I apologize for being cryptic in this post. I work in a field that requires a license and the government makes some personal information of license holders available to the public. At a recent course for continuing education requirements, the instructor told a story to highlight a point being made. Some details have been changed but not the gist of the story.

A married man started a business. His business grew and became successful. For some reason, he had an affair with his wife's sister. The divorce attorney told the husband to get a corporate attorney and a criminal attorney FAST, before the divorce petition wound its way through the court system and found its way to a prosecutor's office. The legal team went proactive, contacted the government agencies to which he had sent reports to notify them of errors, and contacted prosecutors to negotiate away any possible criminal indictments. The husband paid over $1 million in fines and penalties associated with restating years of financial statements and reports to various government agencies. That does not include the cost of paying the legal team to correct all the necessary reports for the years in question. Then, the wife revised her demands for alimony, child support, and division of marital assets to reflect the corrected and higher values of her husband's income and wealth. That cost him close to $2 million more.

The moral of the story? If you are going to stray, make sure she is worth it!
