      Speaking as a mother in the US, I can tell you that when I was preparing to give birth, the hospital would have the mother sign a consent to either have it done or to not have it done prior to the birth in case your baby was a boy. If you chose yes, it would be done soon after the birth. I think it was the traditional thing here for so many years because of people being uninformed about the medical pros and cons. I remember they used to think it lowered the risk of penile cancer, but of course they now know that is not true. I do remember feeling pressured by the doctors to sign for it, and was very torn about wanting to do the right thing for my child, but not having enough information on who was right. I understand that we are moving away from the practice these days, and most of the young parents I know are not having it done.
