The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is buying 80 million 4-inch black polyethylene balls to cover the surfaces of three Los Angeles reservoirs that serve 4 million residents. At a cost of 33 cents each, the hollow spheres are designed to block sunlight from turning bromide and chlorine in the water into bromate, a suspected carcinogen.

Im surprised to see the balls are made in America. You can bet there will be plenty of kickbacks from this, 80 million of them at 3 for $1 is a chunk of change...

 

I was thinking maybe invest in underground tanks. China made a tank underground big as half a city for 5 billion that will hold an ungodly amount of water

Well yeah, you don't think the government really cares do you? This was probably a favor for a friend that owns a plastic ball company.

 

How are he fish going to eat the bugs? So, does that mean more bugs or will all the fish die? Hmm, hope somebody thought this through. It's never simple fixing such matters.

 

I wonder if the balls will cut down the rate of evaporation too? Yes, people use too much water, but with the hot sun/ temperatures, there must be a lot of evaporation making an already low resevoir that much lower.

 

I'll bet that's what it is . I mean hey if it would work I'd say do it up but I'm just picturing a beautiful reservoir covered in balls for no good reason

 

I would be almost certain it would stop evaporation, but the plastic is black, which absorbs loads of heat. Will the balls put off anything being in the sun and will it heat the water enough to make bacteria grow like hell. I just hope they thought this through

I'm wondering why they used black balls instead of white ones.

Why do black objects absorb more heat (light) than lighter colored objects? What do wavelengths have to do with it?

Heat and light are both different types of energy. Light energy can be converted into heat energy. A black object absorbs all wavelengths of light and converts them into heat, so the object gets warm. A white object reflects all wavelengths of light, so the light is not converted into heat and the temperature of the object does not increase noticeably.

For starters, the shade provided by the balls is expected to prevent 300 million gallons of water from evaporating annually.

“By reducing evaporation, these shade balls will conserve 300 million gallons of water each year, instead of just evaporating into the sky. That’s 300 million gallons to fight this drought,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said, as quoted by KABC News.



I'm thinking the water will evaporate more quickly with the balls heating it up.

I'm sure they spent all kinds of money on studies, so let's hope their studies were thorough.

 

The balls will block the sunlight that under water grasses need to grow. The under water grasses provide nurseries for juvenile fish to grow. I really don't think this was well thought out at all.

 

I said it years ago, their screaming moonbat lunacy was from the water, if this actually works, you'll see the positive results of it in the next 3 generations or so.
