
Posted at 10:30 pm on May 17, 2020 by Nick Arama

In this photo released by China’s Xinhua News Agency, medical personnel wearing protective suits work in the department of infectious diseases at Wuhan Union Hospital in Wuhan in central China’s Hubei Province, Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020. Hong Kong’s leader announced Tuesday that all rail links to mainland China will be cut starting Friday as fears grow about the spread of a new virus. (Xiao Yijiu/Xinhua via AP)

The Chinese government has to learn to spin a little harder.

They’ve been spinning since the virus hit. But they’re just very horrible liars so it hasn’t gone over well.

But they’re going to have to do better with the latest piece of information.

A senior Chinese government official just confirmed that they had in fact ordered laboratories in January to destroy samples of the virus which they had collected.

This had been one of the accusations out there based on evidence by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and others and this just confirmed the accuracy of the accusation. China had previously issued a blanket denial to the accusations. China silenced doctors and journalists as well as destroying the samples. Pompeo made it clear he had the goods on China when he even named the date they destroyed the samples, Jan. 3.

But the China’s National Health Commission official Liu Dengfeng admitted on Friday that his agency ordered the labs to destroy the samples for safety reasons.

“If the laboratory conditions cannot meet the requirements for the safe preservation of samples, the samples should be destroyed on the spot or transferred to a professional institution for safekeeping,” Dengfend said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

“Based on comprehensive research and expert opinion, we decided to temporarily manage the pathogen causing the pneumonia as Class II — highly pathogenic — and imposed biosafety requirements on sample collection, transport and experimental activities, as well as destroying the samples,” Dengfeng said, according to the South China Morning Post.

So he’s basically asking us to believe that saving the samples, the crucial evidence for telling the origin of the virus, wasn’t able to be kept safely by professionals? So are they saying they’re idiots or criminal? Or just both if they think we buy that explanation.

Maybe their next prototype virus will be significantly deadly. This one mostly just devastates economies.

Here is the lastest summary from the Guardian as of 30 minutes ago.......thos of you that think stay at home orders are a waste of time should look at Brazil which is in tatters and Bolsanaro is getting through health ministers at a rate of two a month!

    Summary
Southern European countries ease lockdowns. Italy is reopening bars, cafes, restaurants and hairdressers - with social distancing measures in place - for the first time since its lockdown began. Meanwhile in Spain, almost three quarters of the country progressed to the second phase of its lockdown de-escalation, allowing millions of people to meet up in groups of up to 10, and to have a drink or a meal on cafe and restaurant terraces.

Global infections pass 4.7 million. There are 4,727,625 confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide. At least 315,482 people have died over the course of the pandemic. The number of deaths in the US is approaching 90,000, with 89,564 confirmed fatalities and 1,486,742 infections, according to the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

Japan falls into recession. Japan dived into its first recession since 2015, according to official data on Monday, with the world’s third-largest economy contracting by 0.9% in the first quarter as it wrestled with the fallout from the coronavirus.

South Africa reports highest daily increase in cases. It reported 1,160 new coronavirus infections, the highest daily number since the first case was recorded in March. The Western Cape province, popular with tourists, accounted for nearly 60% of the national numbers.

New virus cases in Russia under 9,000 for first time since 1 May. 8,926 new infections were recorded in the last 24 hours, as anti-virus restrictions ease and officials say the situation is stabilising.

Mayor of São Paulo, Brazil, says hospitals ‘near collapse’. The BBC has reported that the mayor of São Paulo, the country’s largest city, has warned that hospitals have reached 90% capacity and are “near collapse”. They could run out of space in two weeks’ time, he said. Brazil has the fourth-highest number of infections worldwide, with 241,080, according to Johns Hopkins University figures. It has recorded 16,118 deaths.

Meanwhile, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro greeted hundreds of supporters who gathered before the presidential offices Sunday and joined some in a series of push-ups .

Taiwan blocked from WHO meeting following Chinese pressure. Taiwan had been lobbying to take part in the World Health Assembly, which opens later on Monday, but did not get invited due to Chinese pressure, its foreign minister said, adding they had agreed to put the issue off until later this year.

Thailand’s economy contracts for first time since 2014. The coronavirus pandemic, which has shuttered borders and devastated the tourism-reliant country, caused the economy to shrink for the first time in six years.

Ryanair chief accuses UK of mismanaging coronavirus crisis. Michael O’Leary described the UK’s planned introduction of a 14-day quarantine period for travellers arriving from abroad as “idiotic and unimplementable”.

We have a draft global consensus and I have to say it is about fucking time......

Health ministers from around the world are expected to call for an independent evaluation of the World Health Organization’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic during a WHO meeting on Monday.

Though they have opposing views of the WHO’s performance, China and the United States are likely to join the consensus for an independent evaluation during a virtual meeting of the World Health Assembly, the WHO’s decision-making body, diplomats said.

The call will be made in a resolution being presented by the European Union at the annual two-day meeting.

The text also calls for timely and equitable access to safe and efficacious diagnostics, medicines and vaccines against the disease which has killed more than 300,000 people worldwide.

A fragile consensus emerged after more than a week of intense negotiations on the EU text, which could still change, the diplomats said.

    A European diplomat told Reuters:

It looks like the resolution will be adopted. Politically speaking, there is agreement for now on an evaluation of the whole system and an investigation into the origin (of the virus), but not immediately.

    Thinskin

It is important we were able to agree to the resolution, everybody.

The EU resolution is supported by a host of countries including Australia - a vocal critic of WHO and of China - as well as Britain, Canada, India, Japan and Russia.

Names on a draft resolution seen by Reuters showed support from 116 of the 194 countries in the WHO.

The text calls on the WHO director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to initiate an “impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation” of the WHO-coordinated international health response to Covid-19, including the effectiveness of existing mechanisms “at the earliest appropriate moment”.

It backs continued work, including through scientific “field missions”, to identify the zoonotic or animal source of the virus and how it crossed the species barrier to reach humans.

By the way, the population of Iceland was incorrectly numbered at about 274 thousand but the correct number is about 364 thousand. It’s a small detail but as someone who loves Iceland, I just wanted to correct this.

And these are the numbers of deaths per covid 19 per country per million set in descending order. Last number, of c0urse.

Instead of quoting numbers we know to be underestimated why not play around with epidemiological models based upon reasonable facts to date and assumptions for the future!

Plenty to occupy those people with the ethos.......just let them die!

Over 200,000 in the US by August and just look at the margin of error!

Why, we had numbers that showed we were all gonna die and it was Trumps fault.

We had projections that showed millions would need lengthy and expensive hospital care.

We were told by the expert scientists that unless we shut down the economy and cowered in place we would be stacking bodies in the streets.

None of this has been remotely true, except we've wasted 2 months of our lives, scared the hell out of people and blown up the economy.

So sure, lets run some more numbers and see what else we can expect.

Most countries have an infectious disease survey system and here are some results from the UK showing which subgroups of the population are likely to get infected.

This is the take home message confirming that smokers are half as likely to get infected than never smokers!

The RCGP surveillance system, set up in 1957, monitors consultations for communicable diseases using a network of 500 general practitioner practices across England, which are broadly representative of the population. Twice-weekly automatic data downloads provide a real-time warning of impending epidemics. In January, 2020, the network expanded to include the testing for SARS-CoV-2 among individuals presenting with symptoms of influenza or respiratory infection. COVID-19 surveillance data, supplemented with data from contact tracing or routine National Health Service facilities, were linked with electronic health records. Of 3802 tests, 587 (15·4%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Prevalence of infection was less than 5% in patients younger than 18 years (23 patients were positive [4·6%] of 499 tested) but almost four times as high in people aged 40 years or older (480 [18·2%] of 2637). After adjustment for other factors, infection risk was higher among men than women (odds ratio [OR] 1·55 [95% CI 1·27–1·89]), in black people than white people (OR 4·75 [2·65–8·51]), and in people with obesity than normal-weight people (1·41 [1·04–1·91]). Infection risk was also higher in those living in more deprived or in urban versus rural locations. Surprisingly, household size did not significantly affect infection risk. Among chronic comorbidities examined, only those with chronic kidney disease had an increased risk of infection, whereas the risk in active smokers was around half that observed in never smokers.

I think what is underestimated are the number of exposures because testing has not been made universally available. Obviously if everyone were tested we would have to find that far more people showed no or mild symptoms.

These numbers of death are as solid as the respective governments have allowed them to be.

Even so, if you compare this crisis to just about any pandemic in history it is remarkably mild.

As far as projections go they are as good as the assumptions of data allow them to be.

But let’s assume 200, ooo deaths in the US. That is 6 deaths per thousand and the principal demographic is around 80 years old. So those under 75 have a vanishingly lower death rate.

More people than this have already died in road fatalities this year.

Previously people who died in this age range had the cause of death listed as natural causes or perhaps pneumonia. Now many of them are listed as probable covid deaths.

My understanding is that the US is opening up. Let’s see how bad the numbers really are going to be.

I might also mention that prior to the 2016 American election, virtually every polling service projected Hilary Clinton to win. And these were based on much simpler mathematical models.

See you can’t help yourself. When your position is seriously assailed you revert to personal attacks. I am saying that murderous plagues have been a part of human history since at least the Peloponnesian war.

We have no predators except for microorganisms and each other (wars). We can not control these natural events.

I’m about to repost the short history of death from microorganisms and wish for you to take special note of two that happened since the 1918 pandemic that killed more than c-19.

Also I’m curious, you seem supportive of Facebook and YouTube in their banning of videos that they view downplay the “serious threat” of this virus. Dangerous misinformation and such descriptions.

Do you think I should be banned from presenting my findings on this forum?

In any case this is the brief history of larger microbial death statistics.

    Time for better perspective.

C-19 is hardly as singular or is as dramatic an event as we insist on making it. Daring to compare it to Spanish flu is just downright reckless. Spanish flu killed often within 24 hours after symptoms and killed in every demographic in society including babies and children. It’s incubation period was much shorter.

C-19 kills the weakest members of society because it is a weak virus.

I wish I could adjust for population but at the bottom of this are some of the greatest infection killers of all time. Of course communicable diseases other than c-19 have already taken about 5 million lives this year but they aren’t as fun to fixate upon.

Get perspective. We are terrifying ourselves over a disease that kills 4 in ten thousand with an average age of about 80. We are terrifying our children (my own 4 year old asked me if she is going to die!!!)

We are denying our children education. We are gutting our economies! All for the illusion of safety which will always be illusory.

People die of one thing or another and it will happen to every one reading this. Worry, if you must, about the things LIKELY to kill you but don’t be afraid to live. Being afraid to live is just another kind of death.

Here is what the world faced before and what we will face again no matter how we treat c-19.

    Antonine Plague
    165-180 A.D.
    5 million

    Plague of Justinian

Pandemic dickhead, look up the definition thereof and I did state the last 100 years!

I am not sure how much we are going to learn from the bubonic plague then again I am not sure how much you have learned period!

Would this be a suitable time for you to threaten me again......internet tough guy?

First of all I never threatened you. I did want to see if you had enough courage to say to someone’s face what you say behind the curtain of anonymity and you proved you did not have courage at all. My point was made.

You are intentionally evading my point and that compared to plagues from the past this one is extremely minor.

What we can learn from all of the plagues I mentioned is that these are part of the human condition and this one doesn’t seem to be killing children and the able bodied thank God.

Now answer my question, should I be banned from this site for distributing “dangerous misinformation”?

You claim to be a scientist so I’m sure you are aware that Stalin among others banned certain scientific notions he thought were dangerous. Should that be this site’s policy as well?

If you feel that my contributions are frivolous or even ridiculous then why respond to them? And why use terms like dickhead and the many other obscenities you throw about like confetti? It makes you look defensive and immature and have no place in a well constructed argument. And why are you so angry all the time?

HE BROKE IT DOWN FOR YOU PRETTY NICE. THERE WERE 4 PANDEMICS IN THE LAST 100 YEARS. I CAN SEE THE POSSIBILITY OF ONE MILLION PEOPLE DYING FROM THIS BY THE TIME ITS ALL SAID AND DONE WHICH WOULD MATCH THAT OF KONG KONG FLU AND ASIAN FLU. HOWEVER, I CAN GUARANTEE THOSE PEOPLE DID NOT QUARANTINE, AND IF WE ARE LOOKING AT SIMILAR NUMBERS WITH BASICALLY DOUBLE THE POPULATION YOU MIGHT WANNA ASK YOURSELF IF THIS QUARANTINE WAS WARRANTED AND IF IT SHOULD CONTINUE. ANYBODY WITH HALF A BRAIN SHOULD REALIZE THE ANSWER SHOULD BE A RESOUNDING HELL NAH.

You can tie it all up in the semantics of the word pandemic or whatever. But the bottom line is that when people are dying and watching their children and loved ones die in massive numbers they’re not saying in their death rattle, well at least this is not a pandemic!

People are not dying in massive numbers here. So far just over 300,000 in a world of close to 8 billion. 100 million died in the 1918 pandemic in a world of 1.8 billion. Everyone knew someone who had died. Do you even know anyone who has tested positive in your world. Do you know anyone who has died?

About 5 million have died of starvation just this year. About that many more from communicable diseases other than c-19. Why is this disease so much worse to you? Where is your outrage over those? As an outsider it seems that you are very emotional about this.

    Why?

    List of
    World Wide Pandemics;
    Note:
while these are listed as world wide , very few had the total spread that covid 19 dose , to literally every country , and virtually every principality , protectorate , territory and independant identity in the world.

(if anyone knows of any international identity it has not reached , please comment)

prior to the advent of the fast clippers in the 1840s , it would have been almost impossible to spread anything world wide , except over a very long timespan ,
due to the fact that travel took so long ,
everybody either died aboard , or recovered , with immunity

obviously not all of these reached everywhere covid has today , so while they are pandemics , and they did reach all around the world , by comparison they are not totally "world wide"

How many do you know infected your country and countries you know about
    ?

Note that most of these are over years ,
    some , ongoing
over decades. (like the plague , over 105 years , did it reach where you live ? )

    1846 -48 influenza

    1847 -48 yellow fever

    1855 - 1960 bubonic plague

    1889 -90 influenza

    1915 - 1926 Encephalitis lethargica

    1918 -20 influenza

    1957 -58 influenza

    1961 -75 cholera

    1968 -70 influenza

    1981 - 2018 HIV AIDS

Did your country experience an epidemic of any of these ?

    2002 -04 SARS

    2000s mumps outbreaks

    2010 swine flu

    2012–present MERS Corona virus

    (Ebola & Zika ? ) ? ?

    Covid 19
might have been around for about 5 or 6 months ,
but only an epidemic , then pandemic for 4 months So Far.

    **
The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 213 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances.
