'Unwelcome development' hits Jim Jordan as speaker vote looms

Rep. Jim Jordan's apparently vanishing hope of replacing Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as the speaker of the House looks like it took another hit Monday as rebelling GOP House members hinted they have another candidate they will put forward when a vote is called on Tuesday.

On Sunday, CNN reported that 20 or more members of the House GOP caucus were plotting to derail Jordan's plan to become the GOP's face of the House.

Now Politico is reporting he is facing another speedbump on the road to the speakership as moderates coalesce around another challenger.

According to the report from Politico's Olivia Beavers, this is an "unwelcome development" for the Ohio Republican whose allies were reportedly threatening retribution against Jordan's detractors over the weekend.

Beavers wrote the news of another challenge, "will further complicate his rocky bid to get to 217 votes on the House floor. Few House Republicans had predicted he would face a competitor after he won the conference’s nomination on Friday."

She added, "Jordan allies, meanwhile, want to charge into a floor vote with the hope that the public pressure from the conservative base, radio talk show hosts, and their own GOP colleagues, among others, will change the holdouts’ minds. Not to mention the threat of a primary challenge."

'No backup plan': GOP in meltdown over Jim Jordan as Dems plan to take advantage

    Matthew Chapman

Republicans are in disarray after the failed speakership vote for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) — and Democrats are plotting their next move in response, said NBC News Capitol Hill reporter Sahil Kapur on MSNBC's "The ReidOut" Tuesday.

"What is the status of the attempts to corral votes for Jim Jordan?" asked anchor Joy Reid. "Let's start there."

"It's a bit of a mess right now, Joy," said Kapur. "Jim Jordan's team did not expect there to be 20 defections. They certainly did not expect to be dealing with 20 defections from such a cross-section of their Republican conference. You have appropriators in there, swing district members, conservatives who are generally known as team players with the Republican Party who oppose him. So Jordan had some meetings with leadership allies. He said he's going to continue working members, talking to them. They are expected to have another vote tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. on a second ballot. And that's going to be a crucial inflection point. He's going to have to show he can make progress here, that he can improve his vote count rather than potentially lose more votes, which is also a possibility that some members think is in the cards or his speakership bid could collapse quickly. It's not over yet. There is no backup plan if Jim Jordan doesn't get it, and the House Republicans are in a very perilous situation at this time."

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

"And your reporting, Sahil, is Democrats are actually setting up and poised to take full advantage if somehow Jim Jordan gets the votes," said Reid. "Tell us about that."

"Yeah, they absolutely are," confirmed Kapur. "Democrats are already crafting a message and a strategy to tie the entire Republican Party to Jim Jordan, to argue that there are no moderates left in the House Republican conference, that they're all beholden to an extremist, to radicals. They're going to tie Republicans to Jordan, to Trump. They're bringing up the January 6th insurrection. Which is not — Jordan was one of more than 140 Republicans who voted to block the certification of some of Joe Biden's electors, but it was more than that. He was involved in some of the conversations with former President Trump at the time. He kind of spoke out at rallies and took that message that the election was stolen out on the road, which of course, we know to be a lie. So Democrats do see a political opportunity there, if Jordan is speaker, to try to tie every Republican to his brand of politics."

"It's unclear at this moment whether he will get there," added Kapur. "And if he doesn't, then there are already conversations happening, including among Democrats, as to whether there should be some kind of caretaker speaker, someone like Patrick McHenry is a person who Democrats respect. The minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, said all options are on the table when it comes to temporarily or permanently finding a bipartisan path to a speaker. Unlikely at the moment, but that option could come into play as things get desperate. The government shuts down in one month from today if there's no action, and there's a groundswell of support for some action to help Israel as it deals with that horrific attack from Hamas."

The vote for Speaker is about to begin. Jordan and Hannity's bullying campaign seems to have backfired and Capitol Hill reporters are saying Jordan probably lost more votes. There is also some speculation Hakeem Jeffries and the Democrats might have something up their sleeves.

I have to wonder why they keep mentioning Jordan's college wrestling career when all that does is call more attention to Jordan covering up the sexual abuse of some of his wrestlers when he was a coach at Ohio State.

Totally amazing. The next thing the guy nominating Jordan did was praise him for his efforts and plans to cut Social Security and Medicare. I wonder what they are thinking.

Jordan actually lost more votes than yesterday with 22 now voting for someone else. The final vote was 212 for Hakeem Jeffries, 199 for Jordan, and 22 for other.

So now what? More spinning of treasonous conservative/American Hating/Republican spinning of wheels with the middle east on fire and Israel needing aid.

This governing shit is just so fucking hard let's take the rest of the day off again. So what if Congress is paralyzed while the middle east is on fire and Israel is running out of aid. We treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans can't be expected to do anything.Because Trump is our dictator and wants Jordan as speaker and we must obey him.

Hey now Jordan can claim another championship.

Two-time NCAA National Champion (1985 and 1986 in wrestling)

And now fewest votes for a Speaker nominee by a party in modern history.

At least this shows there is still some honor amongst the GOP. Jordan is an election denier and backed Trump's attempts to overturn a free and fair election. Yet here he is attempting to become speaker of the house for god sake!

If Jordan does become speaker it will just show just how far the GOP has truly fallen. Banana republic here we come.

Can you imagine how many threads we would have on the front page if it was the Democrats that have Congress paralyzed for more than two weeks in just normal times let alone with war between Israel and Hamas and the middle east on fire? I bet it would be about a half dozen.

And the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans have a bigger problem than they know. Jordan is a psych wrestler. Just as much as their physical abilities psych wrestlers depend on trying to psych their opponents out. And they do that by being loud, mean, super aggressive. They come at you mentally as much as physically trying to intimidate their opponents.

But it works both ways. They also psych themselves into believing they just cannot lose. So Jordan is not going to give up.

The counter to a psych wrestler is actually pretty easy though. The first thing you have to do is convince your wrestler not to be afraid of them. Trust your skills. Trust your training. And most of all trust your conditioning. That while they are
running their mouth, yelling and screaming, you have actually been doing the work. And then step on the mat and see how it goes. All you have to do is ignore the psych, stand up to them, and take them on.

And if you do then you find the reason they are a psych wrestler is because they are mentally brittle. And if they start losing they collapse. And then they are done from then on.

And that is all the treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans in the House have to do. Ignore the psych. Make a move on him. Take him down. And he will crater.

But will they find enough guts to do that? I have my doubts.

House in limbo as Jordan continues speaker bid despite stiff GOP resistance

The House remains paralyzed with no end in sight to the Republican leadership crisis as GOP Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio continues his bid for speaker despite facing stiff resistance.

The Ohio Republican, who has made a name for himself as a hardline conservative agitator, has so far vowed to stay in the race despite two failed votes for the gavel. The House could hold a third vote for speaker as soon as Thursday afternoon, though no vote has been officially scheduled yet.

Tensions are rising among House Republicans as pressure grows to find a way to resolve the standoff. In a sign of growing opposition to his candidacy, Jordan fared worse in a second round of voting on Wednesday than he had in the first vote a day earlier.

After Wednesday’s failed speaker vote, a number of Republicans who oppose Jordan made clear they won’t be swayed and some expressed outrage over what they described as a pressure campaign against them by Jordan allies.

The House remains effectively frozen as Republicans have failed to coalesce around a viable alternative to

after the former speaker was ousted in a historic vote by a group of conservative hardliners.

Now, more moderate and mainstream Republicans are the ones digging in, with some concerned over the prospect of a conservative firebrand like Jordan as speaker and others angry over the role hardliners played in pushing out McCarthy and then opposing House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s bid for speaker.

As it increasingly looks uncertain that any candidate can secure the 217 votes to win the gavel, some Republicans have been pushing to expand the powers of the interim speaker, GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina. But such a move would be controversial and has divided Republicans.

Some of Jordan’s opponents have predicted that the Ohio Republican will lose even more support in Thursday’s speaker vote.

During the first round of voting, 20 House Republicans voted against Jordan. In the second round, that number rose to 22. There were four new Republican votes against Jordan and two that flipped into his column.

Given the narrow House GOP majority, Jordan can only afford to lose a handful of votes and the high number of votes against him so far puts the gavel far out of reach for now.

Jordan is a polarizing figure in the speaker’s fight. He is a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, and helped found the hardline House Freedom Caucus. As the chairman of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, he has also been a key figure in House GOP-led investigations.

His struggle to win the gavel has highlighted the limits of Trump’s influence in the speaker’s race after the former president endorsed Jordan.

It took McCarthy 15 rounds of voting in January to secure the gavel.

Some Republicans, however, have argued that given the unprecedented situation the House is now in without a speaker the current race should not go on for that long.

A fast-approaching government shutdown deadline and conflict unfolding abroad has also fueled calls for Republicans to bring an end to the leadership vacuum as soon as possible.

We will soon see. It looks like Jordan threw in the towel. Latest reports are McHenry will be interim speaker. Which really changes nothing. The treasonous conservative/America Hating/Republicans will still have to govern. And we have seen no indication they can.

Rep. Jim Jordan's (R-OH) staff told Punchbowl early Thursday that he was pressing forward with another Speaker vote Thursday – but the site later reported that Jordan is out.

Jake Sherman said that Jordan isn't doing a third ballot and he will put his support behind Patrick McHenry as an interim speaker until January 2024. Thursday morning, he said, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Reps. Jordan, Tom Cole (R-OK) and Tom Emmer (R-MN) met briefly to discuss other options.

Over the past 48 hours, House Republican members revealed they were receiving threats for refusing to support Jordan.

Multiple officials are detailing death threats and other intimidation they've faced for opposing Jim Jordan's speakership bid.

There were also reports of pressure on members through their spouses, which angered other members.

Jordan has now gone through two bruising ballots for the speakership, with many Republicans voting against him.

Republican plan to empower temporary speaker is 'dead' after 'dismal' meeting: reports

A plan by House Republicans to empower Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) as temporary speaker of the House was declared "dead" on Thursday.

Republicans considered it during a contentious conference meeting that lasted hours.

"The vibes coming out of the House GOP conference meeting – entering its third hour – are dismal," The New Republic's Grace Segers reported. "Rep. Vern Buchanan just told reporters that, 'reading the room,' a resolution to empower McHenry is 'dead.'"

CBS correspondent Scott McFarlane confirmed the report.

"Multiple House Republicans are telling us the resolution to temporarily empower Speaker Pro-Tem Patrick McHenry 'is dead.' Won't come to the floor for a vote," the reporter revealed. "Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) will plow ahead and try to change the minds of the 22 (so far) defectors."

    "They're nowhere," he added.

Here we go again. Jordan was out, then back in, then delayed another vote so he could meet with the holdouts against him. And instead the holdouts turned the tables on him and everyone of them was telling Jordan why he needed to drop out.

And in the meantime Congress, or at east the House remains paralyzed with wars in Ukraine and Israel and the middle east on fire. The Senate is still moving forward but without the House their bills can't make it to President Biden's desk.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite deepening opposition, Rep. Jim Jordan is digging in for a fight to become House speaker ahead of a Friday vote, even as his Republican colleagues are warning the hard-edged ally of

that no more threats or promises can win their support.

The House is scheduled to convene for Jordan's third try at the gavel, but Republicans have no realistic or workable plan to unite the fractured GOP majority, elect a new speaker and return to the work of Congress that has been languishing since hard-liners ousted Kevin McCarthy at the start of the month.

“The American people are hungry for change,” Jordan said in a news conference at the Capitol.

Drawing on his Ohio roots, Jordan, who is popular with the GOP's right-flank activist base of voters, positioned his long-shot campaign alongside the history of American innovators including the Wright brothers, urging his colleagues to elect him to the speakership.

But after two failed votes, Jordan's third attempt at the gavel is not expected to end any better. In fact, Friday is likely to produce an even worse tally for the Judiciary Committee chairman — in large part because more centrist rank-and-file Republicans are revolting over the hardball tactics being used to win their votes. They have been bombarded with harassing phone calls and even reported death threats.

For more than two weeks the stalemate has shut down the U.S. House, leaving a seat of American democracy severely hobbled at a time of challenges at home and abroad. The House Republican majority appears to have no idea how to end the political turmoil and get back to work.

"He doesn’t have the votes to be speaker,” Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., said after a late Thursday meeting when Jordan sought to hear detractors out and shore up support.

The holdouts want “nothing” from Jordan, Gimenez said, adding that some of the lawmakers in the meeting simply called on Jordan to drop out of the race.

One extraordinary idea, to give the interim speaker pro tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry, more powers for the next several months to at least bring the House back into session and conduct crucial business, was swiftly rejected by Jordan's own ultra-conservative allies.

A “betrayal,” said Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind.

Next steps were highly uncertain as angry, frustrated Republicans predict the House could essentially stay closed for the foreseeable future — perhaps until the mid-November deadline for Congress to approve funding or risk a federal government shutdown.

“We’re trying to figure out if there’s a way we can get back with a Republican-only solution,” said veteran legislator Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla.

“That’s what normal majorities do. What this majority has done is prove it’s not a normal majority.”

What was clear was that Jordan was refusing to step aside, appearing determined to wait out his foes even as his path to become House speaker was all but collapsing.

“What we saw with Speaker McCarthy in the 15 rounds is that he went down first and then he came back,” said Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., referring to January's historic election. "That’s where we are with Jordan.”

But earlier, Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., said “it’s not going to happen.”

Many view the Ohio congressman as too extreme for a central seat of U.S. power, second in line to the presidency.

After a first failed vote Tuesday, Jordan lost rather than gained ground on a second ballot Wednesday, opposed by 22 Republicans, two more than the day before.

“One thing I cannot stomach or support is a bully,” said a statement from Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, who voted against Jordan on the second ballot and said she received “credible death threats."

With Republicans in majority control of the House, 221-212, it appears there is no Republican candidate who can win a clear majority, 217 votes, to become speaker.

A closed-door meeting Thursday to regroup grew heated at times with Republican factions blaming one another for sending their majority into chaos, lawmakers said.

When Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a chief architect of the ouster of the speaker two weeks ago, rose to speak, McCarthy told him it was not his turn.

“We’re shaking up Washington, D.C. We’re breaking the fever. And, you know what, it’s messy," Gaetz said later, saying he had no regrets over the past weeks of havoc.

Elevating McHenry to an expanded speaker's role coulld be a possible off-ramp for the crisis, but it would not be as politically simple as it might seem.

Republicans are loath to partner with the Democrats in a bipartisan way on the arrangement, and it's highly unlikely Republicans could agree to give McHenry more powers on their own, since their hard-liners don't like it.

McHenry himself has brushed off attempts to take the job more permanently after he was appointed to the role after the unprecedented ouster of McCarthy more than two weeks ago.

“I’m going to abide by the Constitution and the rules of the House, and no one is going to put me in a different position," McHenry said late Thursday, reiterating what he has told his colleagues.

"If there is some goal to subvert the House rules to give me powers without a formal vote, I will not accept it,” he said.

The North Carolina Republican, who is is well-liked by his colleagues and viewed as a highly competent legislator, has said his job is "to get the next speaker elected. That’s my focus.”

To win over his GOP colleagues, Jordan had relied on backing from Trump, the party’s front-runner in the 2024 election, and groups pressuring rank-and-file lawmakers for the vote. But they were not enough and in fact backfired on some.

Jordan has been a top Trump ally, particularly during the Jan. 6 Capitol attack by the former president’s backers who were trying to overturn the 2020 election he lost to Biden. Days later, Trump awarded Jordan a Medal of Freedom.

First elected in 2006, Jordan has few bills to his name from his time in office. He also faces questions about his past.

Some years ago, Jordan denied allegations from former wrestlers during his time as an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University who accused him of knowing about claims they were inappropriately groped by an Ohio State doctor. Jordan has said he was never aware of any abuse.

Kevin The Coward actually nominated Jordan this time hoping it would make a difference. To no avail Jordan has already lost the third round.

So we got curious, who are the despicables supporting as house speaker?

Keeping in mind that traditionally the party holding the majority gets the Speakers spot pretty much automatically, we see that the despicables have consistently cast their votes for Hakeem Jefries. Now, following the logic that the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different outcome, we have to ask what the despicables have been drinking since, you know, they don't control enough votes to put Jeffries into power. And if they did, the deplorables would put a hammer lock on the house that wouldn't end until the 2024 elections.

    We know this;
The 435 assholes in the house are not taking care of our business.
The 100 assholes in the senate are not taking care of our business.
The asshole in the white house doesn't know whose business he's taking care of.

We aren't going to survive much longer as a species, are we?
